Turtl sucks
Let it go

Just to recap what I think I've seen here:
fake is big on Hertl & Theodore
I think underhill is big on PLD +
You are big on a trade with Columbus or Anaheim featuring some of their younger players . . .
For the record I'm also not a huge fan of Hertl. He's a big guy, but he's on the wrong side of 30, signed at basically $7m until he's 36 and he's never been a PPG guy. Theodore would certainly be nice, but he has just the one year left, so it would depend on what was added to him. But with Vegas I don't really see anyone with Theodore who moves that needle enough.
I loathe PLD.
. . .and with the young guys from Anaheim or Columbus, I'm not sure we have the luxury of that time - like I'm sure Johnson, Fantilli, Carlsson, Gauthier or McTavish will all be impactful players, but it's likely going to take them a couple of years to get to where they start to be who we need them to be now.
The challenge with any Marner trade, speculated or not, is that we basically can afford to lose some of his offensive production if we supplement it with a stronger defense, push some of our stressed defense down in positions to lesser roles, reduce some of our cap stress to perhaps gain real insurance in net in case Woll remains injury-prone or is truly unready for day-to-day NHL stresses - and some facsimile of him up front. I don't know if we can afford to lose time and that's the problem I have with getting too many futures.

This is true - same as the random small screw that you put on the window ledge and leave for 6 months and your wife tosses in the garbage. You absolutely need it the next day. - Cush29

Agree about the luxury of time. Leafs have Matthews in his prime. He needs support that is mature and ready for the long slog of deep playoff runs. Knies is on the cusp, maybe a couple of others will step up next season - it would be nice to see Benoit evolve into a Cernak type. Like plugging Ekholm into Edmonton's defense, the Leafs need somebody to re-kajigger their defense pairings and make everyone fall into proper place for deployment and icetime. Rielly is asked to do too much and the whole lineup of pairings suffers for it.
Trading Marner (or anyone) for a bag of picks and prospects does not help this team win now during Matthews' prime.

PLD has been coasting on the Toronto Media for "shutting down" Matthews for longer than he was in the league at that time.

Some people want to kick that can down the road since they can't win. Some fans I've read elsewhere think Matthews can be traded because "his goal scoring didnt help them win in the playoffs".
Trade or dont trade Marner. I don't care. I just want to see the leafs stars perform.

If they went the futures route they'd have to have a plan in place to fill in with names like Reinhart or Lindholm or Guentzal.
I'm 99% sure he's a Leaf when the playoffs start next year but hypothetically that's not a bad way of doing business. Marner for sexy young assets ...sign Reinhart or Guentzal.

I'm also pretty sure Marner is on the team this year. The problem with trading Marner and then signing a replacement for him from the top-end UFA pool is that Guentzel is going to be looking for $9 - $9.5m - as, I suspect, will Reinhart.
If we've overloaded our front-end with too many high earning players, trading Marner for more balance only to replace Marner with a slightly cheaper version of Marner who may skew the offensive balance the wrong way doesn't seem like it's righting the listing ship especially when it doesn't leave the financial flexibility we'd want from moving on from a star player.
If I'm making a deal with Marner it has to feature a top-end RHD or an elite goalie to start with. The problem is that those names aren't really all that moveable. Teams that have those guys recognize their rarity and aren't going to move them, even though Marner is a top-3 RW in the league. The difference between the #3 RW and the #10 RW is not so stark that you'd be willing to give up first pairing RHD that only a handful of teams actually have.

Agreed. I just meant that if you save 2-3M on the Guentzal vs. Marner manuevre and factor in some cheap assets from the Marner trade ...plus some money to spend this summer and in a post-JT world ...and you've got lots of money to add to the blue line and g'tending ...I think.
