We are definitely in the dead zone of summer for hockey news.

I hope I am wrong, but it feels like this is the roster for opening night. I had hoped, in vain apparently, that something major could be worked out. As we inch closer to training camp, it is starting to look like we won't see a major core change until next deadline or offseason.

Gazing into the crystal ball of obvious possibilities, I see a misty vision of greatly increased cap space for next season. Whether that is the result of Tavares or Marner, remains to be seen.

Woll, Stolarz, and Murray is a little scary if Woll crashes and burns or ends up hurt off and on, like a Leafy Ben Bishop. Stolarz is a career backup, so you don't want him as your starter. Murray is a total reclamation case and could go wildly either way. There's little certainty here.

I like Tanev and what he brings. But, like Woll, he also scares me a little. He will be a vital piece in shoring up the defense, but he's also in his mid-thirties and plays a hard game. If he ends up taking an early ticket to Robidas Island, then it's right back to where it was.

Bert was a spaz, but his 20 goals have not been replaced.

Reaves is still on the roster.

Regardless, count me in. I'm ready to play the long game if necessary.

All well and good, but they said big changes were coming, but Marner is still here. Until the core 4 is broken up, it's status quo.

With a hard salary cap that continues to go up, maybe it's time to think about being the first North American major league to abolish the draft, ELC and RFA system.

It destroys any and all incentive for any team to ever tank but allows teams to restock their system with careful finite financial decisions rather than luck of the draw.

Allow all players to sign with any team they choose at 18 years old. Maybe restrict the maximum first contract length to 5 years for players under 23 but they become UFAs immediately.

- Rare_Jewel

I have no problem with the draft, other than it has too many rounds. The draft and the ELC system helps prevent the league from becoming too imbalanced competitively.

Maybe have a 5 round draft, followed by 5 years of ELC, leading directly to UFA. That way, teams would have cost certainty for the first 5 years on every player they draft, and in return the players could become UFA's as early as 23 years of age.

Abolishing an RFA system that nobody seems to like would be an added side benefit.

Caesars are our primary reason for having it around.

A funny thing about this is it’s my gf’s fav drink, and I’m an epileptic who seizes fairly often, she has mistakenly tried to order seizures a couple times at a restaurant, the look on the server’s face is always awesome lol

Berube does give me some hope, more so than any of the other moves made so far.

If anyone can mold this roster into something different, it would be someone like him.

Anyone who complains about ice time has to wrestle him on the locker room floor.

Berube should be an improvement but if you look at his coaching career, it's rather bad overall. Only 6 full seasons as a head coach.

About half the time, his teams don't make the playoffs or exit in the 1st round.

He did win a Cup, and that's not a fluke however, if you look at the tools he had on that team and the tools the he has on this team and it's almost the complete opposite.

I could see Berube getting this team playing a system that scores less but plays better "playoff" hockey which could lead to getting out of the 1st round more often but until I see the Leafs put together a blueline that consists of equivalents to Pietrangelo, Bouwmeester and Parayko with a prime Binnington in net, I don't see Berube being the guy to win the Cup with this team as it's currently constructed.

Quenneville was the right guy for this job. The Leafs just don't want the best people for the job. The results will probably show that in the end.

that's a can of worms all to itself. I do wonder how it would play out with him coaching the Leafs. No need for that now.
There are strong feelings from people on the subject of coach Q ever coaching again.
