I agree with everything here except the bolded. Leafs are a great regular scoring team but tighten up on the playoffs. Tre said it in his closing presser that they have to figure out a way to put more pucks in the net come playoffs. Having Laine as another option for scoring would be huge. Leafs seem to play solid team defense come playoffs. - bryant
Just to back up your point:
Leafs have the 5th best GA/GP in last year's playoffs.
Unfortunately, they had the 16th best GF/GP in last year's playoffs. |

Dammit, MonkeyPunk gotta come in here using facts to poop on my Laine dislike.
I didn't realize he was that big - the kid is a (frank)ing hulk if he wanted to be. Not that you want him to change into crash and banger, but he would be very hard to move off the puck if he was determined to shield it with his massive suit of meat armor.
I still think the cost would be too high to stomach comfortably, without some significant retention and that would drive the price even higher. Maybe persuade a third team to take some of that salary for a pick. |

1st!
That deal is junk. (I might consider Robertson for Laine at 50% and chuck him on the 3rd line. Might.)
Butt (frank) Laine.
We need a 3C and a 3LW and preferably ones that don't suck most of the time. A couple of proven playoff beasts! Yummy! - underhill14
The deal is heavily in the Leafs favour. There is no way Columbus would do it. It was written by a Leafs fan page or something. That's a trade the Leafs would and should make every single time. Unfortunately it's a fantasy |

The leafs already have next to no picks til 2027
DRAFT PICKS SUMMARY
1 2 3 4 5 6 7
2025
0 1 0 0 1 1 1
2026
1 0 1 0 1 0 0
2027
1 1 1 1 1 1 1
Moving picks is absolute lunacy for the leafs atm, especially for a guy who plays no different than the core four guys. They need more than just talent, they need one that comes with grit if any type at all.

You mean some bottom sixers, a couple questionable prospects and some late round pics isn’t enough for a star?
Nooooooo waaaaaaaay I can’t believe it. |

Do that deal? lol yes of course without even thinking about it. I don’t think his style is what the leafs need since he’d be more of a boost for what they already have but it would give the leafs more trade options when it comes to top end players.
That being said Columbus would be nuts to hold any of his salary unless they get so much as a return they’re the obvious winners. |

Just screwing around on the Googles, it appears Columbus doesn't really spend to the cap.
This year they have 13 forwards, 7 D, 2 goalies and about $10M in cap space.
Last year, it looks like they had about $7M left, with about $2.5M in retained cap.
The year before that, only $1M - but that was with about $15M in retained cap.
The year before that, $12M in cap space - with $2.65M retained for Max Domi.
So they have a history of retaining cap - I'm assuming to get draft picks and other assets.

I still wouldnt do it.
Leafs dont have many top picks over the next couple of years and Laine is simply not what we need.
I agree we need more scoring in the playoffs, but I dont see Laine as the answer to that. I just think he would turn into more of what we already have.
Im sure his reg season stats on the leafs would be great but if we are moving of our two 1st in the next 3 years, imo in needs to be for someone that brings what we lack.
And I dont see Cbus retaining any salary in that deal |

It would cost a fortune to get them to move that guy and retain over $4 million of his salary… not a bunch of bottom sixers, questionable prospects, and late in the round picks. As I said, if they get a good enough offer they’d consider it but what’s being mentioned here would do nothing more than get Waddell fired before a game even got played under him. |

they can use some PP scoring as well ..maybe he can help with that
also they give up a 1st but get a second...so they may move back 12 spots...who cares |

Although delayed, Leafs getting Laine is the same as Vancouver getting the Sedins.

What about in 2033 when we sign him for $1.6M on a one year deal? |

When a team trades for Laine
It murders some part of the world
These are the pale deaths which men miscall E5s
All this I cannot bear to witness any longer
I must go
