You're right. Cowan and Minten were picked earlier than they were projected and it's worked out well so far. Benefit of the doubt I guess but this seems like a huge miss. Solberg was a perfect fit imo. Emery, Greentree or Elick would have worked too

Montreal will be walking all over the leafs in a few years.
😞

Won't be for a little while but I like what the team has done so far under Kent Hughes.
It'll still take some time to compete though.

I was 100% sure the Leafs would pick Solberg. He looked like the best guy still avaiable to me. And he filled a need for the Leafs moving forward.

I agree, and Elick at 31, but only based on what I read.

It could be me glorifying the olden days - but wasn’t the draft a more crazy trade time 15 or so years ago? Lacklustre.
- Big23Questions

Day 2 is usually when the trades of players happens. Unless they're traded for a pick in the first round.

So lets hope tomorrow has some fireworks for us.

From the tweeter

One OHL coach told me #LeafsForever    No. 31 pick Ben Danford was one of the smartest — and meanest — players in the draft.

“He’s mean. Whoever takes this guy is getting someone who will be a 22-minute-a-night guy in a few years.”

I've seen a few posts saying similar. Hope they're correct.

Man super lazy eh!! Holy cow. That’s why we ended selling Bridgewater place - had a property man agent group out there but honestly the tenant situation was hot and cold over the time we held onto it….Lunenberg is too beautiful. Family loves getting out there as much as we can. Wouldn’t live there but amazing to go out on vacations

I grew up in the Annapolis valley, so not super familiar with Lunenburg but regularly played there for hockey, visited, etc. Imagine it's the same laid back mentality as the rest of the province.

100% viewed as retirement life and nothing more, and all the locals really appreciate someone buying their family home as a summer home, but also real estate and the economy needs the boon.

I don't really visit unless it's for a funeral. Which kind of sucks but meh, was never really drawn to that side of the country.

Leafs tried the old "trade down" game and probably got screwed again.

Looks like they tried to trade down for EJ Emery and got swooped by the Rangers. So they picked the next best "defensive RHD" they had on their list and hope to get something at 58th. It didn't work the last time they did it with the Dermott trade down experiment.

Would have been nice to see the Leafs swing a trade for Askarov using the 1st round pick as part of the package rather than draft a guy who probably won't play regularly for 4 or 5 years. If you don't believe that, look at Liljegren's career.

Alternatively, it would have been nice to see if the Leafs could have put together a package to move up to 11th before San Jose did to get D ickinson. That would have been (and will be for San Jose) a steal of a move.

This Leafs management team has given the Leafs 0 reason to have faith in their drafting process because outside of lottery picks, they rarely yield NHL results.

Gotta give them the benefit of the doubt,.. If they really wanted Emery they would have taken him and not traded back. They may have had him on the list but were not sold on him. Or maybe the guy they wanted went early and Danforth was the guy that they wanted next.

Nobody should ever give the Leafs the benefit of the doubt until they prove there's a reason to do so, especially at the draft.

Your job running a pro sports franchise should net you at least an analyst job on sportsnet. No? You're just a couch potato GM like the rest of us and knowing next to nothing? oh okay.

Something is missing in this Leaf draft. As some folks have already noted: the Leafs traded down then selected a player that was probably ranked as much as 15 picks lower from his projected draft position.

Has anyone heard an explanation of the Leaf's reasoning for the move?

My best guess is the Leafs have an offer on Marner that includes top prospects that would make their own pick from last night make sense.

I would also think that any delay on a Marner trade (if it is happening) has something to do with the bidding for Stamkos.

Does Utah offer Stamkos the money it would theoretically cost them to resign Marner?

And, sometimes, strange events are nothing more than what they appear to be. Maybe this is the guy the Leafs believe offers the physical blue line presence that every team seems to want.

Interesting the Sens did something very similar selecting a big physical RD over multiple players ranked higher in the predraft projections.

I’m sure you would have done better but Leafs first picks over the past 5 years haven’t been bad.

Cowan - 28
Minten - 38
Knies - 57
Amirov - 15
Robertson - 53
