As Chunk posted, these were cap dump trades. He has not made any trade to acquire a core piece. Every trade was made to weaken the team in the short term, in order to draft higher/acquire more picks for the future.

In that respect KD has done what he set out to do, so he "won these trades", hopefully in a few year's that is still the case.

- LAHawk

Two of them were cap dump trades. Lafferty was buried in the PIT system and making minimum.

I wouldn't say any of these three trades weakened the team, though.

Holloway (2x $2,290,457) and Broberg (2 x$4,580,917)

I would resign Hollaway and let Broberg walk

Compensation is 3rd rounder for Hollaway, second rounder for Broberg.

- LAHawk

I’ve made it known in the past that I’m a Holloway fan. I’d love for KD to trade for him. Stan matches both and trades Holloway to the Hawks for a 2nd and a prospect, beats the 3rd round pick from the offer sheet.
Edit - Is that within the rules? Can a team match an offer sheet and then trade the player?

I believe a team that matches an offer sheet can't trade that player for a year. That prevents what what you describe above about a team getting more trade value back than the offer sheet compensation.

These specific ones didn't weaken the team, but they didn't really move the needle forward either.

Lafferty was a mild improvement, but not earth-shattering by any means.

Richardinson was struggling and has mostly been a 20 point player aside from being given PP and top six time with the Hawks. KD then signed him for about a mil more than he would have gotten on the open market.

Hall and Foligno should have helped the team in theory, but Hall got hurt. Foligno is a really good leader and has chipped in, but he's best suited for a 4th line role.

I'm not really trying to take anything away from KD. He's done what's been needed to reset the team. I'm just saying that he's not had to really negotiate a high end trade for a really strong player, or negotiate a difficult contract yet. He's gotten high draft picks for players that other teams had wanted, and over-signed a number of FA's to be placeholders.

The Lafferty trade was a good change of scenery trade. He was eventually packaged with McCabe for the first rounder.

They knew the risk on Hall. Foligno has been what they hoped, a leader. Not a top six guy on a contending team, sure, but for their purposes, hard not to like the acquisition.

Perry obviously was a swing and miss, but I'm not sure KD signs him if not for LR's recommendation.

Beauvillier was a swing and miss, but I think it's possible that KD knew worst case he could unload him to Trotz at the TDL when the Preds would have more cap space. Ultimately all that cost was the better position in the 5th.

One also has to remember that as a rebuilding team, there will be a number of players who have the Hawks on their NTC lists, and we'll never know it.

Free agency signings, we can argue about whether or not it was prudent to sign AA again, and Donato hasn't moved the needle, either.

I would think that KFC is not in the position to make a major trade until he sees what the fruits of his labor brings. A major trade would be a waste at this point. I think it will probably be three more years before he needs to solidify his young core. Call it the Hossa effect.

Thanks boiler. If the Blues get Holloway for a 3rd, that’s a steal.

IMO StanBo will package Kane and a another asset (they do not have a first or second next year so maybe Shane LaChance?) to a team with cap space available for nothing. Alternatively, Kane might need hip surgery and start the season on LTIR. Still would need to dump some salary though, or have less than a 23 man roster.

If you are going to offer sheet anyone i would have tried to sign Bouchard last year.

That Vlasic deal is looking better and better now.

An okay playoffs gets you $4.5 per x2.

- BetweenTheDots

Do you mean Bouchard or Broberg?

Broberg seemed to help settle Nurse down and played well I thought in the finals. Looked like he belonged.

Decent upside. He's very tall and has a pretty solid frame at 212. Put up pretty good numbers in the AHL I guess. Moves very very well.

From the STL perspective - 4.5 million and a second for what could end up being a solid top 4 guy on the blue line is a no brainer deal I think.

Best case scenario they get a really good piece. Worst case scenario they get a pretty decent albeit flawed piece for the price range regarding a big athletic pass first toolsy kinda guy.

Its win win for STL. Could be back breaking for the Oilers if they end up with two guys who under achieve significantly. If Broberg doesn't end up being a big play driver and is more like a Vlasic then it buries an awful lot of money on their second and third pairings.

Small sample to be sure. But trades like:

Lafferty for Nylander
D!ckinson and #2 for Stillman
Hall and Foligno for Mitchell and Regula

are a good start.

Can't judge Kyle until we know what Korchinski, Arty, Nazar, Moore and some of the other draft picks are. As well as seeing how he manages the cap with the younger players who start to prove themselves and veterans.

A bit easier to deal from a spot where they won't be held immediately accountable for on ice results and there are no cap restrictions one way or another.

Tearing it down and throwing darts was the easy part.

Oilers fans speculating Ceci, along with a sweetener, may be on the way out, freeing up 3.25M in cap space.

First just returned from visiting my father in Venice, Fl. Think someone on the board recommended JoeyD’s for dogs and Chicago beef. Ugggh food was nasty. Beef was watery, dogs (not Vienna beef) were left in the water too long, buns were hard. Never again.

Re: Laine

CBJ would need to retain and/or take back salary for this to work salary wise.

Before even thinking about this would want TT to reach out to talk to Laine to find out how he is doing (seeing as the team cannot talk to him directly). If his head is on straight could work.

Be willing to give up AA + 3rd for Laine 25% retained ($6.525 cap hit) $2.2 mil salary difference (might be a bit of an overpay depending on the market. If indications Laine is ok, think there will be a few teams looking).

Do not think there is a chance this happens or that the hawks are even contemplating this move, but interesting thought exercise.

- Revco38

I live very close to Venice, but not a fan of JoeyD’s. Chicago Tony’s Beef has a decent beef sandwich and they’re also in Venice.

The new team can put him on LTIR too. How else was Seabrook's, Hossa's etc. contract get traded, they couldn't pass a physical either.

Different situation. The Blues made a strategic move to get Broberg by offering him a number that they know the Oilers can't really match. The Blues have room under the cap for the next two years without any main pieces needing notably bigger money. If they get either one, they get a two year try-out period to make sure they are worthy of good money, and they can sign them for longer.

Krug possibly out for the year (maybe for his career), and Broberg theoretically offers more offense than Vlasic... It really is a solid business move.

I think as we move along here, the strength of the scouting departments is going to be the absolute key to teams becoming and remaining strong competitors. Identifying players that will become major contributors early on and signing them to reasonable deals is pretty much the only way to remain a strong team. The Hawks may have a bit of a buffer initially with the sheer volume of prospects they have, but they ultimately will likely fall into the same predicament once they start winning.

I guess because as of now Vlasic has completely outplayed him with AHL forwards. I didn't watch Broberg that closely but it's not like I kept saying to myself who is that defenseman in the playoffs. I guess if you want to pay a 3rd pairing dman all that money, he's going to St Louis.

Personally i think it's bad business handing out offer sheets.

Broberg should be a good #3 dman in the near future, he has the skill and upside. He was very good in his limited time in the post season, but the price STL offered him here is a bit premature. This year with the Oilers he was likely going to be second pair.

I tell you Vlasics defense is so underrated, we have at worst a shut down stud defenseman who plays 21 minutes a night, who has a good outlet pass, if these grew in trees we would of drafted a bunch of them already

I guess 10 playoff games is all he needed to show the Blues. Yikes. Good for Broberg but it will be interesting how he develops in St. Louis.

Why is Vlasic the comp? They are different types of D-men. Vlasic was given an opportunity to play 82 games and Broberg was held back as the Oilers were cup hunting (and he did quite well in the playoffs).
