pure gold. lets give trash for a top 5 pick.

none of those players or a combo of those players with #12 gets you to 5.

- hello it's me 2050

I would think Farabee would be the guy MTL wants in any package. He fits their timeline.

Agreed. York, TK and maybe Sanheim are the only roster players that get you close to going from 12 to 6-8.

With Slaf, Caufield and Roy a top-six wing is probably not high priority enough for them to be trading out of a top-5 pick... which they could just use to pick a player that will potentially be (much) better than Farabee.

Tortorella's a systems coach, and a task master. The Flyers don't have a lot of talent so they rely on responsible systems play, the problem with that is, without talent he overplays the guys who can pull off what he's teaching and they become exhausted by mid January. That and he personally becomes too much, so the guys tune him out.

Most coaches have a shelf life of about 2-4 years the best ones 4-6 years. It seemed like Jim Montgomery was thought of highly by some on this site and he also has not succeeded with way more talent than the Flyers have.
My point is I think Torts has done a good job, not great, the last 2 years. The style of play had to change and he accomplished that and this past season they were one of the better team scoring off of the rush. He is allowing the players to to play aggressively but still be responsible defensively.

We shall see if he keeps the team progressing next year but so far so good in my opinion.

How are you measuring Montgomery’s success or lack their of?

Making the playoffs is having success, but being successful is winning the cup. That is how i see it.

As far as I have seen, Montgomery and Brindy are great regular season coaches but ultimley fail in the playoffs.

Some blame the players for the playoff failure, the same players who helped get the team to playoffs.

It has to be a mixture of both coaches and players. But more people blame the players.

The playoffs are a different game than the regular season. Much tougher to win. That said, I do not think it is wrong to question coaches that have talented teams and don't "win". Just not sure what is a true barometer of success outside of winning the cup. Only one team wins every year.

A few days ago I saw a MTL publication proposing:

Habs get:

Joel Farabee
Philadelphia 2025 4th round pick

Flyers get:

Montreal 2025 1st round pick
Joshua Roy
David Savard

I would love to know why there are rumours of the Flyers wanting to acquire Martin Necas.

that is a pretty black and white way to determine a good or successful coach. a lot of coaches that have great records but never won the cup throughout the NHLs history.

Do you think he can successfully transition back to center?

I remember that series so vividly and that game is also one of my favourites. Loved that team and loved Lindros at his peak. Really thought they’d get it done. I still laugh when watching the games from that era. There was always someone basically water skiing off lindros and he just battled through it. Insane
- Hextall271

Just imagine what he could’ve done if they had cracked down on obstruction back then. He’d be even more dominant in today’s open game.

And you have a guy like Babs who was an absolute bottom shelf human being who still managed to win one behind a tremendously talented team.

A number of Wings players have since criticized his coaching and blame his constant BS and drama for them not winning more during that era.

IMO winning the Cup shouldn't be the primary measuring stick for a coach.

Considering he hasn't played the position since he was a teenager probably not.

He didn't even play C when he was drafted. He did at the World Juniors, but not for his euro pro club.

He will fit perfectly in the middle w the Flyers. Just b/c I could totally see the Flyers forcing him into the pivot position.

I think some teams see him being able to play center. A Wild blogger proposed a trade for Rossi assuming that Necas would be playing center.

Who are you picking at 5?

I’d rather get a late first and a good prospect for TK. Especially in a draft where there is little consensus past the first pick and then again after 4. So please convince me 2 1sts this year and a solid prospect is worth whoever you want.

- coffee junkie

There’s basically a consensus 8 after Celebrini. There’s some outliers but that’s always the case. The draft is muddied after those guys. You may get the same quality player at 12 that you do at 20 or later.

The 8 after Celebrini are (no particular order):
F-Demidov
F-Lindstrom
F-Catton
D-Levshunov
D-Buium
D-D*ckinson
D-Parekh
D-Silayev

The 5 defenseman are considered to have #1D potential. That’s where the strength of this class is considered.

The 2025 Draft is said to be deeper overall and is why the Flyers got Colorado’s 2025 1st instead of 2024. Additionally, next years draft is deeper at C especially at the top but thinner on top defensemen.

My question to you is, what prospect are you acquiring for TK?

He's listed as a C everywhere. Guessing most of those fans/bloggers probably didn't realize he wasn't.

I saw that as well. I would do that deal. It was good to see a perspective from another fanbase. While we sometimes overvalue what we have, we can also undervalue what we have.

The issues with Boston in 22/23 was injuries in the playoffs. This past season, Montgomery had the team in contention for the Presidents trophy despite losing his top two centers and not having a 1C. You aren't likely to win in the playoffs without a 1C

The Flyers were 25th in the league in goals scored at 5 on 5. 27th in the league in goals scored at 4 on 4 with a whopping 2. Dead last in the league in goals scored 5 on 4 and 27th in the league in goals scored 5 on 3 with a whopping 1. They were by far the best team in league scoring shorthanded which inflated their scoring rate. In normal offensive situations, the Flyers were not a good team offensively and Tortorella's system and style of play stifles offense.

MTL folks seem to recognize that you have to give up value to get some back.
