It’s almost unheard of for an executive in pro sports to get this long of a run with so little success in the postseason, all while clinging to an unorthodox roster construction that has backfired again and again.

In Toronto, accountability has come for everyone but the person running the show and the core group of five players he has endorsed and defended for years.

Wow … pitchforks are out of shannascam-

Here's what the Hockey News says (and you should take their word over mine):

The Maple Leafs relieved Keefe of his duties before a two-year contract extension was set to begin. The Maple Leafs will continue to pay Keefe through those two years, making a job at the AHL level more appealing for him financially. He would still make an NHL paycheck while working at a lower level.

In other words.. Keefe to Wilksbury-Scranton

I actually like what Shanahan has done over the years.

He purposely tanked the team - something nobody in Toronto had the guts to do for 50 years.

He held onto draft picks, which turned into the most talent this team has seen in years.

And he acquired top end talent. I think that looking back, signing Tavares was a mistake, but there isn't a single guy here who hated it at the time of the signing.

Most importantly, he stopped MLSE from continuously sacrificing long-term progress with short-term, reactive moves - something this franking team has been doing for 60 years.

We didn't get the results we wanted.

But I still like the process we followed.

- Atomic Wedgie

Very rosy picture indeed with a lot of "nice things" in the frame. But its an incomplete picture leaving out all the juicy bits, and some of it is utter bs.

What Shanahan also did was have a "plan" that was named after him that had literally never be tried before in NHL history, and has proven to been a complete and total failure. The proof of failure of this concept is undeniable.

The truly remarkable thing about this plan is that it is almost entirely impossible to untie due to the no trade contracts he ok'd. The Shanaplan is the Gordian Knot of roster construction.

It's also not true that we have protected long-term progress - our farm system is largely bereft, and we have very little draft capital to add players, due to continually throwing draft picks out the door under Dubas. It's Treliving you can thank for putting an end to this practice this year, not Brendan Shanahan.

So, no, I do not agree at all that overall the "process" followed was good.

I also don't get the idea of being "ok" that this is a holding year. You're in the utter prime of the best player this franchise has ever had, yet due to this "plan" that you think is good, we need to be in a holding phase? How is that a good "process"?

It remains to be seen if Treliving and Shanahan will get Keefe’s replacement behind the bench right.

When Treliving took over the Calgary Flames in 2014, he held onto the incumbent Bob Hartley for two seasons. He replaced him with Glen Gulutzan, who was dropped after two seasons and replaced by Bill Peters, who lasted one and change. Then came Geoff Ward and Darryl Sutter.

It was an unsuccessful revolving door behind the bench.

Raise your hand if you think it’s gonna get it right in Toronto- 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Tree should make a list. Marner should make a list. They can compare lists.

It might be time to try something different. The excuses are the narrative.

They should bring in Babcock to do a deep dive into everybody’s cell phones. He’ll get to the bottom of it.

I wonder if things would have been different if the Leaf's didn't cave and get rid of Babcock. Maybe he is washed and he certainly did dumb things but maybe he knew he had to toughen them up.

The players have ruled the roost since he left with very little resistance it seems.

NMC's can't kick in until the season you turn 27. This is a list of the top-50 cap earners in hockey - noting that the listed was the age in October when the season started. Kaprizov, in this list, is 26 - but didn't turn 27 until the season was over; Same with Meier, Hintz and Chabot. To make it easier, I've bolded the players who legitimately don't have trade protection:

1. Connor McDavid NMC age26
2. Nathan MacKinnon NMC age27
3. Erik Karlsson NMC age33
4. Artemi Panarin NMC age31
5. Drew Doughty M-NTC age33
6. John Tavares NMC age32
7. David Pastrnak NMC age27
8. Mitchell Marner NMC age26
9. Jack Eichel NMC age26
10. Jamie Benn NMC age33
11. Jonathan Huberdeau NMC age30
12. Tyler Seguin NMC age31
13. Sergei Bobrovsky NMC age34
14. Aleksander Barkov NMC age27
15. Nikita Kucherov NMC age30
16. Mark Stone NMC age31
17. Johnny Gaudreau NMC age29
18. Seth Jones NMC age28
19. Brayden Point NMC age27
20. Andrei Vasilevskiy NMC age28
21. Steven Stamkos NMC age33
22. Jakub Voracek age33
23. Darnell Nurse NMC age28
24. Mikko Rantanen M-NTC age26

27. Roman Josi NMC age33
28. Dougie Hamilton NMC age30
29. Kirill Kaprizov age26
30. Alex Pietrangelo NMC age33
31. Victor Hedman M-NTC age32
32. Ryan Johansen age30
33. Dylan Larkin NTC age26
34. Timo Meier age26
35. Mika Zibanejad NMC age30
36. Evgeny Kuznetsov M-NTC age31
37. Filip Forsberg NMC age28
38. Bo Horvat NTC age28
39. Aaron Ekblad NMC age27
40. Roope Hintz age26
41. Logan Couture M-NTC age34
42. John Carlson M-NTC age33
43. Tomas Hertl NMC age29
44. Jacob Trouba NMC age29
45. Thomas Chabot age26

47. Kevin Fiala NMC age26
48. Sean Couturier NMC age30
49. Jared Spurgeon NMC age33
50. Dmitry Orlov age31

No one likes that they are in this position, but any team signing Matthews, Nylander, Marner, Rielly or Tavares are giving them an NMC.

I'm not against the change, or trying to get someone to waive and move - but your anger here is misplaced. This isn't what they've done wrong.

Now you don't owe me anything and I don't wanna make you work more.

But how many of these are full NMC?

Because there's a big difference between "I can say no to everyone" and "I get to pick 10 teams I really don't want to go to".

Our players got their FULL NTC with unprecendented $ and term coming out of entry level deals. The players asked for the world, and they got it. The Leafs ABSOLUTELY got the first contracts of the core four colossally wrong.

I love the attention. We're treated like gods basically. Like this morning, I tried to book a tee time online but the course was full. So I called the proshop, said it was Mitch and Auston, and now we're teeing off at 1pm. Golfing in May and June is the best.
