I agree with this and have been saying this for months.
However, i think he'll want a bigger raise than just over half a million. - Fakepartofme
You may have been saying for months to give Marner the exact same contract as Nylander, but you never paraphrased Ivan Drago. |

They need quality dmen.
Spend every penny on D and a cheap goalie and fill forward spots with kids.
Also, honest question.
Say they trade marner, do you trust Tre to spend the cap space wisely?
Or will he just overpay for Tanev, who will be injured most of the time? - Fakepartofme
Do you mean for this year assuming it's a bit of a write off? I ask because it hasn't been either of those things that has caused them to lose in the playoffs, it's been the 10+Million dollar stars not producing that has been the issue consistently.
Granted right now they need D because the will have lost / have no contract with Gio, Brodie, Eddy and Boosh leaving only the following 5 D under contract:
Reilly
McCabe
Benoit
Timmons
Webber
They also need a 1B to Woll with a back up to the back up due to Woll's injury concerns.
They need to either figure out how to get scoring come playoffs from the big money players and/or to add up front to make that happen and increase the secondary scoring but I could understand if you are saying that's a 'next off season when JT's money is off the books' thing with perhaps another bigger move etc.

In the hypothetical world of a MM trade you think all the parties only begin speaking after July 1?
Not a chance ...it won't be executed until July 1 but in the Cap world teams need to get their poop together (all the big planning) in June so they're ready for July 1 and know how much they have to spend and which holes to fill. They can't leave a Marner trade beyond July 1 unless they already know what they expect to get back in return.
If the rumours are true then teams have a window now to express interest ...then Tree takes those to MM to see if there's anything that works for him. That all needs to happen prior to July 1 and then, yes, the deal likely happens on or after July 1.
Either way ..waive, no waive, we should know in the next two weeks. - The Law
Not everything happens on July 1st. As for offers I wouldn’t be shocked if teams give them two right now. Make them pay $8.275 mill or just $775K which is a safe bet that will affect the offer.
As of right now I’m willing to bet the leafs know where he’d accept being dealt to and they’re seeing what the offers from those teams look like. |

Oh I won’t expect him gone or staying. A pre season extension would be a tad weird (unless he signs without a NTC) but otherwise I can see him with the leafs all year as well. Don’t think he’ll be a good fit under the new coach but oh well. |

If Bruins players could do it why not some Leafs?
I certainly won't shed any tears if he demands 12 to 12.5. But it will impact Leaf's ability to fill in gaps. If the guy loves TO as much as he purports to, you'd think he'd be open to leaving some money on the table. But who knows... - Nasty_Duck
agreed, make a decent offer and it's up to him to take it or else the team is forced to move him |

You know they're going to trade him on July 2nd, and his new team will win the Stanley Cup while we pay him $7,250,000 and the new team pays him $775,000?
You know that, right?

And you think the leafs will win it if they keep him?
Doubt it. They won’t be able to afford the talent in other positions they need.
Then you’ll see the same trolls popping in here to mock us because the leafs didn’t move him. lol

They should NOT offer him the Nylander contact. The core does not win. Resigning Marner turns this team into the San Jose Sharks - a good team that cannot win. I'll say it again - how much evidence do you need to see this core cannot win? - fifty__missions
You and I agree.
For 7 years they've tried "the Core" plus a revolving door of support players.
It's time they try "the Team" approach by getting players they can afford to keep for a few years while the TEAM gels and wins together.
The CORE 4 will win regular season. A TEAM will win the Cup.
Marner's $12-13M could go a long way to fixing that issue. |

I found a promo water bottle from the 2024 NHL ASG. It's pretty neato because it's heat-sensitive material that turns blue when the cold hits it, so it's like a blue Kool Aid level indicator.

Oh I agree, our overpaid core forwards disappear on special teams and at key moments in the playoffs......but we're stuck with them.
But with new Dmen, at least two top four Dmen, we would have new targets for the leafs nation anger!!!!
And thats all we really want1

Look at summer signing history ....99% of the heavy lifting is done July 1 ..maybe slides into day 2. Especially this year when teams have loads of loot to spend.
I agree though - if MM is open to a move, and if there are teams interested in paying the price - they probably are well down that road to knowing if it might work. That was my original point. This Marner poop should be well down the pipe and practically to the sphincter in the next week or two and if it's not I think most will put the story to bed and get on with demonizing him. |
