Matthews ranked second among all NHL forwards in takeaways (85), tied for second in blocked shots (93), was fifth in even-strength total ice time (1,364:28) and seventh in plus-minus (+31).
Barkov helped the Atlantic Division champion Panthers finish the season tied for best goals-against-average in the NHL (2.41, excluding two GA for shootout losses).
Staal led all Hurricanes forwards in short-handed ice time (168:58) for the NHL's top penalty-killing unit (86.4%). He took a team-leading 1,375 faceoffs and won 58.1 per cent of them, the sixth-best percentage in the league (min. 50 GP/500 faceoffs), taking 89 per cent more faceoffs in the defensive zone (581) than the offensive zone (308).
All 3 good seasons but those AM34 stats are what defensive hockey is all about. Add in scoring 69 bloody goals and the fact he just wins board battles and almost always has his guy and is on right side of puck in Dzone. Face offs are great too (Staal) and playing on a good team while being super defensively responsible is also great (Barkov).
Those stats (defensive plus offence) is the epitome of impact both sides of the puck. |

The only thing that should matter to Leafs fans is doing whatever it takes to win a cup.

Agreed and that is why he will be the highest paid player in the league next year. A first overall pick that has exceeded expectations, which is not easy to do. |

Too many times I heard Keefe talk about who got the goals and points and top six and bottom six etc.
I think Berube will care about one team stat only. Wins. |

Berube hopefully brings in some decent assistant coaches. I would also hire Gary Roberts as an assistant, with his no nonsense approach and also teach the players how to get better nutrition programs to make them perform at a higher level. Still, they have to deal with the cap issues and move on from Marner, Liljegren, Robertson and Rielly. A complete rebuild of the right side of the defense should be job 1. |

I found the way Keefe let them galavant around chasing individual stats at the end of the season to be appalling.
Awful look for Keefe. Based on that alone I’m surprised any team would want to hire him. |

I just hope he brings in some systems that the Leafs can execute.. Get them to exit the zone clean instead of whatever the hell they were doing last year |

Zach Hyman has a very club friendly deal with the Oilers at $5.5m.
Most Leaf fans, including bean counting management types, would concede it was a mistake to let him slip away.
Marner and Hyman are very different players.
But, mark my word, letting Marner slip away may cause even greater fan sorrow than watching Hyman perform in the playoffs. |

He did sit Marner on 99 points the year before, how do you account for that? |

Chychrun, yes.
Obviously, no one will even speak His name as a possible trade candidate.
But, there is no doubt in my mind if He played with Matthews it could be the most fearsome duo in the league. I think Canada may be destined to discover this in the next NHL international challenge when Canada and US face off.

Damn during the OHL final the announcers were saying he modeled his game or looked up to Kadri. Just read how him and Mitch are test buddies. Too bad. I was hoping Leafs would give him a good shot, but looks like he could be in a package deal with Marner.

I would certainly do Chychrun and Joseph for Marner.
I think Ridley Grieg and Chychrun for Marner is far too rich in irony for the Leaf media.
Love to see Marner with the Sens. But, I don't think he can fit based on the Sens sticking with an $8.5m max cap hit for their top players.
Biggest problem in moving Marner is the impact of his future ask. It may be far too heavy for the internal cap structure adopted by most other teams.
Really good young talented teams like Anahiem (Ottawa is the second youngest NHL team) are deep in very good young players and could do a deal. But, do they really want to risk a bench mark $12m cap hit on the top of their books?

unless the Sens add Boston's 1st rnd pick 2024 and Ottawa 2nd rnd pick in 2025.
then it's looking like a deal could happen.
again the second proposal isn't good enough, it's not rich, it's poor.

Joseph is a fast skater with stone hands. Including him doesn't move the needle. He's a replacement-level player.

Seriously. Sens successfully dealt DeBrincat in the Division to the Wings and avoided the curse of signing an undersized player who fades as the season gets tougher. This is the curse of most undersized player. It gets a lot harder after Christmas. In the playoffs they can fade completely.
