Dumb move. Calgary's PP sucked. - Rare_Jewel
In the second half of the season, they ranked 12th, tied with the Leafs. With half of the talent. |

word is they value him as a top 10 pick and want a prospect equivalent to that value. - Symba007
If he’s decided he’s not going to sign, how they value him doesn’t matter that much. The fact that multiple teams are likely interested does matter. |

it will cost you more than the 24th IMO - Symba007
Probably. McGroarty likely is better than who we'd get at 24 - but I guess that comes down to what the scouting staff thinks is / will be available. Out of all the speculation among the various players here, I don't know who is and isn't returning, but I don't think Liljegren is coming back. The problem with him being included is that I'm not sure he's a Cheveldayoff type of defender.

I think we forget where these guys come from sometimes, what they are used to, and the fact that while still in the minors they may have a big signing bonus but make next to no money. You can go through that bonus pretty quick if you are tired of eating McDonalds.
It might be a long shot, but a lot more realistic for him than a prospect from the USA

I feel like I could definitely add that leadership ability,” McGroarty explained. “I could come in and bring that compete and energy. Being a kid that’s always been a Toronto fan, I’ve always been a big fan of them. And I got a lot of friends up there so I feel like I’d be comfortable in the Toronto area.” - mr.sir

Tree should be targeting Scrotey McBoogerballs. I'm sold just based on the name.
Unrelated : I want to see double+ overtimes in game 7. Make the winner sweat for it and make the loss that much more crushing for the loser. Make it so.

Ya. I like the idea of being aggressive with the young "about to blossom" guys but that seems high. Although - I think that buys out 2 UFA years ...so maybe not too bad. |

That sounds terribly high.
Woll has 38 career NHL starts, including the playoffs. 23 of those are considered quality starts (.900 save percentage or better). His QS% of 60.5% is better than the league average of 54.1%, but it's such a small sample size.
Comparably, Knight had 51 NHL starts - but he was drafted 13th overall - but signed a $4.5m x 3 year deal. Kochetkov signed a $2m x 4 year deal with 26 NHL starts (QS% of 57.7%).
Binnington and Hill had won cups. Oettinger had 77 NHL starts and had posted an solid QS% of 59.7%.
I still feel like I wouldn't be offering Woll more than a 1 year show-me deal because I don't believe he can stay healthy and I still don't know if he can handle the workload associated with a $3.5 - $4m deal.
That said the Flyers just gave Fedotov $3.275 x 2 and he has 3 NHL starts and sucked.

I think I scanned an article that said he wanted to be moved because he didn't like the way they were developing him? I was not really paying attention because I had no idea the Leafs would be in the mix, but I think he is going back to college because he thought he should be in the NHL and the Jets wanted him in the AHL (which I think is fair)

My read is that they're going to find him a cheap partner this year and expect/hope that he can be healthy and take the reins. If he has a good year he goes into next summer with 1 yr of control/arbitration and could probably demand 5+.
So they're playing the lock him up early/cheaper game. |

If they felt he was a sure thing and they felt that Liljegren was just not going to be a part of our future here, then it might not be a bad deal, if again, the assessment of what's available in 20-30 isn't that great.
It's a lot of guesswork, but McGroarty, by all accounts, is an NHL ready player. He's solid and has excelled at the WJC and in the NCAA. He's still a kid, but he's an excellent PP and PK option as well for his teams. I was trying to remember and couldn't so I gave it a quick Google - the guys they say he plays like are Blake Coleman or Zach Hyman.
You'd give up a 1st and Liljegren for a young Zach Hyman - if he were already at the 25yo version of himself at age 21 - similarly, peak Coleman was a guy who was capable of 25 goals. So probably worth it?
I think the question really is - how long would it take him to get to where they'd need him to be? Coleman was 26 when he became impactful; Hyman, I'd likely argue, was 25.
