I think the Sens plan on trading Chychrun and a #1 (25) sometime in the next week.
Would that be enough to tempt the Leafs on a deal for Marner?
I believe the Sens priority is a goaltender (Markstrom or Ulmark) but I think there are too many teams desperate for improved goaltending and the price is going to prove to be unrealistic. Sens second priority is a top 6 forward and Marner is certainly a superior top 6 forward. - spatso
You know I love you, Spatsie.
But there is 0.00% chance Marner waives his NTC to go to Ottawa.
And you know this.
Everyone here knows you know this.
So why post this turd of an idea? |

Marner - Canada Cup
Probably. It is amazing what some of the people that want to get rid of Marner think the return will be for him. Just wondered on what 50's take was because he has a pretty strong opinion that Leafs should not run it back. |

Either Marner takes a pay cut, or he gets traded. The Cap is killing us competitively.

I do not disagree, I just do not think Leafs are getting anything near what will make the "Marner needs to go camp" happy. There is no way they get anything close to what amounts to something the Marner Wives will think is fair. Bottom line most of what you get if Marner goes in a trade or FA is what you end up spend the cap money saved on. |

I cant see there not being some serious moves. Media and fanbase arent going to cool off at all if they try the run it back yet again with minor shuffling of the deck chairs on the titanic for another season.
For me, suspect Domi might end up back but thinking Bertuzzi goes to ufa.
Need a starting goalie, defence, and far more depth/balance to the lineup. Tre got his work cut out for him. |

They really only have 2 decent defensemen coming back, McCabe and Rielly. Leafs have some good young forwards coming in on entry level deals. Whether Bertuzzi stays or go's, it won't matter much. It'll give them $5.5M to grab someone like Zadorov on the back end. Brodie's 5M and Samsonov's $3.6M gets you another defenseman or two. They can cut bait with Liljegren and save another $2M. |

That’s what the trade of 16 gets you.. more balance and depth and the #1 D you crave…

I'm more in the trade Marner's contract camp, than the pure trade Marner camp. If he and Nylander had their best before dates flipped, I'd be in the trade Nylander camp instead.
My expectations for a return are not to have my socks blown off. I'd want a top 6 forward, or top 4 defence-man (top 6/4 on the Leafs, not the team they are leaving), a B+ to A prospect, and a first rounder. Prospect value varies based on draft pick value.
Might not sound great, and I'd prefer another pick or two, but that would be my ask.
After the roster player is accounted for, you're still left with an extra $5 Mega-bucks or so of extra cap space. So roughly $23 million in space this year, plus another $11M next year to remake the roster in Tre's image, along with a much stronger prospect pool.
That's what I want.

Yeah baby. Marner is like Stevie Y and Barkov and McKinnon and Ovi - you don't trade them *before* they win a Cup.
Team loses in OT game 7 and people want to trade our Stevy Y to Ottawa. Berube and Marner are our Bowman and Stevie Y. Go Leafs Go brother woooo |

Everybody who wants to trade Marner is looking for a good old fashioned hockey trade. A deal where the assets exchanged are balanced in some form of equal value for both teams.
Marner camp effectively carries a veto say over any deal that is put on the table. No team is going to offer fair value unless some form of contract extension is agreed to by the Marner camp.
One of the reasons for putting up proposals for an honest hockey trade (eg., chychrun + a first round pick) is to illustrate the highly problematic challenge of finding a deal that works for the Leafs.
Folks keep putting up hoped for magical outcomes in the belief that there are teams and agents out there who are ready to help out the Leafs.
The Leafs are the only team willing to help out the Leafs.
Is it not time for a few folks in the Toronto media to come to their senses and simply say that trading Marner may not be such a great idea? For years the Leaf media have pushed story lines. But when the Leafs respond and do something, the media is the first to crap all over them.
Despite what some folks are pushing everyone needs to pause and take a deep breath. Calls for trading Marner may be a dumb idea, especially when we note that the Tavares contract expires at the end of this season. |

Sure they will, once October starts and the team is willing, people will move on
Besides, a whole new coaching staff and playing style will be rolled out. So they arent just rolling it all back |

Leafs fans call for somebody's head after every single season.
This is nothing new.
And as you correctly write above, the fans will embrace Marner on opening night. He's an amazing player to watch, who has consistently put up points throughout his career.
For me, suspect Domi might end up back but thinking Bertuzzi goes to ufa.

I can't possibly see Bertuzzi coming back. He's going to get $5M+ somewhere else, which the new team will instantly regret.
I'd like to see Domi back. His 5v5 points/60 were off the charts. If Berube can teach him how to play defence, he could be a steal.

Deck chairs on the Titanic. If this core returns, it's a HUGE run back.
And Marner is not going to change because there is a new coach. He's not going to turn into a north-south net crasher.

Doesnt have to crash the net.
But he can change his style of play a bit.
It wont be overnight, it will take time for berube's vision to take hold.
We havent had a cup or visit to the 3rd round in decades, whats another year? |

Unpopular opinion about Berube.
He's not much of a teacher, neither is he a systemic coach.
He's one hell of a motivator though.
