Tanevs last 3 years games missed,....2, 17, 0 - drexel
He's always been injury prone in the past and his style leads to injuries as he ages. Hits, blocked shots, diving to make defensive plays etc. all increase the likelihood of injuries. He's been relatively healthy the past 3 years but the first 10 years of his NHL career was nothing like that. |

Do you actually have memory loss or do you intentionally say the same stupid poop every day after being proven wrong? Honest question.
Pesce was NEVER an option, seeing as how he signed in NJ to be close to home, and it was done weeks before Free Agency even opened. - GreatGigInTheSky
Are you capable of just talking hockey without melting down with childish insults or is it too difficult for you to deal with somebody having a different point of view and ideas than you? Honest questions.
The "home town" story is cute after the deal is done for PR reasons but if the Leafs acquired his rights (like they did with Tanev) and offered him an 8 year deal with a huge signing bonus, I think he gives the Leafs a lot of consideration. Bigger up front cash, longer term deal and joins a playoff team with a legit MVP (Team USA teammate) on the team.
The Devils only gave 5 million as a signing bonus. Then 4 million. Then 2 million. So basically 11 million (33%) up front over the first 3 years. Leafs could have given him a lot more than that in the first 3 years of his contract. Maybe, 10, 8, 6 and 50% of the total within the first three years? Not sure what the exact rules are but pretty sure it's more than what the Devils gave him up front.
8 x 6 AAV would have been 48 million (instead of 33 over 6) with half of the total up front in signing bonus cash. Leafs would have had a better top pair RHD with a reasonable cap hit. Could have still signed Tanev to his deal and had a proper top pair and 2nd pair RHD. Trade Liljegren, trade McCabe, don't sign Hakanpaa. Cap hit would have been pretty much the same (3+2+1.5). Actually saved 500K.
Rielly / Pesce
OEL / Tanev
Benoit / UFA RHD (or trade Liljegren / McCabe to SJS for Rutta or something)
He's 29 so an 8 year deal would bring him to 37. If they were okay with having Tanev signed until he's 40, that kind of commitment wouldn't have been that much different for a superior player.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Spit balling here...
Looking ahead to next year...it could have been...
When Tavares is off the books, it gives the Leafs a lot of money to sign another top-4 / 2 D and would have given the Leafs an actually scary blueline for the first time in a very, very long time.
Chychrun or Theordore (8-10? AAV UFA) / Pesce (6 AAV)
Rielly (7 AAV) / Tanev (4.5 AAV)
OEL (3.5 AAV) / UFA RHD
Benoit
Alternatively, the Leafs have to hope Ekblad wants to "come home" next year and maybe they can sign him as the top pair RHD. Maybe bring in Larsson as a UFA to pair with OEL?
Not as good as other scenarios but still an improvement.
Rielly (7 AAV) / Ekblad (7.5? AAV)
Benoit (1.4 AAV) / Tanev (4.5 AAV)
OEL (3.5 AAV) / Larsson (4? AAV) |

I've responded to you, maybe 3 times now. And this is the first time I've flatout called you an idiot, because what you said was, indeed, idiotic.
There's is no world where there is a "different point of view" to discuss. You are factually wrong about something you continue to insist the team should have done and the reason for why it didn't happen.
If they traded for his rights, they would've wasted an asset (of which they have few) in the same vein as when Buffalo tried to get a jump on Vesey.
HE HAD ALREADY SIGNED IN NJ. It already happened. It was done. Everyone already knew it before the draft and then was confirmed even more-so by the events that occurred at the draft. When they traded Marino away.
Grow up. |

the bold - your logic is flawed as you could only sign him to a 7 yr max deal if you sign a UFA
Ekblad would require a raise as he is coming off a 7.5M cap hit contract with no State tax. He would need 9.5M cap hit to make it work for him. |

The Hakanpaa drama really is something else. Not sure how this all plays out but it's an unfortunate swing and a miss if it turns out he's damaged goods. - mjones242
It would be a second swing and miss for Tre on D.
Klingberg last off season.
Fortunately, this one is cheaper |

Last time the Leafs won there were only 6 teams in the league.
How many teams play at the world cup? 32, set to go to 48 in 2026. And their competition is every 4 years. |
