Being small is okay in many ways - it's about heart and courage. A Brendan Gallagher or a Darcy Tucker style would be nice. They weren't big but they did what it took to win. I think it's the smaller guys who just give up on plays that bother me the most. Martin St. Louis never gave up on plays.

Cowan is 1 inch shorter than Marner but 5lbs heavier (and only 19yrs old), he will be ok at 5'11" and 180 (should play at the NHL level closer to 190)
- Symba007

Marner doesnt hit and hes very good at avoiding them. Cannot compare

Most likely Cowan will be useless but if he's not, cool.

Yeah he looks pretty small and weak compared to the NHL average.

Marner does not have ideal NHL size. And everybody complains about how Marner is soft, weak, small etc. There is however a big difference between Marner and Cowan in terms of skill level. Marner overcomes it by producing more assists and points than 95% of the league. Don't see Cowan doing that. Not saying it's impossible but very unlikely.

There are 700+ NHL players. Very, very few of them survive being 5'10" or less. I think only 40ish players played 50 or more games being that size. It's a very tough road.

He's probably the first guy to tell his boss to (frank) off and go somewhere else.

Right?

It's not impossible but certainly a lot more difficult.

You take two players equally motivated but one is 6'4, 220 and the other is 5'10", 180 and they both go into a corner in the playoffs. There's only so much motivation that smaller player can have to overcome that type of difference, night after night, year after year.

That's why there are weight classes in boxing and MMA. It's an obvious, usually insurmountable advantage if both players are equally trained and motivated, which, they usually are.

Nobody listened before it crossed over into "relentless", so does it ever really matter?

He had every reason to.

Got traded to the Rangers and helped them reach the Stanley Cup final. Not too shabby.

I was curious, so I ran the numbers.

52 last year.

And that's out of 552 players last year who played 50 or more games.

So let's say 1 in 11.

From last blog:

So now all the talking heads who love to poop all over the Leafs will be saying how great the drafting in Toronto has been for the past years and how stupid the Leafs are for letting Wes Clark go to Pittsburgh - it is the Leafy way. lol

- Cush29

He has made some decent drafts, but honestly, its not like he has hit home runs yet. There are many other orgs that have drafted far better. I never got why the Leafs just didnt go buy the best scouts from all the other orgs lol.

Because his own GM didn't vouch for him despite him being much better than a guy like Patrick Marleau.

Didn't he just win the Art Ross trophy the year before or something like that?

As I said, I don't blame him for telling Yzerman to (frank) off.

Canada won, all is good for fans like you and I. But from his standpoint, I get it.

Yep and the garbage article from the Star is talking about "gems" that he drafted - not a single one of them has played a (frank)ing NHL game yet.

Toronto sports media loves to hate the Leafs.

You know how everyone knows your full of poop?

Your comparing what Marner has done in the NHL to Cowan who has yet to play a game in the NHL and proclaiming that Cowan won't be able to do it.

Try doing everyone a favour and STFU.

I do notice the hot take that you can't win with a 10 million dollar player has gone quiet with no revision
