Friedman reporting the Oilers will NOT match the Holloway and Broberg offer sheets. Official announcement around 8:30 a.m. Central.

That was my prediction, especially when Hollaway was 2x, and Broberg was 4x predicted salary by AFP analytics.

Let alone Holloway was scheduled in as 4c, and Broberg as 3rd pairing defenseman this year.

That doesn't sound right. I was told all day yesterday (not only on this board) that these moves were made so they could match on Broberg.

Not by me, if they valued signing Draisaitl, they could never afford Hollaway and Broberg.

With the moves they made, they will be cap compliant on day 1 with Kane on IR. On day 2 they move Kane to LTIR, and start accruing cap space in order to make a trade deadline move.

It's just funny how sure so many people are that they are right. Until the opposite happens.

Can't be, I've read that Stan doesn't know crap about cap management.

Maybe Hall stays healthy and returns to Edmonton at the TDL. Maybe they'll want Murph (even as an LTIR if he can't play). If Kane can return, though, they need to save space for him.

Looks like it's officially official now. That will be in interesting team to watch for the next two years.

They have a thin roster after the top four guys.
They just lost their top two young/developing players.
They have Bouchard, McDavid and Draisaitl to resign to higher contracts than they have now.

I know the cap is supposed to go up, but I'm not sure if it will be enough to fit all those guys as well as build around them. That Jack Campbell buyout isn't doing them any favors either.

He knows plenty about cap management, but apparently little about being competitive under those conditions.

I'm obviously overstating a bit as he was hired after Jackson signed all these other players and left these two exposed for an offer sheet. Like I said, the next two years are going to be interesting to watch them.

In a separate deal Blues send a 2028 3rd round pick and prospect Paul Fischer (LD, 2023 5th round pick) to the Oil for future considerations. Some sort of thank you for not matching the offer sheets or a make nice move by the Blues?

They basically agreed to give Edmonton assets to not match the deal on one or more of the players. Meanwhile Bowman decided to save cap space for his big guns that will need new contracts.

To be fair, that speculation that they made room to potentially match the offers was all over the hockey world. Also seems likely they were going to match at least one offer until STL gave them more assets. I mean it's no coincidence that the Blue just traded them a prospect and another 3rd round pick for nothing. The Blues get a bottom 6 forward with some skill and a future 2nd pair D who is pretty much ready to go.

Next year, with a projected 4M cap increase, they'll have about 28M in cap space with 15 players signed. Figure 20M-22M goes to Drai and Bouchard. 6-8M for 5 or 6 players is doable, likely a couple of the openings go to cup chasing vets like Perry on 1M contracts.

Don't know beyond next year when McD is due a raise, but they have at least a 2 year window.

Would you please stop ruining my overreaction.

All of what you said is pretty much true (although I saw just as many say they made the moves to replace the players they planned to lose). Regardless, my popcorn is ready.

Another reason why I’m not a GM. Earlier this year I suggested giving the Oilers the first from Toronto plus Phillips for Holloway, and the Blues get him for a third. By the way, a poster or two said that wasn’t enough, go figure.

I think even us who watched Stan for years never really know what he is going to do. Good or bad, he seems to always have extra steps or unexpected moves.

I'm not saying they are completely screwed, but they have almost no young prospects coming up to fill spots, and very little to trade (players or picks). RNH, Nurse and Hyman locked in until they are 35. This looks a lot like the Hawks post 2015 without the cups.

I thought maybe they would keep Holloway. Broberg not so much. Easier for Bowman to make this decision since it's not his guys. Although now I'm worried about Broberg being a good defenseman since Bowman doesn't think he will be. Then again paying a kid that much for not really putting any kind of body of work up is a bit desperate.

Then there is this trade

Almost like an apology trade

The good news is that if they are with the Hawks it likely means that they've outplayed not only their peers in RFD, but shown enough that they'd be better than some of the NHL roster players.

...or that the Hawks were hammered by injuries again.

- Chunk

Yep, you have to earn promotions going forward, as there’s more NHL talent on the current roster than the last few years. If Korchinski stays up, and I believe that he will, the Hawks will need another defensive prospect up as well. I’m thinking one of EDM, Kaiser, or Phillips will make the team, and Phillips is out of options so he can be claimed if waived.

They are going all in on the first one, then try and figure it out. The Panthers went all in last year and won the cup, obviously makes all the Cap casualties a lot less painful this year than if they would of come up short again.

IMO Korchinski spends most if not all the year in the A playing with Levshunov. Kaiser will start with Murphy (until Murphy is hurt). He earned it after his recall. Phillips will be #7.

Same thing with Nazer. He will start in Rockford. Better to start hem in the Rock. and hopefully play well, then start with the big squad, struggle then get sent down like Kaiser and Reichel did last year.

If I'm laying money on any one player to make a move to stick with the Hawks this year, it's Kaiser (ok maybe Nazar too, but I think they will take the long road with him). I think you could see him start to get it when he was called back up and he acquitted himself pretty well in the AHL too. Give him a slightly competent partner and I think he takes off.

I bet they are trying, but IMO they've stalled out this off-season. They brought in Arvidsson, Podkolzin and Skinner to replace Foegele, McCloud, and Holloway.

They've also replaced Ceci and Broberg with Emberson and Josh Brown. Personally, I'm looking at that and saying "net loss".

I think they are not done. Tyson Barrie and Justin Schultz are still out there as a RD. Either one signed to a league minimum contract takes the place of Ceci IMO.

Could be. I was talking to a friend on Sunday (I've got three in case anyone had a wager going) and said that I think this will be one of the most interesting hockey seasons to watch in a long time. You've got the Marner situation in TOR and whether their changes will improve the results. The Oilers doing all they can to finally get to the top (not to mention all of their upcoming contracts to sort out), Nashville going all in, and close to home - the Hawks hopefully starting their ascent back to relevance.

Add in the Laine move to MTL, and all the turnover in CAR and there are tons of fun storylines this year.
