Smith taking Kakkos spot you’d figure. Won’t be surprised if Kakko and Trouba are traded together

For one year at $5 mil? Rangers lack picks to begin with and Drury giving two picks for one year if a player who is nothing special. Solid but far from elite. Bad use of assets. Signing Arvidsson for two years at a combined $5 mil would have been the much smarter move

It's quite possible he didn't want to sign with the Rangers!

But the Rangers only have a 3 or 4 year window, in win now mode so getting a Stamkos wouldn't have been a bad idea but who knows what trades he has in the works.

I don’t give a flying (frank) about a 2028 2nd round pick. Once the offseason is complete, we can judge. I truly don’t believe management thinks this is our big move to get us over the top

I am sorry, you don’t give up a second rounder for one year of Smith with no salary retention
- airjan23

You're not wrong, but yeah
2025 - NO 2 3 4
2026 - NO 2 4
2027 (now) - NO 2 4

Also not having the 2nds for the trade deadline sucks too.

Agreed, just saying that would have been the direction I would have tried to go. The one year at $5 million is too high

Can't be upset with Drury for many of these contracts, taking term "silly season" to new heights ( or depths depending on your point of view )...

Watch the Penguins use this newly created cap space and go sign someone good. While we sit here looking at Reilly Smith with thumbs up our butts.

But who’s to say that he wanted to play in NY? Can’t blame the guy for wanting to play with McDavid in his prime. I know you know this, but it’s not a one way street.

Reilly Smith may be past his prime but he's been steady with his impact into his early 30's.

He had his second best 5v5 individual expected goal/60 rate season last year; an indication he can still get in position for chances.

Possible buy-low in terms of shot %, too.

Someone is off his meds and is highly disappointed.

Management knows, duh, why do you think Drury called out the players, but his hands are tied, no cap space, no trade capital.

I’ve never liked Drury, but he just keeps making me hate him more and more

I dont think Smith is a bad idea for you guys, especially with some of the stupid contracts being handed out today. 1 year contract year can bring out the best in some players.

Smith isnt a bad player, just didnt connect here. Some say he was salty about the trade and that rubbed some of his teammates the wrong way, just as many people dispute that though.

A fresh start is good for him.

He was not good last year. Maybe a fresh start helps. Just don’t love giving up a second when they lack picks and the $5 in cap room, that’s my main problem with it.

Smith's name has been thrown around here for like 2 years now, and as soon as it happens he's the worst move they could've made. He's a good player that didn't cost them anything off the roster.

He makes $5M this year and is off the books in time to resign Shesty and Laf. All these other free agent deals are big money for long term which we just can't do, and would be chastised here if they were signed
