I know this is also hard to understand but the issue is less about his desire to re-sign and more aout the ability to fill out a competent team around him and McDavid. If, as anticipated, the two of them are re-sign for an estimated $28 - $30 million, you're left with Bouchard, who is also expected to earn ~$10 million. You already have Nurse making $9.25, which I won't even comment on, and Skinner needing a contract that will also likely end up around $8 mil. Add all of those up - you're pushing $60 million for 5 players. Even if the cap magically reaches $100 million in 2 years, how is Edmonton going to field 18 more (decent) players with $40 million to spare.
Edmonton would almost certainly be guaranteed a cup by trading Draisaitl to fill the gaps. To me, that's a bit easier to understand. - ScaleyMcSlither
Oh boy. Where to begin. McDavid and Draisaitl already make $21M. So let's say that rises to $30M to take your extreme example. Let's see...Evander Kane will be off the books, so his $5.1M gets replaced with an ELC. So that's where $4M comes from. Kulak's $2.75M expires and gets replaced by an ELC or another vet taking a discount. The dead cap amount is going down . The cap is rising. Lots of ways to make it work.
As I said, McDavid and Draisaitl have both agreed to extensions but will go through the charade. Both will take modest discounts. So maybe it's $28M and not $30M. They will find the right balance. So Bouchard will take a discount, and Skinner will never come close to $8M. Watch and see.

I agree on Skinner, he'll likely need to be a Vezina finalist the next couple seasons to get 8 million. No knock on Skinner, he obviously showed he's capable of getting deep into the playoffs (as deep as you can get) but I don't think he's at the Vezina finalist level. Nurse is obviously the big rock, he's making elite D money (more than Makar, Heiskanen, Josi, Pietrangelo) and seems to barely be a 2nd pair D. |

A guarantee of a Cup? Seriously. In most cases when you trade a player like Draisaitl, you normally lose that trade. - MJL
There were sooooooooo many options, and the Oilers pi55ed this asset away.
Point, Sergachev and Vasilevsky
Barkov straight up (and maybe throw in Bobrovsky)
Ullmark, Debrusk, Carlo, + +
Chycrun, Stutzle, Batherson
Anderson, Guhle, Montembeault ++
Laine, Jenner, Provorov, Elvis
Cozens, Power, +
Horvat, Dobson, Varlamov
Couturier, Sanheim, maybe Provorov
I completely agree that they should have shopped Draisaitl when they had the chance. Now, the chance is probably gone and he'll walk for nothing...or worse...HE STAYS for big bucks.
This is a selfish player, he'll do what is best for him and him only, guaranteed.

Where are you getting this from? Out of thin air? Just looking at the first deal, TB wouldn't make that. LOL

He’s probably a top three forward in the entire NHL, McDavid/MacKinnon/Draisaitl, he’d look good in the Eastern Conference. |

You're crazy. Top 5 player in the NHL and a prolific playoff performer. Also, you still positive Drai walks? I offered to bet you $100 he re-signs but you never responded. |

Sorry, I missed your post I guess. I would take the bet but how do we do it (betting with strangers)? Also, it's kind of a negative thing to bet on him leaving, I just think it will happen, not necessarily "hoping" that he'll leave.
A motivated, moving his feet Draisaitl at $10M to $11M is great!
A lackadaisical, slow, flying the zone, and not backchecking Draisaitl at $14M is a disaster.
You can just publicly shame me when he resigns for a home discount $10m! lol

The list of potential trades that you made that the Oilers missed out on was for the most part, absurd.

yes, as you've said, I literally pulled it out of thin air, just trying to point out some possible foundations for past trades (adding or subtracting picks and prospects as necessary to even things out). |

You wouldn't have listened to a Draisaitl, prospect, picks for Couturier, Sanheim, prospect picks type of deal? okay |

I guess you're unaware that there are two parties in a trade. Both sides have to agree to complete a trade. From the Flyers perspective, yea but Edmonton would laugh at that return. I think you should stay out of the prospective trade game. Not your strong suit.
