4 x 8m - mr.sir
That's a good deal. Takes him to 37 years of age. Depending on how fast/slow his age regression is, that might be his last contract. Or maybe at 37, he pulls a Lidstrom and keeps going for a couple more years. He's worth 8m right now. |

(moving your list out of the quote brackets to make it easier and contextual if you choose to reply)
Blais (history with Berube) <-- I don't know a ton about Blais, but he looks like he plays a heavy style that would suit a 4th line. Strictly a LW. Spends a lot of time in the pressbox.
Comtois <-- I know you've always liked his shot, but I've never really cared for him.
Pearson <-- In his younger years I thought he'd be a 30 goal guy. Never was. Now he scores 5 to 10 and somehow gets $3m for it. He just reminds me of how wrong I am all the time. No thanks!
Cousins <-- Biggest, weakest rat in the league. No (frank)ing thank you.
Addison <-- Overrated, small. I thought he'd be where I thought Liljegren would be!
Atkinson <-- Has the compete level plays, both wings (mostly RW), but God is he small. At 35 I don't know if he gets much more than 10 goals and would be overpaid based on reputation.
Nylander <-- This is the guy I'd want to take a flier on. If he doesn't work in camp with his brother, waive him and send him to next destination. He should be league minimum. It's probably academic because I don't see where his role would fit. If Robertson can't fit in the top 6, I don't see how Alex fits in there.
Sprong <-- Very streaky, but not a bad player. Either wing, probably good for 15 goals if you reduce his PP time to almost nothing. I think he's probably going to get around $2.5m.
Tarasenko <-- Will be too much, but he's a good player just past his prime. If healthy he probably has 25 goals in him and is f'n solid AF and knows Berube.
Motte <-- You have to love his work ethic but probably not his size. Affordable and would add some moxy to a 4th line.
Clutterbuck <-- If he weren't 36 I'd love the idea. Even at 36, guys like Clutterbuck help win playoff games. He'd have to come in at around $1m, but he is from Welland. Who knows?
Pacioretty <-- Hasn't scored more than 5 goals in two years. Maybe he's a Masterston candidate, but at 35 I'd doubt it.
Foote <-- Outside of his ability to reach things on high shelves for me, I don't see a value in him.
Wheeler <-- He's a leader. He can reach higher shelves than Foote. He's also turning 38 in two months and is playing like it. If I want a 4th liner, I want Clutterbuck out of the list.
Gurianov <-- Why does he suck so much? In his first full year with Dallas I thought he was going to be a 30 goal stud. He did score 30 goals, but it took him 4 years to do it.
Vrana <-- When Detroit traded Mantha for this guy, it looked like the Wings were laughing all the way - and then the substance problems and subsequent peformance issues. I don't know if he'll ever find his way back, but at the risk of sounding callous, I don't know if any team that has Cup ambitions should be the place where he finds himself and his game again.
All that typing for me to basically wonder - what does Treliving want here? If it's a 3C, it's none of those guys. If it's to upgrade the 4th line with some energy and some hits, it's probably Clutterbuck. After that I'm not sure if there's anything in there that does it enough.

Pretty much. If this was a hockey city like Toronto, I'd stay off the streets if I was Briesbois.
Tampa might not have original six legacy or the most fans, but the majority of this fanbase is definitely pissed at him right now. I'd throw a milkshake on him. 😆 |

I haven't backread but... how you guys feeling about the Leafs moves? Here's my take.
Tanev will be good on the short term but that's alot of years for a guy that's already 34.
I get the Leafs needed help on defense and OEL did help his reputation in Florida... but I'm not convinced. It could work though. He's obviously an upgrade over some of the Leafs current defensemen.
I liked them bringing Domi last year and I like the contract they just gave him. So long Bertuzzi!
Oh and good job letting the Kings go insanely high on Edmundson and not trying to match that.
Edit: Oh and Solarz is.... ok? Don't think it solves the Leafs goaltending issues if Woll goes down again. Should be a good enough tendem though. |

I think Tre did well with what he had to work with, so I am generally happy. Certainly not Demidov happy. I think the Protz draft pick was good. Kid might have a shot down the road to be a solid physical depth D

Tanev could "retire" or go to Robidas Island in the last couple of years of that contract
OEL should be a significant upgrade to our power play. He can shoot and make teams pay if he gets the room Reilly did. He also seems to be adept at just getting pucks to the net.

Yeah, I thought the man was done after his time in Vancouver but he looked pretty good with Florida. It's not like the cost was exorbitant either.
Tanev will enjoy the sun of Robidas Island one day, until then, he's a good add.

