If someone ever needed a fresh start.....
Don't think he'll ever become that star winger people expected in his draft year. - Scabeh

So the Leafs need some depth. Why is it that everybody but Shanahan knows this!? - Bullot
Why is everyone scooping up our so called "lack of depth" and making them useful? There depth hasn't been that bad.
Its not one issue, or a magical performance, they have run into good teams (rant directed at Mike) |

they have been top heavy and have to shop the bargain bins for depth.
players also get a spotlight in Toronto, so can get a bigger payday.
maybe the cap rising will help out, but probably not enough to make a diff (rising cap lifts all contracts).

We'll have to see how the new coach does and if they get more out of the depth. Florida's 4th line on paper reads like a list of homeless people, yet they go out there and play like puck retrieving demons. |

Cant argue there. But i think they have done a decent job with bargain basement depth, including deadline additions.

This is my thought exactly. Every team has no names on 4th line. Boston had a bunch of scrubs. They played Maroon on the 1st PP for a while. It was a good series, didnt go our way. I dont want to overreact to that and trade a 95+ pt player for depth. If we trade him, get better on to pairing D

I'm not sure our bottom 6 forwards are much different then most teams over the years. For me, the sacrifice on "depth" really refers to defence and goaltending.
Most good teams run atleast 3 or 4 deep with good 20 minute defencemen ....the Leafs have 1.5 ...with McCabe rounding into one. |

George "I got merked and hate the Leafs" Parros also won a Cup. While it's nice, it doesn't make you a great player. |

I have no ability to not let him have this!!!!!!!!!!
Again Jack Johnson is an elite ATHLETE. He's a decent hockey player. When teams learned the fact the guy could skate around for 30 minutes at full tilt without getting tired didn't mean he should or could, that really saved his career. |

This. The defense is much maligned despite not looking absolutely terrible on paper in the regular season. If you go past Rielly, who do you want to give 20+ minutes per game to? McCabe maybe. Who else? Leafs don't have any other minute munchers, so Rielly gets asked to do far too much.
Look at Tampa now that McDonagh is back. Hedman, McDonagh, and Sergachev can all responsibly eat 20+ minutes per night. Cernak also.
I'd put top-pair D right up there with 1B goalie as the Leafs most pressing needs.

I feel like you could have come up with a much better analogy for the second bit, had you only put forth a little more effort.
Shame.

People keep scooping up our leftovers because we can’t afford to resign them. With 4 of the top 10 players in the league, according to your support the core, should we not be kicking ass on those good teams!? To me that’s the “core” of the problem! We have a core and not a team. We can’t keep hoping for other “teams” to get worse, we need to get better, and with all this money in four players, we will never be good enough to beat a balanced team. I think they’ve shown that for many years now. |

I'd add a Centre to that must have list. After they fill in a few depth guys they will have about 18M to spend this summer. They'll need a fwd, 2 Dmen, and a goalie. I'd guess about $3M on a tender b/c I don't think they'll nab one of the elite types so about $15M left to spend.
Do they go big fish hunting at Centre? Do we like Lindholm at 7.5-8? Or do they nab a pair of top 4 Dmen between $5-$6 and cheap out at centre on a guy like Domi?
Lindholm, Roy, and a cheap dman (~1.5M).
or maybe ...Domi, Roy and Tanev. |
