Probably a mid round pick and/or swap for a cap dump. Maybe more if cap is retained.

Aside from one good season, why is everyone acting as if Necas is the next best thing since fire and sliced bread.

I would prefer the habs go get Laine than Necas

Ek is forgetting to ask WHEN! Right now Laine's value is extremely low because very few teams have the cap space for him. In the summer, he would have had more bidders. I could see going to a place like San Jose or Chicago for a warm body and mid-round pick.

Bigger question is, why didn't you just say toast instead of fire and sliced bread?

A team like OTT, who has a hard time attracting real talent, makes a lot of sense. Give CLB a $hitty dman like Docker and a 3rd or 4th round pick?

Well, he wouldn’t be a fit for my team, but if I was a playoff team looking to make that last Cup push, I’d consider giving a 1st for Laine at 33% retained salary and a 3rd round pick.

I figure the 1st would be at least 22nd overall if not later, but the CBJ needs those picks. I can afford a late 1st if the kid helps push me to a late run.

I get them out of that albatross of a deal and I only take on 5.74 for two years. Then I can cut ties or see if he fits. 5.74 isn’t too bad of a dice roll for just two seasons.

I’d also want a little more of a taste. Not much. A 3rd rounder would suffice. That’s there in case the whole thing blows up in my face. And it certainly could.

Laine is far from a playoff type player (true me I'm Leafs fan ans know the type when I see it) that do much to push a cup contender over the edge.

So.... he'll be going to the Leafs at the deadline then?

The only question that can really be asked is "What does Columbus consider artificially low asking price?"

First look at the player:
- He has scored 40+ goals before (ONCE) which was 7 YEARS ago.
- Has never proved to be consistent
- History of missing games

To be fair, other than the hype coming into the league and his sophomore year he has been average at best to complete dogpoop.

So he's overpaid for his production. Not a lot of value for that, but NOW you ALSO have his second team needing a fresh start AND leaving the players program for who knows....

The only thing I could see as "artificially low value" would be future considerations. Best case scenario is "Trouble for Trouble", "Risk for Risk", or "Salary Dump for Salary Dump". Laine doesn't even have that high of value without the new baggage, what the hell would Columbus expect?

Best return for Columbus is:
Whatever offer is made that allows them to clear some cap space for their return.

He's 26. Still in his prime. He's a risk, but to claim there is no chance he'll recover from his recent weak seasons is pessimistic. His health is the biggest obstacle.

Necas signed today. So I guess no RFA holdout from him. No trade either. As expected.
