Can you tell me what future consequences the NY Rangers suffered when they signed Wade Redden to a large UFA contract and then later, demoted him to the AHL? Honestly, it's not a thing and there will be zero future issues from waiving and demoting Atkinson. Nor would it be screwing him over. He either plays well enough or faces the consequences.

Utah had ZERO defensemen under contract for next year. 3 RFA’s and of them, Durzi is the only legit defenseman. If Utah want to be competitive, they need 3 more top 4 defenders through trade or free agency and it’s not a great year for UFA free agents on the blue line. Utah is gonna be buying.

They only owe him a paycheck. He isn't even a homegrown guy where "maybe" there could be sentiment involved in a move like this.

What about players that are out playing Atkinson. Does the team not owe it to them?

If he doesn't want to go to Lehigh then he can ask for the contract to be mutually terminated and he can look for another place. A buyout would be foolish.

Unless Johnson only plays in emergency situations and is acting more like a coach than anything else, I don't think it makes sense to resign Johnson. Signing him and retaining Risto leaves only 1 spot for a young defenseman to make the team, and there are 4 young defenseman that I would like to see have a legitimate shot: Grans, Andrae, Ginning and Attard.

Is buying PLD out even realistic? They’d be carrying a cap hit for like 14 years, wouldn’t they? I don’t think the number would be crazy high but 14 years is an eternity in pro sports.

My form of online debate is not combative. It's common sense based and factual based. You're trying to state that the Flyers would face some sort of blow back or retribution if they waive and demote Atkinson the AHL. That they would be violating some sort of principle or code that would cost them somehow. There is no history of that. There is tons of history of players who were once good players, having their game of south and been sent to the AHL or bought out. There is no punitive damage from that.

From what I read if they buy him out before he turns 26, he would be owed only 15.8 million in salary, but save the Kings .31.6 millioin salary. The buyout term is ugly, but it's a huge bet Blake is taking that PLD turns it around.

I honestly think they are stupid to buy him out. That June 24th date might screw them if the Stanley cup goes 7 games…. I’d keep him and give him a chance to get it figured out….rumour was he was headed to Boston as part of the Ulmark trade at the deadline, before Ulmark refused to waive his no trade. My point is I think he’s tradable and wonder if all this talk is to generate interest from others.
