Can I exchange the 2025 first - DirtyDan
Nope. The Leafs paid Carolina a first to take one year of Marleau, so I thought the combination of a higher first and the second would make up for the additional 2 years.

Think he trades the pick, wouldn't be surprised if it's with Jersey either - Buff36
Hmm, I wonder who on NJ would be available and worth that price. Some intriguing forwards on that team and probably some that Ruff likes. I hope you're right either way. |

Theoretical question.
The Kings call and say that they will take Skinner with no celery retained, and he agrees to waive his NMC.
The cost? We have to send this year's first and second picks. Nothing comes back.
do you do it? - Slump Buster
Personally, no. He's not that bad where he warrants losing 11OA. A 2nd and Skinner for nada, fine, sign someone good. 11OA + 2nd + Skinner is just too much, rather hope for one of his good seasons. |

Hate to say it, but I think Carolina's return should spell this out for folks...the Canes got Seth Jarvis for taking on Marleau.

Right, but the other side of that is that Toronto got a giant chunk of cap space back that year that they used to get a player(s).

The other side of this is that I don't think they have any plans on playing him in the top 6. He has shown that he doesn't produce on the third line. He has to play on the top line.

He should be able to produce on the 3rd line if theres the right players. Guys fvckin 30, most experience on the team, talks sh!t like his his day job. Should be able to run a line. He taken the back seat for long enough.

Something else just occurred to me. Has Gerbe been in here recently? I haven't been in much, but the last time I saw him post was when he tipped us off to Meatballs being ejected. |

I hear ya, that being said it was a massive overpayment. We have the cap space to do that, if you can get a top15 pick, I think anyone would sign up for that. |

Sure, but then you'd have Skinner in your lineup every night for 3 years. When he is right, you can usually put up with his warts. If you can't get him there, that's a looooooooooooong time. |

Does he make his own ice-time?
Everyone knows he was playing higher in the lineup than he should have been. Thats not the players fault - DirtyDan
top 5 gm did nothing else for quinn's injury so he had a big part in this as well
how many other gm's are throwing out a 2nd and a 5th for a 4th liner? |

say we give the kings 2025 1st round pick
2024 2nd round pick
jeff skinner
for a 7th
then give the canes 2024 1st round pick, and samuelsson for necas
in the end it would be
skinner
2024 1st
2025 1st
2024 2nd
samuelsson
for necas and a 7th |

I actually would as it would accomplish two things:
1) Skinner will never be a guy that plays in a system. Ever. Quite possibly the worst defensive hockey player in the league.
2). It buys you 27 mill in cap space over the next three years. That allows you to shop or keep your guys. - Slump Buster
So, I hear what you are saying, and there is merrit to it, no doubt.
As I think about it:
- It will cost $6-$8m to replace the 30 Gs he is fully capable of producing on L1, leaving $1-$3m. $3m get's you a L3/4 tweener
-Alternatively, they can kick JJP up to 1st and hope to get that production (but it isn't certain), then kick Benson up to L2 and hope for no sophomore slump. Then use the 9M to help build out a better Bottom six.
-you lose 2 Prospects in the pipeline along the way, and still have the same log jam at the top of the existing prospect pool (unless you use them in trades for L3 & L4 players, which seems like an overpay at first glance)
It may work well.
On the other hand, IF L1 with Skins Tage Tuch return closer to '22-'23 production and L2 of JJP Cozens Quinn continues to improve the Top 6 is pretty good. Get a suitable 3C to cement Benson along with 1 of Kulich/Savoie/Rosen and the Top 9 is very reasonable...young in most cases, but reasonable.
Additionally, they have 2 Prospects (1 should be very good) to reinforce and replace players on cheaper ELC's allowing for investments elsewhere...or as trade chips.
In either case, L4 is a bit of work.
I'd say it is a draw, and an interesting discussion. |

Yes, but that is incomplete. You would have to also include 3x9 in the return, which is significant. I think you'd be right if we were up against the cap and this was the only way to get Necas. We aren't. so the cap savings would be to get another player (or keep players) in addition to Necas coming in.

Celery retained? That's a hefty cap hit for a 4th line center.

Well said. I guess it really does come down to which Skinner are you getting. If you get 35 goal skinner, great. If not... you really don't have to worry about replacing anything as he was a hole in the lineup when not on the first line. I don't know how they keep Peterka off of the first line.

he is also one of the anchors on the top 3 pk team over the last 3 seasons though
so he would improve that department as well |
