I hope not unless its for a kings ransom of picks and prospects. MM on a contract year could be incredible. If we walks so be it. Frees up lots of room and you sign two players, ie. same as a trade |

You do everything you can to either sign him or trade him.
Letting him walk if you don’t have to, would be idiotic. |

Marner having a massive regular season, doing nothing in the playoffs and walking away with zero return does absolutely nothing for the team. |

I 100% agree. I’d be sad to see him traded unless it was a deal that gave me a blue boner. I think his injury affected his play a significant amount during the playoffs.
Not very many players as creative and talented as he is. If he signed for close to Nylander money I’d be very happy, then let Captain JT’s new contract open up the cap space.
In short…

Why picks and prospects? They don't really help the current window unless you move them out too or the prospects are ready to make the jump/impact. Which is a bit of a gamble with prospects.
I'm all for thinking ahead but at the same time, we have Matthews NOW. If we want to re-tool and restart, might as well move him too.

Picks and prospects cause they have 1 prospect. The 11M in cap space provides the players to help now. Win win |

The problem is he's overpaid now for a talented scoring winger that happens to be a really soft player. He will be on an even worse deal when Ferris and his dad negotiate a deal that pays him more than Matthews. Sign a one year team friendly deal and grow a pair of balls and he can stay.

Helps the players now how? If you have prospects you'd need to play them, taking up said cap space.
Not against it but what are you filling in the hole with 11 million in cap space? Don't say "top 4 d". Which one in free agency? Simply being vague in "it'll help them win NOW because they will get a top 4 d and another winger". Which ones?
They have 4 prospects getting close to make the jump and four just made the jump this past year to full time. Holmberg, Robertson, McMann and Knies. The leafs pipeline is relatively steady at this time.

A)We need 'em
B)They're worth...stuff
C)They cost nothing toward the cap
Marner is a hard sell to most teams, but the holy grail to a few. With the right picks/prospects/ useful Plugs coming back, you can make more specific targeted trades for what you need. The S11M gives you the flexibility to do whatever the (frank) you want, in what might be a buyers market for free agent D-men.
If we go into next season with Riley as our 3rd best defence-man, and with a bunch of nearly ready prospects chomping at the bit, I doubt Marner will be missed as much as some think.
People are too worried about losing the trade and maybe getting chirped by other fan bases, rather than looking at the potential team after the dust settles.
You can lose the trade, and still have a better chance at winning the cup.

You can trade picks for sure, and some prospects. Would be good to actually have some assets to acquire the type of players in trade we need to balance this roster. |

No need for your over the top criticism of trade proposals. If Marner were on a different team he would be on a contract that paid much less than $10M heading into another contract that paid less than $10M per season. His cap hit is bigger than any of Kucherov, Draisaitl, Makar, Kaprisov, Barkov, Tkachuk and Rantanen to name a few. Think about his next contract for a minute. If he gets a raise which is likely, that bad deal becomes even worse long term. - winsix
Its not overtop.
But i agree, i dont want to pay him 12m or more.
Willie's bad deal begins next year as well.
11.5m per or you let the marner walk..or sign and trade at draft.
Right now, he has a full year left, not giving him away. |

I thought so too at first, but when you add in the 6M in cap space, it looks nicer.
It could be a Pesce! or a boat! - oldstyle
I agree, the extra cap space would be nice.
But ya still gotta get a great hull for marner |