Loved the Habs draft, loved the Slaf signing, honestly a great weekend to be a Habs fan.
Too bad we couldn't convince a Marchesseault or Perron to come a for 2-3 years but I think the Habs will be much more aggressive on UFAs next summer.

Like Tanev..not thrilled about the term. but they needed a difference maker that is elite at defending.
OEL, dont like the 3.5 ..500k too high..but what ev. He did score 9 goals, is decent PP option. they also need more mobile puck moving bottom pairs D, itead of pylons
I like Solarz for what it is. a cheapish option...also murray as a saftey net in case ones gets injured. thats fine imo.
the players that signed that I would have liked the leafs to get..but no cap space is debrusk, Roy and skinner |

He cost $27 mill, a shorter term would have been nothing more than a bigger cap hit. If he doesn’t last like Gio he’ll just be plunked onto the LTIR. |

patience...let the young players develop, no need to tie up the salary cap with bad contracts, Habs still have Anderson and Gallagher Next summer Dvorak, Savard, Armia will all be gone. One more big draft for MTL next summer then I agree with you, they will get help from the young guys they drafted recently, they need to know what they have before they start adding important UFA's |

I understand all that. LTIR is not some get out of contract free card, it does have some implications when trying to accrue cap space.

I like Stolarz. Noting that he was exceptional last year in Florida is one thing, but even in the years before in Anaheim he was providing above average goaltending on a very defensively poor team. I like the idea of peer comparison - especially when you know one goaltender isn't being given the soft assignments (like the Leafs did with Samsonov last year to try and rebuild his confidence).
If you start in 2020 when Stolarz made more than 5 starts for Anaheim (it was only 7), he had a GSAx/game of 0.21, which was better than Gibson's -0.12 and Miller's -0.72.
In 2021 Stolarz again led Anaheim with a postive GSAx/g of 0.18, ahead of Gibson -0.08 and Dostal -0.37.
In 2022 Stolarz added positive value at 0.16 GSAx/g, but Dostal actually passed him at 0.2; Gibson had -0.05, but it was clear that Dostal had passed Stolarz on the team's depth charts.
In 2023 Stolarz went to Florida and in a career high 24 starts had a GSAx of 0.86 compared to Bobrovsky's 0.28. That 0.86 led all qualified goalies in 2023-24.
I made some back comments about OEL - I think if you can pair him with a more physical / defensive style player, similar to a Luke Schenn, you're going to get better results. Most of OEL's shortcomings are around his own net. Is he a $3.5m defender? I don't know, but with a proper support system around him, he should be about where he was for Florida. I think, as an example, OEL would have been much better in a more structured and supported Vancouver system than he had been in the previous two years there.
Obviously I like Tanev. I also think he finishes the deal on LTIR, but if the play of a Chris Tanev is contagious and gets more Leaf defenders playing that way, it probably helps the D. Hakanpaa was 25th in blocks/60 already (surprising note - Liljegren was 22nd) and Tanev was 3rd. Hakanpaa brings size, muscle and hits to the table - 4th in hits delivered, 7th in hits/60. Benoit was 2nd in hits/60 and McCabe was 11th. I think it's important that the Leafs identity changes on the back end to make sure other teams know that it won't be easy to get to the net. This would also insulate Woll and Stolarz and maybe allow them to succeed.
I'm also a big fan of Domi's contract. Love him or hate him, for his skillset $3.75m is an excellent contract.
At the end of the day the Leafs didn't try and move Marner, but will get the chance to move on from Tavares next year (in some capacity). This is Treliving's first remodel of the defense and Berube's first chance to coach the team. There's some toughness, some great defense, improved - or more reliable - goaltending. I wouldn't mind some moxy added into the forward group, but there are too many needs up there and too little cap space (a 2C or 4W would be nice).

The leafs have buried guys on the LTIR enough to let me believe they have all the $ they need to pull off whatever they need.
I’m guessing 4 seasons from him… and even if he lasts the whole contract the cap should be up around $115 mill by his last season which will make his contract damn close to unnoticeable. I’m not worried. |

I think it's a strong possibility, leafs play Marner this year, let him walk, use that money on a Rantanen, if Colorado can't retain him.... if Rantanen re-signs, than one of the other bigger named wingers that make it to free agency.

I am a bit surprised the Leafs didnt put Reaves\Kampf on waivers. Kampf is decent, but not at the cap hit, and Reaves clearly isnt a player they can rely on in the playoffs.
Maybe they are trying to trade one of them in a package? Not sure what trades might be available right now for the Leafs.
Wonder if they might be able to trade for Zegras, Konency, or Buchnevich somehow. |
