There's some speculation the Hurricanes might buy-out Kotkaniemi. His buy-out is remarkably cheap for them, only costs them 800K per season in AAV. But he's still only 23/24 years old so obviously there's still some untapped potential left in him.

If he in fact does become a UFA, he would be an intriguing option for the Leafs to bring in as a LW/2C. If his price is low enough on a 1 year "show me" deal, he could be a short term steal. He's got a pretty big frame even though he doesn't hit.

He has nearly 400 games of NHL experience and almost 70 playoff games under his belt. There were a lot of people ready to give up on Lafreniere and he really popped off this year. Might have a similar "buy low" situation with Kotkaniemi if Carolina actually pulls the trigger on buying him out.

At his worst, he's a 10-15 goal, 30-40 point player which is no better or worse than having Jarnkrok for the same price. At his best, you might get 20+ goals and 50+ points if he gels with Nylander with the way Kotkaniemi skates and passes.
