I don't think physical play is dwindling, it's just changing form. Defense plays tighter gaps, there's more backchecking, everybody is FAST and there's way less separation physically on the ice than there used to be.

The result is a lot more grinding, a lot fewer big booming hits.

Reach is more important than just being physically larger than somebody else. Reach is king.

- BINGO!

You’re absolutely right about reach. It’s so important for defending. Reilly uses a short stick and so does Matthews, hence they are useless killing penalties.

The drug did win a nobel prize.
It was awarded to two scientist for their discoveries involving the drug

- Fakepartofme

I never took the jab.

Instead, I read the works of Svetlana Alexievich, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature the same year that William C. Campbell and Satoshi Ōmura won the Novel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for for their discoveries concerning a novel therapy against infections caused by roundworm parasites.

Because neither of them has anything to do with viruses, so if you are going to be braindead stupid enough to think that winning a Nobel Prize in something completely unrelated has any relevance, I’d rather read interesting poop than ingest horse dewormer.

And other than football, which has very controlled physical play, the next two more popular than hockey are baseball and basketball with zero amounts of physical play. Soccer is taking off more and more there as well.

The NHL wants those sports fans… not the wrestling/fighting types

Hockey is too fast of a sport for a lot of 'Muricans to even understand. That's part of the reason they love poopty sports like Basketball and Football.

It's slow enough that they can understand what's happening.

Speed and reach…. A lot of big players aren’t great puck handlers hence why you’re not seeing the giants as much anymore. A good reach doesn’t mean much if the guy is routinely outskated.

Yeah, I read an article a long time ago by Al Strachan of all people, who used to be a good hockey writer.

His hypothesis was that the game wasn’t watered down by more teams - the talent level has never been higher.

Games are dull because there is now an absence of talent disparity - the worst guys on the ice are no longer terrible.

The worst guys don’t make as many mistakes anymore.

The best guys can’t outclass the worst guys as much anymore.

And the worst guys now know how to make safe plays.

It’s the same with hitting -these guys are so overcoached, nobody skates across the blueline with heir head down, or in the neutral zone in the trolley tracks. It’s been coached out of them since they were 12.

That and they get to grow up playing it for free. Football covered by schools and basketball by owning a ball and heading to the court.

Hockey’s biggest downfall is the expense of getting a child to play it.

Sadly there are skaters who need it free as well.

Hockey has only about 40% of the Canadian population as fans. Willing to bet that number would be bigger if there wasn’t numerous families who simply can’t afford it or down to having a parent(s) working at times where they can’t get their kid to practices/games because the kid is under a babysitter at that time.

Hockey is too similar to golf when it comes to the price of enjoying being able to play.

Absolutely.

Soccer is the simplest sport there is, but to just play it for fun, all you need is a ball. Wanna playing in a league? Get shoes and shin guards.

The requirements for some sports is so low, it just works perfectly in it's favour.

Canada dominated in hockey for so long because because of the number of people who could play it. With a cold climate, kids could play it here.

In soccer a lot of poor countries were good because it doesn’t take much money to play.

But now coaching plays a huge role in sports, so wealthier countries are starting to dominate in all sports. Honestly, we should give soccer to poor countries and just be happy with hockey.

Right. The game for defensemen has gotten simpler in some aspects and harder in others. Lots of teams now just use D to direct traffic while the forwards do the heavy lifting defensively.

As a kids sport, there is not much cheaper than golf. A kids membership to a golf course is a fraction of what it costs to play any sort of rep sport.

Hockey has gotta be up there with skiing and cycling as the sports that can get spencer for hire quickly.

I think I spent 500 bucks on skates, a helmet and three wooden sticks just to play shinny ffs. Then of course I needed a Leafs jersey.

Or I can tell you skateboarding is expensive because the boards and clothes are consumed rapidly if you're skating all the time. I washed a lot of dishes to skate. Like a lot.
