According to yesterday’s article in the Athletic, the Rangers are the highest taxed team for players - almost 2% higher than Toronto and Ottawa.
- Atomic Wedgie

Yeah I saw that too. I’m willing to bet the NY Times has updated info or at least a source that has it. I just continue to use the google info on each province/state until I’m shown where they get their info. My general point was that taxation didn’t stop The Rangers from reaching the semifinals.

Except for fans of the 2 Original 6 teams that are Canadian teams that financially prop up the dog poop US teams like Arizona and in the past both Florida teams etc. etc etc.

There is no way the NHL just says "m'eh don't like it we don't GAS to Toronto or Montreal" & by proxy the fans of those teams.

It's not really an aggregate statistic. Similar to how Winnipeg has a a strong and dedicated following, they are very small in number - the US has many cities which fall into that category. The bulk of their numbers still fall into the Original 6 cities - Detroit, Boston, New York and Chicago. LA has been a huge revenue generator since Gretzky came along. I think Vegas generates a notable amount of revenue - and some relatively die-hard markets like Philly and Pittsburgh, Dallas and probably Washington.

Because I was curious, I just looked up the revenue stats on Forbes - there are more US fans, but proportionately both countries have a relatively similar number of franchises that could be doing better (Canada has 2 in Ottawa & Winnipeg and the US has 6 in Columbus, Arizona (Utah should do better), San Jose, Anaheim, Buffalo and Florida - they won the cup and had less revenue than Winnipeg).

Your point isn't lost, though - there are like 24 million people in the greater NY area alone.

- Monkeypunk

I agree with you, I don’t like that the US is an obvious focal point for the league, for growth in a far more wealthy and popular country, but I can see why.

It’s a business more than a sport, and the goal of a business is to make as much $ as possible, and that’s in the US.

It's cute that you think that is what I think, and also pretty ironic.

You need to stop being a direct jackass towards me and others routinely or I’ll ban you well into the season. You’ve officially gotten to the line you don’t want to cross.

Cheers.

That threat seems a bit over the top, I spoke to you the same way you speak to anyone who has a different opinion than you - it's always "cute" that they think that and it's the "end of story" when you state your opinion.

Funny how I'm the one singled out here for treating others poorly considering I agreed with another poster and simply said hearing the same opinion over and over was really annoying and was promptly scolded for it, right after a different poster avoided the swear filter for the umpteenth time (something you scolded me about last week) and that wasn't even mentioned.

If you think you can ban me for what I've said so be it, I'll follow up with the appropriate folks and we both know how it will likely play out.

Generally in life nobody gets to angrily exclude people who disagree with their opinion or call people out on being inconsistent or not practicing what they preach.

Have you ever thought of not moderating and just being a regular poster here? You may enjoy this place more if you did, I know others enjoy it more since I did (and some have told me privately they liked it more when I was moderating but that's besides the point).

Have a nice afternoon.

In Canada.

Only 40% of Canadians like hockey, so a whole 15.5 million people.

The states are roughly the same (Altho only 13% are known to be avid and not casual fans) and that works out to be about 133.3 million people. That’s 8.5x more than in Canada.

Canadians need to grasp that when it comes to the hockey business they mean very little to the league.

Okay and can you give me statistics of per capita? Your numbers are kind of skewed otherwise.

In addition, do you have dollar amounts of per capita spent? I'd venture that Canadians spend more than the average US fan. Especially considering to get into some arenas it's $8 with parking and hot dogs and in Canada it's $100 before all that.

EDIT: TO be fair to you, that data may not be available as it's fairly niche but I do think Canadians matter more than you think to the league. If they didn't why not just kick all the teams out and keep it US only, you'd save on hassle with flights and etc? Why are they trying to broaden their market to Europe? It's all about the $$$.

I don’t care about your opinion, you’ve become incredibly rude and I refuse to accept it. I even have the higher ups chatting with me regularly once again so try your little fight and if you win it I’ll just ban you again.

I’m sick of you and your attitude of late. I’ll simply start saving the direct links to your posts so anyone who questions my decision won’t disagree with me.

Take care.

Your over-valuing Canada and its roll like only Canadians do. If you think Bettman cares about Canadian teams beyond the attention they bring to the league world wide he doesn’t. Otherwise he’d adjust the cap to make up for the taxation differences.

It's hard to find specific data on this - I can tell you that Bedard was the most sold jersey last year, and the year before was Ovechkin, followed by Crosby and Matthews. In the playoffs it was Matthews. The most sold jersey in any given year was the year the Bruins was 65 games - two years ago. But in that same season, the top selling jerseys by team were Boston, NYR, Pittsburgh, Washington and Colorado. Some of the things here are based on bits of data I've seen, was able to find with a quick Google search or two, or just opinion on why I think some teams aren't selling as much:

Montreal is rebuilding, so while there is enthusiasm for the youth, there's no swell yet until they start to accomplish something with their new core. Toronto can't sustain any momentum. If they could win a couple of rounds and look good doing it, I think it would create that swell of momentum - but until then they just aren't the powerhouse we want them to be in terms of merchandise sales.

Now the Leafs are always in the top-3 of gate revenue because of the high ticket prices and high average attendance - but teams like Vegas, NYR and Montreal are in the mix as well. I'd say it was about a decade ago you'd see charts showing the Leafs doubling other arenas due to the sheer cost of going to a game, so as much as we female dog about it, the Leafs haven't been escalating their ticket prices as much as the other arenas. I believe I saw somewhere that it's actually more expensive to go to a Ranger game than a Leaf game now.

https://www.forbes.com/lists/nhl-valuations/

As of 2023, #1 in revenue is Toronto. Edmonton, LA, Montreal and New York, in that order round out the top 5 and 3 of them are Canadian.

Then it's, New Jersey, Boston, Vegas, Chicago and Philadelphia.

Canada brings in 1.498 billion dollars to the NHL. USA brings in 4.934 billion.

At the high end, Canada brings in a lot of money. But overall, it's still an American dominated revenue stream. America has well over 335 million people. 8 times the population of Canada and 3 times the revenue.

The "per capita" argument is moot here because Canada's biggest markets are basically all maxed out, aside from a 2nd team in the GTA and maybe Quebec City. The American markets are mostly tapped out in traditional areas but given their sheer size advantage will always have more potential to expand.

I liked Zito’s trade analogy.
It would be nice if the Leafs would trade one of there Maserati's for an SVU

Facts are not an opinion.

I’m sick of you and your attitude of late too so I guess we feel the same about each other’s attitude. You are rude, and condescending to many here quite frequently and then try to bully people because you threaten to ban them.

Rest assured I’ve got screen shots of your posts that are out of bounds and direct links too so I guess we are all good on that front.

Your confidence that you’ve done nothing wrong and it’s always others who are at fault is commendable despite being factually inaccurate.

I’m done with this back & forth it’s a waste of everyone’s time tbh. That being said if you feel the need to continue to speak disparagingly about me I’ll jump back in defend myself.

Cheers.
