I'm sure DB has a few different scenarios working. Taking these moves by themselves doesn't consider larger picture. Just say Risto is in play to be moved (God willing) then signing EJ makes more sense.
Grans was average AHL dman last year. Unless he develops over the summer, I don't see him as an option. Zamula, Attard, Ginning, Andre, maybe. I don't see any of them as higher than bottom pair (on a good team). |
|
|
|
That's my assumption. A buyout is the worst possible outcome in this situation. I don't want to read buying out Cam helps with potential bonus overages. Nope. Maximize cap space for next summer. Stop treating Laughton like Mark Messier and move him. - Trox88
if they buy cam and cal out, makes you wonder why. Free agent incoming? big trade they need cap space?
just ride them out. can't get any more simpler. |
|
|
|
Ginning is waiver exempt till the start of the 25/26 season, or until he plays another 60 NHL games. Attard is no longer waiver exempt.
Kevin Kurtz reports the Flyers are in talks to re-sign Erik Johnson. - Feanor
Let the nonsense begin. |

I doubt they buyout both. Petersen can be in a tandem with Kosolov in LV.
If they trade for a young center like Rossi, Perfetti, or Pinto, then creating cap space can make sense. They need to start filling the center cupboard with below 25 choices

I personally think Ginning played better than Attard when they were called up. - MBFlyerfan

for a team not anywhere close to contending, why drag out any dead cap space in future years? |

I can't believe I'm typing this but I'd rather have Ristolainen instead of Johnson.
Don't get it twisted I'm with ya. I'd love to trade Ristolainen but that's a tall task.

Because you believe the asset being acquired will be here for a long time. I would rather movee Laughton. Personally, I like Rossi and Pinto. Both are RFAs. They don't solve the 1C issue, but they solidify the 2C position. I have no issue acquiring young talent outside the draft. |

if he is coming off missing last what 25 games and surgery. he has zero value at the moment and had very little at best when healthy.
unless retaining 50% he is unmovable or an equally bad contract coming back. Though I can see teams interested in his playoff experience. He is built for the playoffs. |

so if they are clearing cap space for now means they have something cooking. a free agent will be here for a long time...in theory anyway.
no need to make a big move unless a trade. clear as much cap out now so you can maybe do something in 2025 and beyond.

In theory, yes. Make a hockey trade (any combo of picks and/or players) this summer for an RFA that will be here for the long term and will be a strong contributor when the team is ready to compete. If Rossi, Pinto, or Perfetti get moved most likely will be this sunmer, not next summer- all RFAs. Otherwise, there is no need to buyout Atkinson because the team is not competing this year or next year.

What do you think a Flyer trade for Rossi looks like? Guerin is all about bigger, faster, and stronger. I don’t see a center that Guerin would want. What young Flyer defenseman fits that bigger faster stronger criteria ?

So dumb. Is this because Torts has trust issues with younger players? Or is this a DB 3D chess move? |

If they buy out Atkinson and use the additional cap to take on salary for assets I am fine with that.

Sorry Cam, not sure you have a lot of leverage. I would be comfortable making Cam the 13th fwd and just ride out this contract. - Trox88
Russ Cohen and team on Locked On Flyers were discussing this scenario but without retaining and instead moving back in the draft, swapping 12 for 14. I wanted to break my phone it was so dumb. They thought it was a good idea….I mean, WTF!? |

That's a good question. Maybe Farabee (or another young player) gets moved to a 3rd team and Briere gets Rossi that way. Just hypothetical.

Or the Flyers can play hardball. They can tell him that he ain’t playing in the NHL if he’s on the Flyers. He has value of the Flyers eat half his contract to some of these rebuilding teams with young talent and the need for veteran of good character and reputation. San Jose and Chicago come to mind. |

he aint keen lol....so the flyers will do what is best for cam and buy him out. That stuff goes a long way. Players respect that. Come free agency and trades players will look back and say that is a great organization. - hello it's me 2050
Is this sarcasm?
But why can't the Flyers just say "Hey Cam, you can continue in San Jose or we will need to send you to Lehigh. A buyout just doesn't make sense for us."
Plenty of teams have sent vets to the minors. If it's a business for players then the team should treat it the same way.

If the Sharks aren’t on his 10 team and he doesn’t want to go what do they do? Do they try to move him to a team more to his liking? That’s something you might do for a Giroux but you would hope not for Cam.

Ok.
I was hoping so because I thought we were on the same page and then I read that and was like WTF.
If he wants his say then he can go to management and ask them to mutually terminate the deal. If i am in charge I either say it's SJ where you can stick in the NHL or Lehigh. We are not buying you out

Torts would never allow his boy Cam to go down to the AHL.
I'm fine with a buyout. The Flyers already have Hayes on the cap for 25-26 so what's the matter with another chunk of dead cap for a team going nowhere.
