M'eh never played a game as a Leaf so he's not a guy I look at and think "Why the (frank) didn't you do that when you played for us you clown". lol
I also think he's been good but he hasn't been instrumental or lead his team to playoff glory since the Leafs traded him. - Cush29
Late bloomer.
Hard to fault the Leafs.
I mean, I still do, but I'm just saying it's hard to fault the Leafs, so I deserve extra credit. |

Oh oh oh, or JT leaving after next season and signing in Buffalo or Ottawa for 3mil or something and then that team beating the Leafs in the first round!
It writes itself! C'mon Hollywood! - AdamFrench
And then coming back and holding a rally at Nathan Phillips Square!
There's a lot to hate Ray Bourque for (his hair, opting out of the Canada Cup to go camping), but this had to have been the douchiest thing ever.
Yet the Mas sholes loved it.
Go figure.

I was pissed the day they traded him. I even commented on here at the time that of the handful of contracts dumped that day, he had the best chance of turning into something. Now it did take 3+ teams and more time then any team would have given him...but I did end up being correct (eventually).

So essentially...dont trade marner and dont resign bert and domi as they combined for 30 goals. So they werent worth the $8m. Agreed. - Fakepartofme
Except your summary of the article is inaccurate.
For instance this is another quote from the article:
In the meantime, I certainly wouldn’t punt Marner away from the team for pennies on the dollar unless there is some sort of off-ice issue we are not privy to or if, without a contract extension, the situation becomes untenable, and the player demands out. I absolutely would trade Marner if the Leafs can retrieve the proper value in return, adequately filling the needs discussed (namely, center and/or defense).
It's a fence straddling article in many ways, stating the obvious (Don't trade unless you get equal value back - gee thanks Tips).
In another part of the article it talks about re-signing Domi at the appropriate value etc.
So stating the obvious and saying don't do this 'unless it makes sense' or 'you get the same value back' etc. Honestly more than half that article could have been written without players names - Don't trade star player unless you get equal value back blah blah blah.

Rep kid refuses to steal 3x, 1st base coach pissed
Rep player drills my son in pitching arm while batting
Bases loaded 1 out, batter strikes out, kid on 3rd starts walking off the field
Tagged out for 3rd out
Game ends in tie
Do it all over again tonight 🤨

Panthers have cornered the market on those kind of "buy low" additions. Forsling, Verhaege, Montour, Bennett, ...even Reinhart was bought low.
Although I wonder if the real difference maker (that made them all improve to what they are now) is Tkachuk. An elite superstar who brings the leadership to get everybody to buy in and get to the next level. |

Mayne it's him but Tkachuk didn't really do that in Calgary - in the 6 years he was there they won 2 playoff rounds total and missed the playoffs 3 times.
Maybe it was just him maturing into what he is now though but you have a really good and valid point in having a leader or leadership group who can get guys to buy into a concept or whatever you want to call it that puts the crest of the front before the name on the back of the jersey every time, every shift etc.
When a new player comes to a team do they get told and see 'this is Team X Hockey' "this is what we do, this is how we play" etc. and I'm not talking about systems.
I think Boston does this exceptionally well, Florida seems to have in the past couple years etc. and Toronto just doesn't.
I think the 'leadership' of the team and coaching is part of it.
The Leafs with "A"s on their jerseys got them for accomplishing exactly what? Being exceptionally talented, getting lots of points? They didn't earn them IMO they were given them far too early in their careers here. JT got the "C" as part of the sales pitch and because he had been a captain so we can argue he is the right or wrong guy to wear the C but really but rewarding players for not accomplishing things in hopes they will (same as giving them huge pay bumps in hopes they would do the same) is a huge part of the cultural issue with the Leafs.
Not sure how it can be fixed or if it can be fixed quickly but I sure hope so, it's evident that brining in one guy who they think can do that doesn't work - Marleau, Thornton, RoR, Gio etc.......

I think you need a nice balance of leadership. Smart guys that go out and lead by example and some noisy raw raw types. I love Barkov, everybody loves Barkov. He's been greater than a PPG guy his career with elite defensive play ....but in his first 8 seasons he missed the playoffs 5 times and got crushed quickly in the first round the other times. He had Ekblad, Huberdeau, Big Bob and others and accomplished nothing in the playoffs.
Add Montour, Bennett, Tkachuck and some gritty bottom enders and this team has an identity that they're turning into playoff wins.
