I understand it. He's going to be the 5th highest paid player in the NHL this season. There are expectations that come with that pay rate. Ones he hasn't quite met consistently during his time here. Not saying he won't reach the elite level he's being paid for, but the reality is he wasn't close to being the 5th best player in the NHL last season.

He was clearly not playing his best hockey. To assess that it was because he lacks passion or compete level is ridiculous. He's a gamer and when he able to perform at his highest level, he's a game breaking player. I don't follow the Leafs (they suck and they are a disappointment even on the rare occasion when I hate the other team more), but so I can't comment on Marner, but Petey is clearly wants to win. He won the hardest shot competition last year! This year, he couldn't shoot hard at the All-Star Break and beyond. If/when he is healthy, he'll tilt the ice.
