Be interesting. I think we do tend to hang onto it too long. Looking for that perfect set up to Matthews for the shot. Stifled creativity locked into set pattern only.
Im fine with the hire. Bench overhauled. First change implemented.
Now the focus moves to Tre and the roster. - Roadrunner75
I just hope their pp plan isnt like keefes......pass the puck the Matthews. That was too predictable |

“I don’t like guys holding onto the puck long,” said Savard.

Said every coach from peewee through midget to …. All time…. 🙄🙄🙄😂😂😂😂😂
I hope that’s not all he’s got … 😀😀😀😀
I do find it odd the let Clune go after from what I read he helped turn the Marlies PP around quite a bit - |

Helping some ahl'ers organize a PP is one thing but asking the guy who's scored 8 NHL goals to provide instruction to 34 and co. might be a little much.
Plus, Leafs bench staff already has too much snot ...needed to add some skill. |

Leafs Nation has a piece on getting top prospect Rutger McGroarty from the Jets. Worth it for the name alone and the fact that the Nebraska kid grew up a Leafs fan. |

Isn't Rutger McGroarty a college player?
Doesn't he have a choice whether to sign with the Jet or not by August 15th ish?
even if the Jet trade his rights, he still could say " I'm not signing with that team".
Are the Jets willing to lose him for nothing if the cost is to high?

I feel like I could definitely add that leadership ability,” McGroarty explained. “I could come in and bring that compete and energy. Being a kid that’s always been a Toronto fan, I’ve always been a big fan of them. And I got a lot of friends up there so I feel like I’d be comfortable in the Toronto area.” |

you would think they would want draft pick(s) instead?
Robertson can get a 10% increase from his 775k contract.
Lilly is going to be in the 2M range, so that not much of a savings for Vegas. |

Savard coached the league's #3 powerplay in St. Louis in 2019-20. The year prior the Blues were 10th and the year following they were 6th.
Last year in Calgary he did not have much success with the 25th ranked powerplay. At the time of the Elias Lindholm trade the Flames had the league's 29th ranked power player and were most rolling out Kadri-Lindholm-Huberdeau with Andersson at the point. They'd roll in Backlund, Sharangovich or Zary - various changes were made to the last forward, but the core group just wasn't getting it done. I mean through 49 games Huberdeau was +5 (11 GF / 6 GA). And former Selke nominee Lindholm wasn't much better at +9 (13GF / 4 GA).
One trade later - Lindholm is out and Kuzmenko is in - AND they move Weegar to the top PP unit more often than Andersson.
For the remaining 33 games the Flames PP is 12th in the league - and this is not featuring any real superstar talent with Kadri-Huberdeau-Kuzmenko and Shangovich as the forwards. But that powerplay, by contrast, saw Huberdeau with 21GF/2GA in those 33 games.
Talent matters as well as coaching. The Leafs, I felt, fell victims to every play being forced to Matthews. Marner was desperate to get it to Matthews. Rielly was desperate to get it to Matthews or Marner. Tavares frequently had little purpose other than to stand in the middle or cycle to the back of the net. As a distraction he was too high; as a rebounder he was too high. As a contributor to move the puck he was in decent position, but since they rarely used him, his role was quite diminished - and it was reflected in his PP production, halved from 18G/21A the year prior to 9G/11A this year.
While Nylander was up this year on the PP, the other guys were all about the same. Institute some movement with the puck and encourage plays towards the net and just taking the shot - especially for Marner (if he's here).
I actually think the PP is somewhere where you provide options, plays and structure - but you have to let them go and can't overcoach it or direct it. The more you do the worse it'll be because it'll be predictable and likely telegraphed.
