Depends on how you use him. If he was with Matthews and Marner, the defense part wouldn't have mattered so much if he's scoring 40 goals.

Just the same way you wouldn't expect a shutdown player to score goals, you wouldn't use Skinner to kill penalties or block shots.

Don’t do that to Papi - he’s already responsible for Mitch’s Mmmmarvellous Mmmuffins

He can’t look after 2 wingers defensively

Since you love cherry picking so much, he was 57% last year with the NJD.

But unlike you I didn't lie. Have you run upstairs yet and asked your mom if she thinks 5 out of 9 qualifies as regularly?

Oh I know - but Willy carries the puck and has it on his stick a lot also….and those numbers are way too high for a winger who doesn’t score that often to have…especially when folks think he’s good 5v5 defensively. Great PK player. PK is a completely different game structurally, pace, positionally, responsibilities from the defensive side.
- Big23Questions

Just a question that occurred to me - when a player clears the puck down the ice on a PK, is that scored as a giveaway or no because it's a positive play even though you are giving it to the other team?

No GA

EDIT: but it is a giveaway if for instance when Leafs are on a PP and Mitch gives it away on the wall in Ozone as he does. That’s a giveaway

Must be why Marner got all those Selke votes for all those years. All Matthews.

Of course Nylander, being the defensive brick wall that he is has how many Selke votes again?

Honest question because I stopped following him and Dvorak a few years ago since they appeared to be pretty medicocre.

Why has Tierney averaged 53 games per year the last 4 years? Injury? Healthy scratch? Both?

Also why has he not been good enough to play more than 4th line minutes for non playoff teams since 2018?

All those votes all those years? Nope. Reporters liked him and decided to nominate him. Reporters.

Most of the time if you look at Giveaways you should look at 5v5 anyway. Your assessment is right, though. They play a very different style of game and the players around them play a different style of game. Because Mitch is a trusted high risk/high reward passer who is often successful, when he gets the puck in the D-zone his forwards (and often Rielly) fly the zone and hope for a long-bomb pass.

When Willy gets the puck in the D-Zone, he gets accompaniers and trailers, because he'll carry the puck. It's how they play.

Marner's entire style is prone to giveaways. He is also a cross-crease wizard but everyone knows it, so it does get picked off a lot - but when it's successful it's very lethal because of the shooters on the team.

I would like to see him learn to dance more when it's obvious he's desperate to get that cross-crease pass through. They're going to take away the middle - so take the lane to the net and just make it happen or shoot for a rebound from in tight. There are other ways to be magical without that cross-crease pass.

5'8 35 year old Atkinson is probably not moving the needle enough with his 12 goals to make Tampa that much better.

My issue with this is that he’s not a wizard. He’s predictable now at this stage in his career. He still makes unreal passes once every couple games but the problem is that when he’s on a team that doesn’t play good team defensive and is thin upfront on responsible forwards - there are games where he becomes a liability on that side of the game.

He tried his Jr passes and they get picked. He is a machine at giveaways on the PP some nights man. He is constantly outmuscled along the wall and frankly everywhere on the ice. But man do they look pretty when they work (his passes). They are fantastic and those plays can’t be made by most in the league kinda good.

Mitch is too soft and shy to change up his game. He won’t ‘dance’ cause he’ll get lit up sometimes and he’s not prepared to have that happen. He goes away in games when time and space are limited and or versus physical teams with tough dmen. He gets rid of the puck in a risky way and generally looks scared.

High Risk/ High Reward never goes with the description of a true Selke worthy hockey player. Smart distribution and puck manage my does. Mitch does not have that on his side.

End of the day I forget who said it in here but very apt: nobody has ever changed another’s mind in here and they are just opinions and the way we see the game. (Paraphrase obviously)

He should because he has a better shooting % than Willy, and puts himself in better spots to score than Willy does.
