Nick Robertson wants out of Toronto. Might be a guy worth taking a stab at. 23 years old and has had decent production on a team with a lot of big guns ahead of him. Or he might have had decent production because those big guns were ahead of him. Who knows.

Also has the absolute worst birthday in the NHL, bar none.

Something to keep an eye on today is whether some NHL teams structure deals with “deferred compensation.” I’ve heard there’s been more a lot more talk of it this year.

It’s a legal (within the NHL CBA) maneuver that can be used ostensibly to help a player with tax considerations, but the too-complicated-for-me-calculation explanation is that it can also work to reduce the AAV.

It’s done a lot in baseball apparently (Ohtani!).

A player in a high tax jurisdiction, for example, could defer significant amounts of money beyond the playing term of the contract and if, after he stops playing, he moves to a lower-tax jurisdiction, there are significant tax savings on the deferred monies.

It was done many years ago when Shane Doan (now working for TOR) was re-signing with ARI when current TOR GM Brad Treliving was AGM with the Coyotes. The circumstances back then, IIRC, were mostly ARI not wanting to pay out cash in the short term (go figure).

As I understand it, there’s a present-day dollars calculation that is done on the deferred money and that is where, under the right set of circumstances, it could have an influence on the AAV.

Anyway, as I said, something to keep an eye on.

Saw that and it's pretty interesting. Didn't know that was legal under the CBA until today.

Seems unlikely to be used except in the case where there's a UFA who has already made a lot of money in his career, but it'll be interesting to see who goes for it. Still don't think it pulls the high-tax states/provinces competitively-even with the low/no-tax states though.

My understanding is that it allows a player to push back his salary so when he ends his career and moves to a tax friendly state, he’s obviously gaining on the benefit for most of the money. Pretty phucking savvy if you ask me. I guess it’s really the only way for parity amongst the different taxed states/countries.

Yeah but the low-tax state teams can still pay them now instead of making them wait. If you give me the option to get taxed at the same rate now or later, I'm choosing now every time unless that money is going into some sort of account where I can keep the interest also.

I'm saying if you tell me I have the choice between making $5M this year or $5M in 2029...I'm taking it this year every time. $5M today is worth a lot more than $5M in five years. Even if I parked 100% of it in some sort of financial instrument with a meager rate of return it would still be a lot more than $5M five years down the road.

As I noted last night, Pinto's agent Lewis Gross has been looking for an offer sheet from other teams. This would be a natural next step because it's doubtful that will happen. Haven't been any fruitful discussions between the #Sens and Gross in the last two weeks.

My guess is that Skinner goes to a surefire contender for a minimal deal. He's made $100M and played zero playoff games. Wouldn't totally rule it out, but I don't think the Isles are going to be high on his list.
