Askarov is 22, 6'3" and one of the top goaltending prospects in the world. He won't come cheap but Nashville just signed Saros to an 8 year, 7.5 AAV deal. He's the undisputed #1 guy. Askarov could find himself in the same situation as Rask once was with the Leafs. He's worth the gamble given his pedigree and skillset.

If you bring in Askarov, his cap hit is tiny and he can split the net with Woll. Whoever is healthier and better, wins the starter job.

Add a true #1 d-man, a stud 2C, and a starting goalie and this team is in good position.

Marner ain't signing for 11.6M but I do think this team can compete with a core of AM34, BillNy, 2C, 1D, 1G.

And no, I don't think it's impossible to add the 2C, 1D, 1G. And yes, I may be delusional.

They can either trade Saros later as he molds into the goalie of the future, or they can kill it in a trade if Saros is stuck in. Seems similar to the Luongo/Schneider situation which worked out pretty well for all involved.
