Matthews also benefits from playing with marner
It works both ways.

One rough playoff series and the marner whiners go nuts.
Marner was great last playoffs series against tampa. Both him and Matthews

- Fakepartofme

Again, its not so much about Marner but that these players dont win together. Thats a fact. Marner is the one who shrinks
the most and his contract is up.

Ya Matthews is great in the reg season.
As youve stated before, the cap with be at $120 soon enough, 12.5m per is around 10% of the cap.

But as ive said before, pay him willies salary or 11.6 to appease his dad

Willie hit his peak
Marner had a bad year, played less games and equalled or outpaced wille at ppg.

- Fakepartofme

Using Monkey's advanced stats. Willy and Mitch both better with Matthews the last 2 years. While Matthews actually better without them. So huge advantage Mitch getting to spend most of his time with Matthews.

I dont believe in 8 yrs of bad luck. We're the Senators or the Sharks.

You may hate the comparison but it was the Caps' 13th season after drafting Ovechkin.

I don't like how long it's taken to see ANY progress, I don't like the lack of progress or deeper playoff experience, just like everyone here.

I think I like what they've done with the D this year. I'm not that concerned about the loss of Bertuzzi, but I do believe that they still need to at least add a 3C. I wish they could upgrade 2C and move Tavares to LW but the cap is still a thing.

I saw your comments earlier about the goaltending, but Woll was our best goalie last year. I'm as concerned as anyone about his health, but Stolarz has been a very, very effective goalie. Matt Murray, if healthy, is a better insurance policy at #3 over Martin Jones.

Is it a cup team? I doubt it but I don't know. Colorado was soft until they weren't. Edmonton was soft until they weren't and now they're favourites. They have to find that right blend of toughness and skill and then get their skill players to play through the hard moments.

Just don’t care too.

I don’t like anything that isn’t real, y’know?

I detest superhero movies.

I like the outdoors, science, history.. that sort of thing.

I get it. Im fine with trading them all.

But these players cant score in the playoffs, imagine they no longer have a 99pt player in the line up, they may score less

Up until these playoffs marner led them in playoff points. He also was one of the main reasons they beat tampa last year (him matthews and morgan)

If this happens he’ll walk for nothing.

it's not a physical identity
just $$ to play with

Ya those games don’t substitute for the real thing I find lol.

I’ve tried multiple time getting into gaming, and each time after a short period I realize it’s not for me. To each their own.

All this arguing about our two best wingers got me thinking. I couldn't remember a single player putting up numbers like that on the Habs in forever. I looked it up and its been over 30 years since the Montreal Canadiens have had a 40 goal scorer and almost 40 years since they've had a player score 99 or more points. I don't really have a point to this post but that's pretty wild IMO

It would be just as well without him, and Monkey's stats strongly suggests that is not the case. Same for Nylander. Both are better with him.
- jribout

Both are better with him, but if you look at the numbers closely you'll see that the defensive numbers are always better with Matthews and Marner. The Leafs are worse without either of them on the ice, but when Nylander is out there without Matthews the team is typically negative at 5v5.

Matthews is the best player this team has ever had and there's no denying that - or shouldn't be. But when I look at all numbers with and without players and everything else, I think that Marner may very well be #2.

The current hate on Marner just feels like if Chicago fans attacked Patrick Kane because he was pushed around by bigger guys. It didn't happen because Bickell or Byfuglien or Brouwer would have removed their spines through their noses. The Leafs have done (frank) all to protect Marner.

Nice. That's so cool. One of my buddy's did the same with his 2 boys. I was gonna get mine by now, but my buddy who's helping me build it said to wait a bit. New poops coming out in the next few months and the prices of other things will drop, apparently. So I'm taking his word for it, because why not.

Nothing that I play currently would be overly taxing on a PC (mostly just FPS's, Skyrim, and Palworld at the moment), but I plan on playing a bunch more games once I get it. Elden Ring likely the first game I'll be getting.

For sure. I love fishing but apparently I'm the worst in the world at it.

Yup, for sure. For me, it not being real is probably why I love gaming so much. But I understand it's not for everyone.

I'm thinking a dual monitor setup. I probably don't need it, but I feel like being a little extra with it.

I already got a desk, so I just need the actual computer itself, monitors, and a chair.

I've got a TV with my Xbox on the desk right now, and it looks kinda stupid. Will look a lot better with monitors there, instead.

Look if this really happens and Mitch is really a no-show in the playoffs then I'm sure no one will be all that sad when he leaves and between him and Tavares give us $22m in capspace.

Let's play the games.

- Monkeypunk

8 previous tries leads me to believe he will yet again not be there when it counts. I said the same thing about cap gains but the issue with that is you need to have ufas that fit the holes of the team and they also need to want to play for you.

I can’t repeating myself with the whole Marner and Matthews thing - 34 scored with anyone.

Marner got all his points in 2 games vs Tbay that year I believe or almost all - then went away as series went on and the vs fla

Again I won’t change my mind on trading one the wingers and that Marner is the best choice. No use trying eh

12.5 or he walks.

He’ll get that loot. Mark my words

- Horsey Sauce

If he does go the route of free agency, he will maybe even get more than 12.5. There are teams that do not have any offence that need it point is the leaves have offense, especially from a winger and don’t need another one that plays the same way

So why are the Leafs' team failures being laid at Marner's feet and not Matthews' or Nylander's or Rielly's or Tavares'?

The biggest problem, in my opinion, is Captain Milquetoast makes $11m and doesn't do a goddamned thing to contribute, lead by example, or lead. I'm sincerely not even sure that the guys on the team really like him all that much. They all seemed to like Jumbo, Simmonds or Marleau more and they were only here for 2 years.

Marner is an easy scapegoat because he had a terrible playoffs this year, has generally performed poorly in elimination games (he's not alone here), is visibly affected by the Media and spotlight, has the puck on his stick a lot which obviously leads to some glaring giveaways and mistakes, and is viewed as having bent Dubas over for every penny he could get on his last contract (who didn't?). Some warranted, some not. At the end of the day you can't argue he isn't one of the best players to ever play for the blue and white though.

I have no clue how anyone points to single player for any teams faults or lack of success.

Matthews makes his impacts in playoffs. When he’s not scoring he creates room for other players by drawing coverage. As a centre he is almost impeccable defensively. He contributes that way. When he’s on th ice he’s a threat and noticeable.

I am not a Reilly guy. He was awesome the playoffs before last and not bad ones before. I don’t think he’s a true #1 dman but he is a top pairing dman.

JT I agree. I like him as a 2C up until this year and would be a great 3C or 2LW at a cheaper next deal as this year could’ve been an odd one…but playoffs he doesn’t inspire with his play when push comes to pull and I like my captains to do that.

I think a lot of folks just see Marner as the guy to move if at all possible. He was overpaid last deal and as a result will want too much next deal and he doesn’t perform playoffs. Willy scores and is cheaper and to my other points - 34 doesn’t rely on Mitch to score. He’s just the logical guy to move as JT is better I think than he showed last year and will likely be willing to sign a cheaper deal to stay in Toronto with his family and again be a great 3C or 2W.
