Pretty sure JT was 33rd in points for a center and Top 5 in faceoffs and solid defensivly. Is he worth the contract no, is he a liability on the ice.. no..
He is a 2nd line center on most teams - Azuredoom
I meant weak link as in being on the hot seat. He is playing out his last year and it looks like Marner is staying.....maybe. So, JT is gonna end up being the sacrificial lamb out of the Core 4.

I will be too, if OEL, Tanev and Hawkentuah all play most of the season and they find a 3C who can slide up to 2C in the event JT gets slower this year. |

Washington is way over the cap. Get Strome and have them retain $800k. It's the draft-fecta. We have Marner who was #4, get Strome who was #3, then go get Eichel who was #2 - and then McDavid will feel that he should just come here. - Monkeypunk
I'd do that. He was probably Washington's best player last season, even if that was a pretty low bar.
But I like him and he'd be a pretty good 3C sub-in 2C. |

He will resign at a lower number and be the 3rd line center for a few years. When he signed people said the end of his contract would be bad and it is not great but the Leafs just signed a bunch of guys whose contracts will not look great in a few years.
Agree that it looks like the Leafs will run it back and we will live through another year of disappointment.

I wouldn't mind that. There has to be a middle ground between overpaying a declining franchise star and ruthlessly running them out of town like Briesbois did to Stamkos. Give JT a short term contract to retire on and then give him a job in the front office.

If he wants Stamkos money, he will be.
5-6million per, he probably wont be.
Although if when/he resigns that may be when they move the C to someone else....if they want to do that. |

True, we were hoping we'd have a cup or at least get to the 3rd round a few times by now, not just 6 first round exits and one win in the second round. LOL.
In about 2 years most of the contracts handed out this year will not be looking good. |

Even I don't hate the Leafs enough to wish them a season of Mike Hoffman or Kubalik.
Stay way. All of the negative takes in here on these players are accurate. Hoffman is basically wearing the opposing team's jersey while he's on the ice and Kubalik benefitted from the perfect scenario for his rookie success. Sorta like Colin White playing with Mark Stone and Matt Duchene. A beer leaguer would look good with those line mates. |

all I see when I read Kubalik name is that goal he scored on the Leafs, batting it out of the air.

I'm not super concerned about those - although maybe I should be more concerned. Tanev, OEL and Dimi are the three contracts which exceed 2 years in length.
Tanev is, obviously, the most concerning - he'll be 36 in the third year and there will be 3 years to go after that. Because he's such a warrior in his style, I think he can be effective until he's 36/37 - but slowly breaking down - more and more injuries and fewer and fewer games until LTIR is probably his exit strategy. The difference between his game and Brodie's is that Brodie didn't like to engage the body nor play the puck and relied on his stick - you slow down just a tick and that extra inch you're giving up is the difference between missing a stick check and executing it - and let's face it - missing a stick check and not having any body position makes you look terrible.
Tanev plays a little smarter, cutting the angles, getting body position and being in front of the puck. It's a style that _may_ allow him continue to be effective even as he slows down.
OEL is probably great as a third pair guy, but I don't like his cap hit if all he's doing is playing 13-14 minutes / game in a 5v5 role and then popping out on PP1. I had read that one of his larger problems is that he doesn't have a particularly strong stride leading him to take smaller steps which is slower and allows him to be beaten defensively. He's 32, so I mean if he's working on it - great - but it's likely old habits and all. He's never been great defensively, but he does control the puck offensively. I like him a lot more than Klingberg, so I guess there's that. Who will he be at age 35? It's a good question. He's probably the worst contract of the bunch - just because of how we'd expect Tanev's will go.
Domi - and I already said it before - I have no concerns with that deal whatsoever. He's a good skater, he has good instincts for the net, and if he is given a more prominent offensive role, I think he'll rise to the occasion moreso yet. He is 29, so you probably do start to see some decline in his game after next year, but I do believe it will be incremental enough that we won't really notice it in those final 2 years of his deal.

I wouldn't keep Jarnkrok if moving his salary allowed the team to sign 3 guys like; Comtois, Tierney and Clutterbuck for roughly the same salary.
I'd value that 3rd/4th line much more than just one Jarnkrok. Big, physical, defensively sound PKers who play with determination and passion.
I was on the same train of thought on Jarnkrok in previous years but I really think his time is up in Toronto and he hasn't shown he has that playoff bite that we need to be successful. His playoff numbers are actually rather pathetic in 90+ playoff games. - Rare_Jewel

I totally forgot about Domi's contract, I'm sure in 2 years he will be a non factor on the team, but at 3.75 it wont be a huge deal. I was more referring to the Tanev, OEL, Willie while also thinking about the upcoming overpayment for Marner |
