Why does everyone say Tavares is an impossible to move? Is there not a team (like Anaheim) that has the cap space and needs to add some veteran leadership to support their outstanding young prospects?

I wonder. Why is Tavares playing at the world championships? Is he trying to send a message? I think you would have multiple teams interested in Tavares if the Leafs retained 40 or 50%. It would free up more money in the quest for goaltending and defence. It would also make the idea of retaining Marner more popular.

Nobody knows so we're all basing our opinions on what we do know.

We know this is home and that he has a young wife and three young kids all deeply rooted to families here in the GTA. We know he has one year left on his deal with an ironclad NMC that cannot be bought out. We know he's about as respected as they come in the industry. We know he's at a stage of his career that he wants to have a chance to win.

So for me that all equates to ...maybe Tree has a polite conversation with him about his willingness to play elsewhere. It wouldn't involve any shoving or use of leverage (like they might have with other players) ..just a polite conversation. I don't see him saying yes unless his wife and kids and extended family are keen to move to some sunnier low tax destination who also happens to have an interest in acquiring him and his $11M cap hit.

I don't see it ...

He's not winning here, though, is he.

Oh I can think of a few contenders for the crown.

There are at least as many suitors as there are legitimate cup contenders in the NHL!

Hockey is a business and if you look at the roster from a business perspective, two things jump out at you :

1) a huge proportion of your payroll is tied up in four dudes.

2) two of said dudes have expiring contracts.

If the GM determines that some of those four dudes have to go, the two on expiring contracts are prime candidates.

Whether you like JT or Marner (or not), they holding the short straws.

If you don't start hearing extension talks soon on these two, then you can bet this season will be the swan song for at least one of them in a Leafs jersey.

Somebody will be headed to the Super Soakers or resigning at a major hometeam discount.

Not this year, or next. But after that, if he signs a team friendly deal, anything is possible.

So he should agree to go to the ducks instead? You're not putting yourself inside the head of John Tavares. The fallacy is that their is some team that is able to take on his $11M and has a better chance of winning than Toronto?

And you heard him ....he believes this team can win. Maybe he's blowing smoke b/c he wants to stay. Maybe he really believes it. Either way, it's the same outcome in terms of where he plays next year.

Also - when do we start talking about Charlie Elick?

Obviously the Leafs pick at 23. He's the type of player that will force Skalapy to buy his jersey and put his poster up on his ceiling above his bed.

None of the Core 4 is getting moved during the offseason.

Book it.

We'll see. Of the two, I agree it's more likely JT returns.

If there is an extension, it's gotta be VERY team friendly. You can see JT slowing down. It could drop off a cliff.

So, both get asked to move, and refuse?

I'm sure the team will explore their options - they would be negligent not to.

My gut just tells me that the core stays for now and maybe somebody (one of the guys holding the shorter straws) gets moved at the next TDL if it becomes apparent that the player in question might leave for nothing if they aren't being resigned.

Oh ya - I'm not suggesting Tree extend him at all. Let the year play out and if he wants to stay it's at a number that Tree puts on the table (team friendly). I'm just saying that I don't see an option for a JT trade given the variables.

Karlsson was a difficult trade for SJ but he wanted out, they really really sucked, they could eat a bunch of his money, and they had one active buyer (Dubas) who had been chasing him for a while.

I'd say it's 99/1 that JT is here and it's 50/50 on MM.

You never see $11M contracts moved at the deadline.

I forgot about that thread. Looking back, I had him pegged for a 110p season. He got 107p, so that's pretty close. The rest of my predictions were scattershot.
