Also if a team signs Marner 8 years, and they wait until after noon on July 1st to make the trade the team only has to pay 750K next year.
Actual money over 9 years will be low. - Santo_44
totally disagree.
the first years ok cause of his current contract but his new contract will be different than his current.
Who says it's 90% bonus $$$ going his way on his next contract |

He will be traded if the Leafs tell him they don't want him back after his deal is over.
He didn't do anything in his prime, he won't do anything going forward either.
He had his chance, it's over. - Rare_Jewel

there's all kind of wrong with this train of thought
The Leafs need to keep their 1st round pick
now you need to replace 3 players who will most likely not outperform JT.
and there goes your cap space you are trying to gain.
you suck it up an YOU KEEP JT. it's so plain and simple, no need to complicate things. - dmnted
Won't cost you a 1st round pick if you dump salary on a team that wants the cap hit for the floor. Chicago paid two 4th liners (Perry and Foligno) 8 million just reach the floor last season. Anaheim probably does the same this year.
Who do they have to replace? Tavares you can replace with a UFA 2nd line C who is actually paid as such. And Kampf? Janrkrok? Robertson? These guys are all replaceable for cheaper. |

They have to find 2 teams.
One where he wants to end up and another to eat 4 million after the Leafs retain 2.75.
Like I mapped out, a team like Chicago or Anaheim can take the cap hit and it would cost them nothing. They could get a player (Kampf or Jarnkrok) and a pick for their trouble.
If the Leafs can get a depth player and open up 5.5 AAV in cap space, that's enough to sign either a 2C like Stephensen or a RHD like Pesce or DeMelo. - Rare_Jewel
It looks like you do not like 1st round pick cause that's the seatner it will take to move JT |

Marner doesn't want to leave and doesn't want a trade. Tavares' contract is running out in 1 year and Marner has 6+ years of prime hockey left in him.
The Leafs do have a choice. Get rid of the guy who isn't worth the money anymore. And if he refuses, you resign Marner and use the Tavares cap space next season instead of this season.
This idea that "Marner must be removed" is ridiculous. - Rare_Jewel
Like you take on moving JT

And Tavares will want to if the Leafs say we don't want you back next year or after that.
If you push Marner and tell him he's not welcome back, he denies a trade, walks as a UFA and you lose an elite player in his prime for nothing.
If you push Tavares and tell him he's not welcome back, he either accepts a trade or he walks as UFA and you don't care because he's over the hill anyway.
The "get rid of Marner" scenario always makes the Leafs worse than the "get rid of Tavares" scenario.
If Marner walks to spite you, the team is (frank)ed. If Tavares refuses to waive and walks as a UFA, your team gets better 1 year later.

what other draft pick that will be sent as a sweetener?
They don't have many to begin with.
If I'm the other team eating 50% of his contract, I want a high draft pick. |

Leafs deploy workload management on Kessel. He’s on the roster every night but doesn’t show up until the 2nd intermission to get dressed, then give it all he has in the 3rd. He’ll play the opening shift of overtime, but that’s it. He will participate in shoot out. - Woderwick
I'm on board with this. Also, hotdogs in the training room.

Sweeteners are for teams that care about the top end of the cap. There are plenty of teams who don't need the cap space because they're reaching for the cap floor.
If you're a team like Anaheim, you don't require that big of a sweetener when the 1 year cap hit helps you hit the floor as you tank and rebuild. A player and a mid round pick should suffice. |

correct and the Leafs keep their assets.
Losing Marner will hurt the Leafs cause he a good regular season player but disappears when the going get tough and when they count him for offence which wilts with said pressure
