Huh?
- The Law

I think he means they traded down thinking a specific player or two (potentially Emery) would still be available. When he wasn't they panicked and picked the other kid. I don't necessarily believe this to be true as Wes Clark always goes off the board. Would have liked Solberg a lot though at 23

Oy vey!! Leafs! What a mess! We need to think out of the box, be aggressive! Not happening. Leafs have their core and they make the playoffs and that’s good enough. Utah jersey in my future.

Please make this a promise.

Absolutely.. And if you believe next yrs draft is deeper and better then the trade was smart with the Cats.

As for the pick sure Tre and Berube and Wes can say Danford was their guy all along ... however that doesn't seem to jive with what most believed. They seem to have been caught off guard and settled for a possible top 4 but more likely /5/6 dman when at 23 they could have taken a for sure top 4 guy.

- dozerD10

First of all. Senecke was not in most top 10s so like I said Glass Houses.

Second I like Stolberg but calling him a for sure top 4 is pretty bold.

Tre doesnt have many picks.
Dubas cleaned him out before his departure

- Fakepartofme

Yeah I am sure he tried.

Vegas took the two 3rds over the 2nd. Makes sense.

According to dregs or cj cant remember who, most FA's already know where they are signing

True or not, dont know

- Fakepartofme

Ya, subject to some team throwing a huge offer on the table most of these guys have a short list ...the agents have done their homework ..and the teams know which way things are leaning if not already having a handshake deal in place.

Ya, I know what he meant. He's ignored all the write ups that suggest the Leafs were scouting the Danford kid hard ....much more likely he was always their guy and they knew they could drop and grab him.

And I'm not saying it was good or bad ...just saying it was the choice they made.

You’re right, going off the board seems to be our thing. It looks like it might pay off with the Cowan pick, we’ll see.

I hear he’s the next Pronger.

And Lukas Fischer is pretty close to Lidstrom.

Thompson from Vegas went for two 3rd picks

Tre missed the boat on this one.

- dmnted

Shanahan and his assistant GM Treliving missing every boat.

Leafs management sleeping at the wheel again.

Marino and Thompson could have been solid additions to the team in positions of need.

Even the Hayes deal Dubas swung, not half bad. 3rd line LW/C for 3 million and a 2nd round pick. Like adding 1 more year of Bertuzzi for a discount and a pick for nothing.

Just like all the picks pre-Knies in the 2021 draft are outperforming him.

Top wingers picked in that draft so far:

7th overall Eklund - 97 games and 52 pts
9th overall Guenther - 78 Games - 50 pts
10th overall Boucher - 0 games (haha Ottawa)
13th overall Coronato - 35 games 9 pts
14th Overall Rosen - 7 games and 0 pts

14 other wingers picked before Knies that have minimal games or very few points.

57th overall Knies - 83 games and 36 pts

Eklund and Guenther are both playing on the Sharks and Utah. Way bigger minutes than Knies so I think he's doing just fine. Most GMs passed on him TWICE. So I find it funny when fans are like "he's a FOR SURE pick"

The commentary around Danford made me go look at the last few years. No one was happy when they drafted Cowan and wondered why they hadn't traded down; no one really liked the Minten pick and wondered why they hadn't traded down if they wanted him.

People liked the Knies pick because he was listed as 6'2 / 210lbs.

Very few liked Amirov because they wanted Schneider, Guhle, Lapierre or Zary.

There's a lot of nuttiness in here from a lot of people who know nothing more than what various other guys have spouted. Most of the time after you get out of the top-5 it's a mixed bag. These are guys who all have a lot of skill and it comes down to their personal character and will to take it to the next level.

For instance I don't know much about Solberg. I do know that he comes from a nation that produced one good NHL player in Zuccarello. I know that Solberg - like the rest of the first round - has the tools to be a good player. I don't know much about Danford. A lot of good things have been written about his character and his leadership. If guys like Danford and Cowan are those guys that hate to lose and will do what it takes to win, then the Leafs are making the right choices - but we just won't know for several years.

I thought they had a week, which would be now, that the teams can talk to the players instead of "can't talk until July 1st" type of thing still?

I think most players at the end of the season have an idea if they are coming back or not and where they want to play or what they are after. Zadarov either wants his big payday or wants to be in a different city.

You know it takes two to make a deal right? It's possible Vegas said no to Toronto because they valued where they think Washington picks would end up more. Every pick has a value to a management team and they likely valued where Washington would likely pick more than the Leafs could offer.
