They weren’t the core leaders on the team in 08 and 09. Malkin still used a translator and Sid couldn’t legally drink in the US during the 08 run…they had a solid mix of vets and youth those years and it was a lot of overachievement and stars aligning. - abasin
hahahaha this is definitely a hilarious take lol |

Not only has Martin never been to the finals but McDavid had more assists this season than Martin has for his entire 955 game career. - Feds91Stammer
Damn Martins played 955 career games? That’s more impressive than a guy just born with talent. Gonna be cool he will reach 1000 games with 1 franchise. |

they wouldn't have won in 2009, 2016, or 2017 without great goaltending and depth scoring. None of those teams were "carried" by their leaders. It was a total team effort with scoring from all 4 lines. - j.boyd919
That's definitely true, but one thing Sid has had that other star players haven't in this era is the ability to adjust his game to whatever gives his team the best chance to win. He's elite at so many things, and each of their deep runs saw him focusing on different aspects of his game.
For example in 2016 with HBK and the depth scoring they didn't need Sid to put up huge offensive stats. Instead, Sid's line took on the role of smothering the other team's top line with a relentless puck possession game. He ended up with "only" 19 points in 24 games and a -2 that playoff run, but he was great at doing the job the team needed to win. That's leadership. |

He also scored 3 of the 4 game winners for the Pens in the ECF vs Tampa that year... which is the stuff of legends.
Balanced production throughout the lineup that year.. The highest producer was The Phil and he only had 3 more points than Sid. |

I actually think 2017 is the one year where you actually can claim they were carried by stars. The blue line was in disaster without Letang but all the big guns shot at like 30% at the same time. Those guys were on a mission and were not going to let the team lose. Obviously Murray and Fleury were also fantastic so that helped |

I think they still got some support scoring from guys like Rust, Cullen, Horny, Schultz had 13 points, Cole had 9, Hainsey went end to end and took a back door tap in from Geno. They definitely didn't have has many double digit point scorers but they had depth scoring come up big, but yeah I would agree the stars were better that year than 2016 which that team was a buzz saw.

I will always remember the Ron Hainsey shift. 1st pairing Hainsey was frustrating as hell to watch but somehow he managed to have one of if not the most epic moment of that Cup run.

Murray was elite and MAF was better than average. Average goaltending would have likely ended that teams run. |

Too much wussy poop to come from grinder. It also doesn’t have any mention of Matt Martin’s 80 point, 30 fight season when the Islanders won the Cup. |

Apparently the Jets have made it known that they are putting Ehlers on the market....28 years old...has scored 25, or more, goals in 5 of his 9 seasons...some of the non 25, or more, goal seasons he missed big chunks of time. 6 mill per for one more season, so next season is a contract year....
I think Dubas might kick the tires on that.... |
