Ullmark for the #25 pick, Korpisalo (25% retained by Ottawa) and Kestelic. Staios did good.
- spatso

I'm surprised at this - I do think we ended up on top of that trade unless Ullmark has a built-in defect we don't know about.

I just hope we don't end up giving him a huge expensive extension without trying him first. Tired of this team giving big money on long extension to players that only end up being so-so at best.

Honest thoughts on Kastelic?
- Mahewman

4th line C, big body, great at faceoffs, hits frequently, fights, kills penalties. Not the fleetest of foot and not much finesse, but at 835k there are worse options to man the 4th, and he should fit the Bruins hockey mold nicely. The biggest piece coming back to you is definitely the 1st though.

seems ulmark will play out season and see after if he hits UFA, this could end up being Cat 2.0....

For bottom 6 forwards ..... guys that are jumping out that could be fits ..... Connor Brown, Foegele, Jannmark ....... lots of guys out there who are UFA's. Why pay picks and such for someone like Laughton.

And even if Ullmark does not re-sign, we were able to ditch the really bad Korpisalo contract for essentially adding Kastelik as a sweetener. Again, not ideal if Ullmark does not extend, but not horrible (Korpisalo on a buyout for 8 years ... ??? Nope).

Then you're renting him for a year for a 1st. If they sniff the playoffs, worth it. If they trade him at the TDL, you get that first back....worth it Also worth it to get out from Korpos deal next three years.

I smell another deal coming...

At least he's Swedish. It's Yanks and Russians you generally have to worry about bolting for the States. If the team performs well with him in net, I believe he will sign - he wants to be the consensus #1 somewhere, and he's definitely that in Ottawa. His stat lines are very promising.

They'd be trading for pennies on the dollar again, which always seems to happen with these trades. The first this year isn't 7th overall though so there's that.

The best part is like you said, that they got rid of that bad contract. A little surprised boston did that from that angle of it.

It's possible, but at the same time I think it's only fair to prove to Ullmark that this team has legitimate playoff potential before asking him to commit the rest of his prime years and last major UFA opportunity. I give Staios a lot of credit in this trade... few seriously thought they could move Korpisalo in any trade, let alone in the same deal in which they upgraded in goal. We could see a pretty big trade with PHI coming next... feels like smoke equals fire right now with these trade rumors.

I have absolutely no idea a lot of people in Ottawa (radio, even TV broadcasters across the country) were picking FLA as a bubble team to make the playoffs or not even make it. I thought they were legit cup contenders. This makes me convinced that McDavid will win a cup soon

Believe the first player to win the cup from the 2020 nhl draft is the one player I was unsure about but thought would be a solid 2-way play - Anton Lundell. Wow

Great trade to grab Ullmark while unloading Korpisalo and $3M of his salary. It is a massive upgrade to our goaltending. It should help in enticing a free agent RHD, forward to join the team.

The Tarasenko trade yield is now a 2025 3rd and a 2026 3rd.

Time to trade Chycrun and Joseph.

Forgot the fourth evolves into a 2026 3rd, thanks for the reminder! Staios bet on the Panthers to win and won, that's a nifty feather in the cap. Shedding four years of Korpi with only 25% retention after he put up that year, saddling him to a divisional rival, and in turn getting one of the most statistically consistent goalies of the past decade, is truly magical business.
