I would like to see Tanev or Pesce on the D. I'm not sure about Edmundson. He was decent in the playoffs, but I'm not sure he is playing more than 55 season games - but he is probably game for the playoffs. We need a healthier Edmundson who doesn't want $6m x 6.
The forward group really does need more grit in it and I'd like Domi back. I want more board battles won. You can support Nylander and Marner if you give them guys who routinely win battles (the Hyman effect).
And we need a good goalie to support Woll.

I honestly thing this is a great move for this team. Berube's system will make them tougher to play against. They have a opportunity to be a very scary team next year. |

No, you're usually to the Left, I am always to the Right. You love Socialism, I love Nationalism. But saying that, you have a right to your opinion and I'm left with my indignation of your thinking patterns. In the end, Left vs Right and if we can agree to disagree, things will be al right and we can all be left better educated for our trouble.

Fun useless facts :
The current active PM leaders in the NHL are Tom Wilson (1432) and Whorey Fairy (1426). For poops and giggles, Marchand sits at 8th with 1051.
As dirty as these bastards are, for all-time that is only 157th (Wilson), 161st (Fairy), and 356th (Marchand)
None of these guys will ever crack the top 50. Chara sits at 47th all-time with 2085, but it took him 1680 games to do it.
Also for poops and giggles - Berube is 7th all time with 3149. |

I'm really not sure about trading Marner though. I thought Domi was one of the best Leafs on the ice all series against Boston. Id like to see him and Bertuzzi back.
Marner is a fantastic player but if you can re-sign Domi and Bertuzzi and upgrade one of the D positions, it may be better to trade him. We've all thouhght for a while that 4 or 5 players taking up half the cap, or more, might not ne a recipe for success. - Aetherial
Leafs need to trade Marner and a top 4 defenseman, preferably a right shot defender needs to come back. I'm also thinking that it might be time for Morgan Rielly to move on, as well. I can live with a left handed defense contingent of McCabe, Edmunston and Benoit. If Edmunston doesn't want to sign a team friendly contract, go after Nikita Zedorov and plug him in at LD2. Do a complete overhaul of the right side of the defense.

We should come up with an interesting bet about this..
If Marner leaves or stays etc..
It’s awesome how many of you’s are wrong about his standing with the organization. I should capitalize on this somehow. - Arctic_AARDVARK
If he waives, he goes. I'm hoping that it's for a top 4 RD and picks. Some want goaltending coming back, but there just aren't enough top end goaltenders available that are under 30 years of age.

Not sure why so many people want to move on from Rielly. For all his warts, he is the Leafs best d-man. Sure, that's not a high bar, but it's still a fact. If you move Rielly, you have to replace him and the defense already needs help before you remove him. The Leafs defense issues get worse without Rielly. Landing one top-4 dman is hard enough, then you'd need two.
Maybe it's because it happened against my team, but I gained a lot of respect for Rielly last playoffs. Dude is warrior who bleeds blue and white. You can fault his mid skills or d-zone brainfarts, but his heart is there and his compete is there. The guy just shouldn't be getting these kinds of matchups and minutes on a better constructed/coached team.

I would have liked to see them move both, but you know this isn't happening. I give Willy the edge because he shows up for the playoffs and is currently signed to a new deal. He's definitely overpaid and Marner will want the same contract. Can't do that. The Leafs are top heavy on the offensive side and the defense is starved for talent because of it. I would like to see Marner and Rielly move on, because they can't be trusted in the playoffs. I don't care what they do in the regular season anymore. Just win in the playoffs and screw the fashion model, pretty boy persona that permeates the top players on the Leafs.

It's easier for the Leafs to replace Rielly because they already have 3 decent left shot defensemen. McCabe was forced to play on the right, but he's better playing the left side. It's the right side of the defense that needs a total rebuild. Moving Rielly out frees up the money to go after 3 right shot defensemen. Boosh and timid Timothy are a waste of space on the right side. I could swallow having Boosh back at 3-RD, but would rather see someone better at that position. Liljegren is just a creampuff that can't stay healthy back there. The best they could get for him is a 2nd rounder or part of a bigger deal with many parts moving around. Maybe they could dangle him in front of Washington and he could play beside his buddy Sandin and former coach Carbery. Timmy has to go!

The cap is going to force Tree's hand. Even if the cap goes up more than projected, the Leafs still can't keep throwing $10m+ at multiple players. The math just doesn't work. You need some degree of sacrifice to keep the band together in the cap world. Stamkos and Hedman took team-friendly deals to help balance out the cap in Tampa. Both of them left money on the table, taxes or not. Marner and Willy wouldn't and won't do that. It's their right not to, it doesn't mean they are terrible people. It just means they put themselves before the good of the team. Usually management and ownership acts as a check on this dynamic, but they allowed it to happen. I blame the top brass more than Marner or Willy.
Rielly showed up last playoffs and was one of the Leafs' best players. He didn't do it this year, but if you look at what sunk the Leafs this postseason, I don't put Rielly very high on that list. I put injuries, coaching, and goaltending on that list above Rielly.

Everything behind Rielly is a hot mess. I'd keep McCabe, but the rest are replacement-level plugs and pylons. I get what you are saying about Rielly and the money, but with the current market I just don't think it would be wise to move him unless you have somebody equal/better ready to step in. Once you pay that replacement, it doesn't leave much money for anything else. He's overpaid, but not to the extreme that Marner, JT, and Willy are.

Only problem with Riley was him being used in ALL situations, when he's clearly not that good in some. I saw the same decline as everyone this last playoffs, but I'd like to see how he is in a slightly lesser roll under Berube.
As long as someone better can push him down the line up, he's still decent value. Which I guess brings us back to the Marner part of your suggestion...
