Offer him Nylander's exact contract. Not a penny more.
To paraphrase the immortal Ivan Drago, "If he walks, he walks." - Atomic Wedgie
I agree with this and have been saying this for months.
However, i think he'll want a bigger raise than just over half a million.

maybe he loves his long summer and it is worth leaving a bit of money on the table to maintain the status quo. |

They should NOT offer him the Nylander contact. The core does not win. Resigning Marner turns this team into the San Jose Sharks - a good team that cannot win. I'll say it again - how much evidence do you need to see this core cannot win? - fifty__missions

Roll it back.
People love shiny regular season things.
Besides, they'll have a new coaching staff and vision, maybe that changes things up a bit .
This is a throwaway year, was always gonna be, with am and willies new overpayment deals coming into play. Next year, the cap increase much more apparently and we have $22m or more coming off the books.
Just roll with it |

Best browser, not even close. - Rare_Jewel
I didn't say best browser, I said it's possibly the best adblocker built into a browser without using an add-on extension. The best browser is the one that meets the needs of your use case.
For me, it's Brave for most browsing and watching games. I use Chrome to stream movies because of issues with encoding when using encrypted streams.
I haven't seen a single ad or pop-up on HB since I switched to Brave. I also don't see ads on YouTube either, which is one of the sites that many ad-blocker plugins have issues with.
Just disable the crypto nonsense in the settings and it's like Chrome, but de-Googled and better.

I can't wait until training camp when Marner is still a Leaf so I can read here multiple times daily how they "changed deck chairs on the Titanic" and "ran it back" or "didn't break up the core" and are doomed to lose and fail because of this.
The only thing I am certain of is that if this is how it plays out (which is pretty likely) the daily rant and cry sessions in here will be epic.
As much as the poster who is on the 3 month timeout whose name we shall not utter annoys the hell out of many with the constant MM love fest / WN hatefest made me at times just pray they would trade MM away, the constant proclamations that this team absolutely can not win with this core etc. also makes me hope they keep the core intact and win with this core.
Win / Win I guess

At least try something different. If you're gonna lose anyway, at least give it a shot ffs. The team is nowhere close to Cup level. |

Marner is worth whatever a team is willing to pay, like any commodity.
If his ask is too high for the Leafs, somebody else will probably pay it unless his demands are completely unreasonable.
My gut tells me that Marner won't end up signing in Toronto again.
I don't care how big his hat is, or how soft he is, I'd like to see him stay and produce, but not if re-signing him puts the team back into top-heavy cap hell.
Ideally, I would shoot Tavares into the Sun and use the cap savings to re-sign Marner. But again, I don't see that happening either, for reasons.

The good news is that one way or another (trade or no trade) the Marner story should be dead in 2 weeks. The Leafs would really need to know what's up by July 1 so IF there's any possibility of a Marner trade we'll be hearing the rumours percolating before the draft.
If he says no to waiving so be it. Let him bet on himself and have a big year ...just don't make the same mistake you did with 88 ....wait until AFTER the playoffs to negotiate. |

Heard interesting comment about US broadcast networks finishing off plans changing broadcast scheduling and promotion styles. They want to focus on NHL star players rather than on traditional tv markets.
Small market Kansas City wins Superbowl with a record number of viewers. This is their starting point in working towards a regular season star centred tv package.
Hard to convince fans they should watch McDavid and Barkov square off in finals when they received so little out of market attention during the regular season. Imagine how shocking it is for some casual NHL tv fans to discover that Panarin is not on the top of anyone's MVP list.
Let's see. Watch for more Edmonton weeknd home games scheduled as afternoon and 5:00 pm (mountain time) starts. - spatso

They need quality dmen.
Spend every penny on D and a cheap goalie and fill forward spots with kids.
Also, honest question.
Say they trade marner, do you trust Tre to spend the cap space wisely?
Or will he just overpay for Tanev, who will be injured most of the time? |

Not saying he’s going anywhere but Marner’s game does not match up with what Berube likes done. Marner is a fancy east/west or north/south guy with very little physical play. Unfortunately that’s not how Berube likes the game played. He wants North/south and at least reasonable physical play, not dominant I’m not stupid, but not soft nonsense either. It’s not talent at question, it’s the type of talent.
Let’s face the truth, if Marner goes it will be after July 1st when that primary pay is gone and he’ll only cost a team $775K for the year. The returns offered would be notably better and do you really think the ownership of the leafs care that much about $7.5 mill? Billionaires really don’t. The question is how much does Roger’s have to do for investors, many of which won’t be hockey fans and do not give a rats ass. However he’s not worth the $12.5 million he will be after at the very least either. What are the leafs supposed to do there as well? “Yes we gave Nylander a $4 mill raise but you only get $600K”. That ain’t flying.
The primary question is will Berube just use him in the secondary offence if he doesn’t agree to do what the leafs want done. That’s my only curiousity. |

If Bruins players could do it why not some Leafs?
I certainly won't shed any tears if he demands 12 to 12.5. But it will impact Leaf's ability to fill in gaps. If the guy loves TO as much as he purports to, you'd think he'd be open to leaving some money on the table. But who knows...

In the hypothetical world of a MM trade you think all the parties only begin speaking after July 1?
Not a chance ...it won't be executed until July 1 but in the Cap world teams need to get their poop together (all the big planning) in June so they're ready for July 1 and know how much they have to spend and which holes to fill. They can't leave a Marner trade beyond July 1 unless they already know what they expect to get back in return.
If the rumours are true then teams have a window now to express interest ...then Tree takes those to MM to see if there's anything that works for him. That all needs to happen prior to July 1 and then, yes, the deal likely happens on or after July 1.
Either way ..waive, no waive, we should know in the next two weeks.
