Yes loves trades, but on serious note bringing these veterans creates competition in camp if a young player wants to be on nhl roster then he going to have to earn it, same with some veterans. Brodie was signed to rotate with Murphy that is the only conclusion I can see otherwise don't get the signing.
Just like not taking Hage at 18 then could've traded back into the 1st round with Colorado and took Boisvert. Then would've had Bedard Hage Boisvert down the middle for years to come. I like Boisvert but I think Hage was better option. |

I’m also surprised by the Brodie signing, especially a two year contract, but if it gives the kids an opportunity to further develop, then that’s a good thing. Also, even in his declining stage, he’s still better than Megna, Tinordi, and Zaitsev. Without the aforementioned, they can hopefully reduce Jones TOI to a more reasonable 20-22 minutes a night, which should make him more effective. Defensemen get hurt, they now have more depth. - Angotti
Well i hope when we make the playoffs Brodie plays better for the Blackhawks. Hahaha

I had such low expectations for Zaitsev when the Hawks acquired him - he turned out not to be horrible - just bad - so I was pleasantly surprised. - Chief4Feathers
Ha ha. Actually, I thought he was the better of those three(low bar), but the Hawks along with some here wanted a face puncher, hence Tinordi. If you want a face puncher on the roster, I’d rather it’d be a forward, no reason to play with five defensemen for five minutes plus. |

Well we will find out soon enough if KD can evaluate talent. Part of the deal when drafting is there's going to be misses. But i do agree with KD if you draft talented players who have a tremendous work ethic, I'll take those guys every day over guys who are talented but may not. I saw some highlights of Eiserman playing defense i completely understand why he fell in the draft. |

They are not winning anything this year. Reichel's only just turned 22 and is on a cheap deal. I'd like to at least give the kid another year before he gets booted off the island.
If he clicks you've got a top 6 player.
Right now they aren't going to get much of anything for him anyway so I'm in no rush to trade him...certainly not as some are suggesting because he doesn't fit into the lineup. - HawkintheD

Hard on the puck, I love the way he strips guys of the puck from behind, the way he does that is reminiscent of a certain #81. - paulr

Lucky Chicago looked past Patrick Kane’s inability to play defense, eh?
Typically teams tend to give high scorers allot of slack when it comes to their defensive abilities, or lack thereof. The fact a guy identified as the best goal scorer in the draft dropped so far suggests there’s more than poor defense in the guy’s game. |

Think overall KD did well today.
I question Martinez n Brodie signings .
Don't think we need both but as some have said perhaps Murphy is done. I wonder what defenceman they could have signed for one year 7..75 that they are paying those two.
I would have liked them to use some of that money on a center. Also I like Maroon n Smith but would have rather they traded for Jeannot . Brings toughness n can hit n possiable could have regained some scoring touch he had. I know there may be more to come.
Like I said though I thought KD did good and I am excited for next year. |

Yeah no idea why Brodie was signed? He looked pretty bad for the Leafs last season. But overall I liked the other signings. The team could be knocking on the door to the playoffs next season. |

His possession numbers have fallen off a cliff the last year. Used to be an analytics darling, unless he had a terrible partner I think his game has declined considerably. His Corsi and Fenwick relatives look awful, -10 level bad. Hopefully he gets some easier deployment and can show our younger guys how he used to defend. |

I can't think of a time that has ever happened with a top 10 pick that played in the NHL one whole season and then is sent down.

How many of these guys will be around for a long time? Outside of Teuvo and Bertuzzi, every other deal was two years or less.
One and two-year deals on a bunch of guys who will be better than most of what they let walk in Free Agency, and guys who will have some trade value if they feel like moving on.
I don't think these are big-time sexy moves, but I am also glad they didn't spend a ton of money and lock up anybody to long-term deals. They will be more competitive than last year and still have a ton of flexibility to start inserting their youth into the lineup as they become more ready to do so.
we all know that this roster will be tweaked before opening night. I liked today's moves (based on very limited expectations for next season). |

I also said i will take guys who have a tremendous work ethic, which i believe Kane has, i believe that was one of the knocks against Laine his draft year.
Bedard isn't great defensively but he is constantly working on his game to be the best pro he possibly can be. I'll take that 100 out of 100 times over the guy i think may be a little better but doesn't have the same work ethic. |

The story line on Brodie’s decline sounds alarming and worse yet KD should have realized - right? Well we just have to see how he performs in a different system and we just have to figure he is a relatively cheap veteran if Murphy had issues.
What else to figure? Instead of questioning this move, I will wait and see how Brodie performs. I mean what else do reserve judgment and cursing comes later if warranted |

Scott,
Not going to say that you don't know you just have to accept despite however great Hage is rated. A GM likes and often prefers to go with their guys, guys they like and see slotting into the lineup to offer what they are wanting and needing. Unless the others drafted in the same vicinity of round one are knock out studs worthy of much higher selection, they go with the prospect they are enamorated to add.
I can understand and accept this. |

Considering that most UFAs are 29 or older this makes a lot of sense. |
