I'm just curious why some think that the team that's had arguably the worst five-year period of draft luck, should have turned their team around in half of the time it took most other teams. I would suggest that all of the experts who know way more about running an NHL hockey team than Yzerman, and who know way more about scouting 17-year-old players than one of the largest scouting programs in the NHL, should probably wait to see how things play out. If you think Yzerman dumped Walman and a 2nd just to get rid of $3.4 million in cap space, well...let's just say irresponsible decisions were made during conception. Not every move is a stand-alone move. and this certainly wasn't one.
If you think you'd have Detroit in contention within the five years Yzerman has had, you haven't paid much attention to hockey history. It took Colorado 9 years from the time they started their rebuild to compete for a cup. Edmonton started their rebuild in 2011 and it took them 13 years to compete for a cup. It took TB 11 years to compete, Florida started their rebuild more than 12 years ago. Heck, Toronto is STILL in their rebuild. All of those teams had something Detroit hasn't had, draft luck. Edm had four #1s, a #3 and a #7 in six years. Col, FL & TB all had #1 picks. When he took the job, Yzerman warned this was going to take a long time, but apparently the expectation by Detroit fans, is he should have accomplished it in half the time that most other teams do.

As usual, total hyperbole in a response.
Nobody here has claimed to have the credentials to run an NHL team.
Nobody said drafting teenagers is an exact science. But when the only success is top 10 picks and nearly a complete graveyard on everything else, well, that is very far from excellence. It's awful.
Nobody said other GMs don't make mistakes. They all do. Bad trades. Bad signings. But we're quite a bit worse than other franchises. Nearly every UFA signing or trade acquisition now has negative value - Husso, Holl, Chiarot, Copp, Petry, Kostin. Pro scouting "approves" these moves. Why hasn't Yzerman fired them all?
Nice lesson on rebuild times. Nobody actually said Detroit should be in contention right now. I didn't. Rebuilds do take time. But our rebuild is not going very well. We have some nice prospects in the pipeline - hope they turn out better than Jurco, Frk, Svech, Mantha, Zadina, Cholowski, - because in the past we've also been recognized for a great prospect pipeline. But we have no 1C. We have a number of bloated contracts on the books. And we are now flushing draft capital down the toilet to erase these mistakes. But you seem OK with it. Which is fine.
Finally, I see many of you saying wait and see what comes next. Sorry. It doesn't work that way for me. If they turn around and sign Pesce for $1 to replace Walman, that doesn't erase the fact that the Walman trade was ridiculously bad. If you sell your Honda Civic for $1,000 and then turn around and find a BMW for a really amazing deal, that doesn't erase the fact that you got robbed when selling your Civic. But that example may be too complicated to follow for some.
