Buch just signed a long term extension

6 years 8 million AAV

Dream over

Again it's the thing about the salary cap. Might be a bargain but when he's 32/33/34 we gonna be happy with that?

I really wish contract length was capped at like 5 years or something. Would make a lot of this easier. Instead a lot of thought this July IMO has to be "How f'd is this teams cap over the next 5+ years"

Contracts are capped at 8 years for that reason. League wanted to get way from contracts that Kovalchuk, Luongo, Richards, and Hossa got.

With the salary retention option becoming such a big thing, I think GMs really only care about the prime years theyre getting out of a player. So they really only care about the 4 with the NMC, after that, theyre like we might trade you but we will let you have some say so on where. Slap on some retention and it becomes a useable contract again for the next team.

yeah plus I think they're hoping cap goes up more than it's been

CF seems to be pretty in tune with that stuff and it looked like they already had the next offseason at 90m on the cap.

You just have a variable cap based on home state factors. And for usd vs car, very easy to hedge.

It’s extremely doable.

- Bean_Dip

I just think once a variable cap is put in place teams will find loopholes to use to their advantage regardless. How do you quantify that players would rather play for NYR than NYI when the taxes are the same (maybe not local/city taxes but my point stands)? How do you adjust for the fact that players in Toronto will have more endorsement opportunities than those in Winnipeg?

Does "playing near home" factor into players decision making? If so, are caps different in areas where more players consider "home" like Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Minnesota, etc., vs areas like Utah or Nashville where there are very few if any players taking "home town discounts"

I get your argument I just think there are so many variables at play that it's difficult to quantify and level all of them

The Rangers have explored trading captain Jacob Trouba. It hasn’t been easy, and he’s exercising power from his 15-team no trade list.

A core issue: Jacob’s wife, Kelly, is finishing medical residency in NY. This feature on the couple from 2022 explains a lot.

Kaplan quote tweeted her video interviewing Trouba and wife here.

The original trade was a miscalculation by Drury at the time. Continues to resonate given all the issues the team has had at right wing and how seamlessly he fit there. Glad he got a second deal. We will see how the last three years plays out as think the first half of the deal will be done. Bit of cap rises as expected, impact gets blunted a little bit.

I haven't used Puck Pedia, so I don't know if they a similar feature. Would make sense if they started working on one.

Contract comparables to Pavel Buchnevich's 6 year x $8M AAV contract extension:

Jake Guentzel (TBL) 9 x $7M
Brendan Gallagher (MTL) 6 x $6.5M
James van Riemsdyk (PHI) 5 x $7M
Filip Forsberg (NSH) 8 x $8.5M

Jimmy ---

I would rather you remain here posting occasionally when you're calm than getting banned. Keep your cool and stick around. I know why you're upset, but stop pouring gasoline on the fire --- you're gonna get burned!

If you make it an anchored variable cap, meaning you have a certain # that acts as your anchor and then its variable dependent on various tax and currency implications, it makes it even. That’s just strictly a cap idea.

And all the other variables you mentioned are already a factor, but they’re not loopholes in cap rules. That’s just life. I can promise you this, if Utah or CBJ got really good and were on the cusp of winning the cup, players would sign there because that should be a players ultimate goal.

You and I both know that the day after you get banned, the Rangers are going to make a big trade/signing and you will be unable to contribute. Keep your powder dry and stay cool my friend!
