Well, I like that he is talking to the other GMs without feeling 'new kid" issues.
His second with LOu after Lou was instrumental is trading for Romanov so the Hawks could trade Dach for that Islander #13 first rounder (L'il Frankie Nazar). - wiz1901
Thinking that soon we'll no longer be using the L'il

There is no way they have any clue what is on the draft board's of the teams with pick's 3 through 20.
You can be sure that a few of the player's that the Hawks have on their draft board in the 3 to 18 slots slide to #20 or later.
I don't like the deal unless it is part of another deal. It has all the earmarks of a Stan type deal trying to prove he is smarter than the 31 other GM's. - Ztra
Probably best to wait until after the draft to gauge the deal?...... It could be KD moved up just cuz he could but also probable they have a target(s) they didn't feel would last until 20 and or wanted to better the odds of a target(s) be available.
Or as you say, the move to #18 could be the precursor to another deal. If nothing else it gives the organIzation more flexibility with the 18. And KD deals from strength as he has an abundance of draft picks so in that context the cost was minimal.
And, no doubt clubs game out how the draft will go and are very educated guesses. Teams and GM's have tendencies, a player profile they covet, needs and along with the kind of draft it is I bet clubs are pretty damn close on their internal mocks inside the top 2-3-4 tiers of a draft. |

and 4 spots in the 2nd, maybe their next tier drops off after 50 players? - vabeachbear
Well, I am always over hypled and pumped at the second rounders, but it bugged me how that Philly trade and vancouver subsequent climb to challenger ened up the late two twos were further back than I liked.
Looking at my current list.
As I gaze past my top 50 I see plenty of REALLY solid junior prospects at all three positions.
So let's say my list doesn't hold up, surely the guys below are excellent options to select at #50.
The Blakhawks haven't selected around #50 much.
Saad was taken #43.
Bryan Bickell # 41.
Corey Crawford# 52
Brandon Pirri # 59
Stephen Johns # 60
Justin Holl # 52
Carl Dahlstrom # 51
Graham Knott # 54 (big flop and FLDA Stenlund was on the board)
Artur Kayumov #50 (I don't think they go Russia in the 2nd round again)
Chad Krys # 45
Ian Mitchell # 57 (Draft in Chicago that built the current Dallas Stars)
Alex Vlasic. # 43
Colton Dach # 62
Ryan Greene # 57
Gavin Hayes # 66
Martin Misiak # 55
Nick Lardis # 67 |

That was Darth’s thought. Or maybe getting two positions higher gives him an opportunity to get who dropped in the rankings, like Moore last draft. - paulr
Right, there is a lot of potential upside to moving to 18 at very little cost due to the abundance of picks in KD's pocket. ............ Many post they wanna see KD use draft picks as assets and this is a move that does so.

Two thoughts
1 They got Moore without moving up.
2 They tried to move up on draft day.
So you would think this would motivate them to wait until they see how the draft is playing out vis-a-vis their draft board. - Ztra
Z, what's the downside to moving up in both the 1st and 2nd rounds? I can't find any, can you? Conversely what was the cost? If it were a team like TOR that only had 3-4 picks in the draft the cost would be high but for the Hawks, flush with picks for yrs out, the cost is minimal.
If nothing else it gives KD more flexibility and 2 and 4 spots closer to targets.

Yeah I think thats kind of the risk. Not sure that Carolina thought they would end up being so bad that they would end up with 1st OA.
Def looks a little different if it's like 4 and 9 and probably keeping Fields. Stuff just works out weird sometimes. |

Let's not put our noses up to considering Sacha Boisvert from the USHL as a future Hawk centre.
His father owns a gym.
He defended teammates by fighting.
Has competitively kick boxed; just not sue how quick he gets his skates off in a scrum. |

It probably will be 4 years before we know how the 18 and 50 versus 20, 54 and 61 picks turn out. Two years in the Juniors, college or Europe, than a year in the AHL and then MAYBE these guys hit the NHL.

Wiz, any thoughts on Hage? Nice write up in the Athletic about him. Canadian kid who chose the USHL/college route. He's made it through some adversity in his young career. Blow out his shoulder his first USHL season then his father dies in a swimming pool accident soon after. Committed to Michigan. He's who I would like to see at 18 or wherever the Hawks land.

The Caleb pick alone had it been traded again would have brought more than the previous 1953.

#98 had the primary assist on the Powerplay for Canada to tie the game late and then he was the first shooter in the shootout and scored the only goal for them in the shootout loss. |

Kinda seems like this draft has a lot of players with decent floors but really high upside that are worth taking a swing on. |

I think I stick to my list.
I thought Hage goes earlier, or I will sya 20% chance he does.
With him (and being injured) you look at how he was their best player and made people better. This is the attribute I build on.
There are so MANY really promising defenders guy in second round and even the 3rd.
I have extensively lectured positively toward the way the ST Louis franchise waited and scooped two big defenseman both when drafted still in development who helps fill out their team in both.
THIS is what I want the 3rd rounders (or even the 2nd rounders) to be targets for.
Forget surplus....
what happens if you pluck players like two way Spencer Gill, solid Harrison Brunicke, Adam Kleber, Colton Roberts or up and comer LD Jiri Fischer's kid Lucas....build build on the frame taht is there...the success radiated by the current Hawk defenders will only up thier value and if a revolving door begins, so be it.
back to your question oin #18...I justvthink there will be a surprise drop.
If not Jett Luchanko plays almost a guarantee.
I do not know how many teams took Trevor Connelly off their lists, but the kid can fly and score.
Sacha Boisvert, sure.
Helenius sure.
Liam Greentree and his feet sure his skating will improve and he has jam.
Beckett Sennecke why not?
Adam Jiricek?
"menber what I said , when he gets selected the high end tier ends... |

IF the Hawks draft at #18 Boisvert would be a very good option.
I think KD will trade that pick for immediate help (ie Necas). |

The rumour in Toronto is Domi is looking for a 5-6 year deal at $6M per. I’m sure if he gets it Bertuzzi will want something similar. Deeper in cap hell with Marner needing to be signed and still no defensemen or a goalie who can stay healthy. |
