I trust Flahr .. if he and his scouts say Luchenko is their guy .. I am in. Lets see how it works out. Luchenko has a lot of offensive upside and skill. Don't dwell on where the mock drafts had him .. it doesn't matter one bit.

Fair... but we are flyers fans.... you already know

I guess we gotta be in and hope his offense is all they think he is.

I forget who, but someone had him around 12 just after Sennecke.

But stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

Really? Why… they just took a Scott Laughton clone and passed on a guy that could actually be a true # 1D ….thrilled… I wish now he would have trade 3 first round picks if that’s what he going to do with them…stupid

Feel bad for Jett, now in the York spot in relation to Caufield. Only 17, next year curious what kind of jump he incurs.

They pass on Buium, a potential 1D, and only get a 3rd rd pick out of it. Then they pass on Helenius for Luchenko? Completely asinine. He’s also a small center. So he’s gonna be a 3rd line center or 2nd line winger. WTF!

It took our team some time to warm up to Jett Luchanko’s game. We knew and appreciated the prospect’s speed after watching him in his draft-minus-one season, but his offensive breakout with the Guelph Storm took us by surprise.

The unexpected absence of Mattew Poitras, a comparable prospect to Luchanko who spent his season with the Boston Bruins, opened a hole in Guelph’s lineup. And Luchanko jumped at the opportunity to take it and show his skills. He became the de facto motor of the team’s offence, finishing the season with 74 points in 68 games.

As soon as he steps on the ice, Luchanko increases the pace of the game two-fold. One second, he’s on the heel of an opponent carrying the puck in the neutral zone, and the next, he’s piercing right through the opposing formation with the puck on his own stick. His speed makes him a retrieval and pressure machine, and his precise position and attention to details, one of the better defensive forwards in the class.

He continued to show the same abilities at the 2024 U18 World Hockey
Championships that effectively brought the scouting season to an end.

“Luchanko has to be Canada’s unsung hero at this tournament, at least amongst skaters,” wrote Elite Prospects OHL scout Lauren Kelly in a May game report. “

- Eliteprospects[Gavin] McKenna, [Porter] Martone, and [Carter] George drew all the well-deserved attention, but Luchanko was far and away Canada’s strongest defensive forward, playing the most out of any player on the team in this game. He had a massive backcheck to cut off Hagens after he was left all alone in the slot after a turnover. Several puck clears and then ate up valuable time in the offensive zone while on the penalty kill. He was just so valuable for this team, even if he wasn’t finding the scoresheet.”

For a time this season, Luchanko’s motor and defensive ability and speed were all our team really saw in him – even when the offence was there. We projected him as a future NHL pressure forward, a bottom-sixer. But his performance over the last few months of the season had us change our upside projection.

Luchanko is a more than capable playmaker. The pace in his game comes from his speed, but also the quickness with which he spots teammates and passes to them in transition. And from the walls of the offensive zone, he’s capable of sending the puck
precisely and deceptively to shooters in the slot. And when the talent around him improved, he made these plays even more regularly at the U18s.

“He made a great pass to Ryder Ritchie in the slot on the fifth goal, and also found Tij Iginla in the slot from behind the net on the sixth goal,” wrote Kelly in an April 2024 report. “If he keeps this up, he’s going to climb up our board for sure - I’m seeing a lot more offensive upside now that he’s playing with better linemates here.”
Luchanko’s shiftiness, awareness, and developing playmaking skills could open up a role for him on an NHL middle-six down the line. It’s more of a long-shot projection, at this stage, but we believe in the centre’s ability to improve and we’re also keeping in mind his August birthday.

He’s one of the youngest players in the draft and probably has more room for development as a result. This was also only his first season in a big role in the OHL. Luchanko’s production should only improve.
