The hockeybuzz filter is one of the main reason I'm glad the Habs didn't draft Richardenson.

Because i'd have to get banned every time talking about him by going around the filter.

He’s had 3 drafts as head of amateur scouting. His earliest picks were #28 (Cowan), 31 (Danford) and 38 (Minten). He also picked up Hildeby at 122. Minten just turned 20 last week. What exactly were you expecting?

In some catch weight fights I've seen the bigger guy just get on top and pound the living bejesus out of the smaller guy. Or even at the heavyweight class - like I remember when Lesnar outweighed Mir by 20 pounds and it really showed in the ground game. I know Mir submitted him the first time they met, but Lesnar was still pretty new to MMA at the time.

That all said - and staying on topic - if you break down the NHL among guys who played more than 20 games last year:

721 players played more than 20 games. 35% of these players were defensemen.

141 of them were under 6 feet tall; 31 (22%) were defenseman.
124 were "exactly" 6 feet tall; 37 (30%) were defensemen.
456 were over 6 feet tall; 184 (40%) were defensemen.

Forwards under 6ft tall averaged 41.9pts / 82; Defense averaged 27.2
Forwards at 6ft tall averaged 41.1pts / 82; Defense averaged 29.8
Forwards over 6ft tall averaged 38.4pts / 82; Defense averaged 25.8

So it's a tougher road if you're a smaller guy for sure, but if you're in that mix, you are, on average, a better point producer.

Very interesting.

Elite players usually have control of the puck. What do you want them to do, dump and chase?

Ya of course man - that's puck. If you're undersized you better produce. Scouts always lean towards bigger players and unless you stand out offensively you get overlooked even if its close.

The guys that are smaller and play like Tucker is an exception. Super rare and virtually non existent now.

One day a week, I work at my dad’s house.

It happens to be on the day I have the one-hour, listen to others drone on conference call.

I say hello to everyone at the start, then put on the headphones and head out the door - I head into the ravine that backs onto my golf course and hunt for errant golf balls from the 11th and 12th holes.

I typically bag 40-60 balls, with the vast majority being quality balls. Lots of ProV1s.

Everyone else hates the weekly “all hands on deck” conference call, but I franking love it.

Yep. Matthews plays a physical game by way of his size in puck battles and in own end out muscling....Some more hits would still be nice though. The other 2 are just terrified.

Yes they should finish their checks while the other team is going the other way with the puck.

Actually average size in the NHL has been decreasing in the last decade.

Clutch and grab hockey is dead. Size isn’t as important now.

That article is from 2018. Ray Ferraro was saying after the SCF that "big wins" and that the last few Stanley Cups are skewing back to "size matters".

You know what that is a good point. I suppose I was thinking of in the past. It is a super soft league now. Not Marner Willy soft (thats just over the top) but softer.

In terms of drafting and such though I agree with Dozzer....Success as team build/roster composition - i will always say it matters absolutely.

Where’s his actual broken down points?

Average size these days isn’t very big, 6’-1” @ 199lbs

Panthers: 6’-2” @ 201lbs

And that’s average, meaning there is someone smaller for each player they have who’s bigger. Players aren’t as big as they used to be.

See the Panthers.

You can finish a (frank)ing check on time and not be out of position Shack.

Why is it always black and white with you guys or some other just complete bullpoop excuse for the Leafs sucking.

Florida killed Edmonton on exactly that. They had a two-man, hard-hitting forecheck that completely (frank)ed up the D and made the forwards come back deeper to help get the puck out. The 3 games Panthers lost they stopped doing that as well as they did in the first 3 games but still ultimately won. It works.

Physical play is dwindling. They’re trying to make the game something that gains more attention in the states. Gritty, dirty, physical play isn’t the way to do it.

I disagree.

If one country on this planet needs hits and fights to be entertained, its this poophole I live in, the U.S.mutheffingA.

You want to get the ratings up in the US, especially the southern states where there are not many teams....bring back fighting and hip checks.

poop half of them still watch roller derby when the WWE and UFA aren't on.

I agree...but always find it funny when you watch games in the states - they get up for goals, but they get crazy for hits and fights. Physicality and speed (in combo as well) is what separates hockey from other sports.

Fans love the hits and fights. The tiny american (Gary) didn't like all the puffs criticizing the games injuries and rough stuff so like a businessman (which is what he should do) he shifted the product so the softy types in the media didn't continuously write articles of how bad fighting is in hockey and how violence on the ice is disgusting.

Actually I think McDavid and Draisaitl both being banged up had more to do with it than anything the panthers did.
