Why are the Oilers getting rid of Kane?

EDIT: currently almost 2.5 mill over cap, perhaps

- MattStrat

Cap space (as you saw) and over abundance of LWs maybe we can trade them one of our overabundance of 4th line centers for a LW lol

hahaha one can wish. The Pens still do have over 4 mill cap space and that's before Nieto on LTIR.

Yohe saying we made an offer to tarasenko. Is he still a top 6 option?

I'd be down with this...but think he'll end up elsewhere...

I said that last year about letting Sid decide where he would want to go to pursue another Cup You could get a lot of offers and rebuild instead of just letting him play out a new contract and retire WHY NOT DO IT Do not force him Just ask him what he wants to do Just to remain a lifelong Penguin is just nostalgic Who cares Ray Bourque left Boston Gretz went elsewhere Gordie Howe now Stamkos
Guys like Sid are competitive and want to win Wasting 3 or 4 years here would not be acceptable to me and I ain't Sid Make it a package deal Sid and LeTang and let the offers start NOW

- broncohorvath

After all Sid has done for the Pens, you want to force him out? Sid is in complete control of where he is, that is very clear, and so far he wants to stay. If he changes his mind, they will send him wherever he wants to go. I think Sid has earned the right to decide his own fate (which is what is happening).

There's a few around here that just can't grasp this, man hahah

"He obviously holds an extremely special place here, so it would be foolish for me not to keep in constant contact with him and let him know what we’re thinking,” Dubas said. “As soon as we bring somebody in, we let him know. He reaches right out to the draft picks. He reached out to the guys here today. For me, it’s important for him especially… when we’re going through something a little different than what everyone has been used to since he arrived in 2005, the key is going to be clear communication and being very open about it and transparent. It would be foolish for me not to. That’s what we do. So far, so good.”

Dubas and Sid are communicating probably more than a lot of other GM's communicate with their star players.

I'm assuming Dubas still has a move or two. Probably going to get a top 6 wing. Maybe someone's discard or cheap vet like the already mentioned Terasenko.

Marshall on the fan...

Liked the Lizotte signing. Liked taking a flyer on Beau. Pretty much said what a few of you are saying.... Hoping a couple of these guys play well and can be flipped for assets. Minus Guentz.... "definitely not a better team than last year".

Not ground breaking stuff, but thought I'd post it.

He said a couple of days ago how he LOVES what the Pens are doing in the draft...fwiw.

Edit... Hates the PP. Totally outdated.

I dont think this core has a few years left to make any kind of push. Good chance Sid is still very effective in a few years, I guess. Tanger to lesser extent. Geno seems to have hit the decline this past season...and he's now the Pens oldest player.
- MattStrat

If Blomquist and Yager are 2025 arrivals, and maybe Koivunen shows enough in the AHL, then that season is probably where they get as a good of a youth bump as they are going to get in the near future.

Can the Pens older players keep from declining by then? Realistically they could do that this year so who knows

Yeah he's a big fan of the guys taken in the 2nd round the last few years. Basically all bargain bin, reclamation projects where they are hoping to find their game again on short term deals. The fact that there is no term attached is the positive aspect. I think I heard that right now they are around 30m in cap space for next season but that's without Sid's extension.

Between Yager and the guys we got for guentz... chances just 1 is ready this year? Don't even see a spot for 1 since we are overloaded on 3/4 liners.

Personally I think there is a chance they are better than last year. I think you will see more energy and urgency later in games than we did last season. They really have gotten younger in the forwards. One thing Ive always thought good about Sully is that he is good with younger players and juicing the most out of them....even though he opts to not to dress them a lot in favour of vets hahaha....look what happened last season when the younger guys started getting played a lot more. They went on an awesome run and almost squeaked in. Not as many older dudes to favour now, though.

Now, in saying that, just because I think there's a chance they are better it doesn't mean I think they make playoffs. A number of teams they would mostly like be battling with for WC spots have improved ie Devils and Caps

Tarasenko is a legit option. We would be a good landing spot for him if he can bare the family stuff, which he has so far.

We can pay him more than a contender and then flip him 1/2 retained after juicing his stats on Sids wing. He isn't what he once was but I could at least feel decent about him riding shotgun to Sid.

Yeah, who knows for sure. I don't like the chances of all 3 of them staying super productive for two or three mores season .

Steve Mears leaving the Penguins organization to go call games for Columbus.

Good for him - Id imagine its hard to get sent to the radio call when you were doing TV. One of the nicest men I've met involved with the Penguins.

Personally, I think it's important to get someone Sid can feel good about. Even if it's someone past his prime. I like DOC a lot. Don't think he's a legit top line player.

I have to agree with that one. I think DOC should be on the 3rd line to start the season.

We have to find a taker for Graves and Acciari. I wouldn't trade Eller. I thought he was good for us and a leader in the room.

I'd be happy with Tarasenko (He'd be like a Petr Sykora for us) or Roslovic.

Are Bränstrom, Boqvist still available? I wouldn't rule out PO J yet.

You are absolutely right and that's why I have been so frustrated. Last season was lost on bad coaching. The Pens missed the playoffs by a game having the 3rd worst PP in the league by results, despite having one of the top units by talent level.

Dubas did a bad job last season filling out the roster, but we had some cap space to make a few moves that would have made us no brainers for the playoffs. In a vacuum, all of the guys we got are fine but I just wanted more. Even with this roster, if our PP can rebound under Quinn, we will get into the playoffs.

Still moves to be made. My boys Laine and Provorov are still sitting there in Columbus. Robertson asked for a trade from the Leafs. There is still hope we can take a step forward.

I think Laine makes a lot of sense for the Pens. Young, major finishing talent, right handed shot, excellent on PP and only 2 seasons left on contract. I agree he and Sully might bump heads but if he produces I think that takes a notch off of Sully haha.

I think its possible the Pens are a very respectful top half of the league 5 on 5 team again this season. If, and its a big if, Quinn can get any kind of power play performance upgrade then they will have more standings points.

Make a cap dump trade or 3. Maybe this is what Dubas was waiting for. We trade Acciari and Eller and free up more space while obtaining more draft picks. Then land someone like Lehkonen or Landeskog (j/k). That cap situation is terrible. They were trying to land Jarry at one point which would have made that cap situation even worse!

Yohe's new article has us potentially having DOC as the top LW option. He talks about running it back for a year or 2 while still hoping the players could make a big push. The hope is we get a few good young prospects who could join the team in the next few years and allow us to make one last push for the cup. It is going to take a few years of patience.

- 123Kid

Nate Mac and a 1st for the trouble for a few of our cheap forwards. Sounds fair to me for the cap dump. Nate would love to play with Sid lol
