He was the best defenseman on the team. The coaches didn't have much of choice but to play him. The real failure to me was not getting a good veteran to play with him. Fletcher had the right idea with Niskanen and Ellis, but we know how they worked out.
- Dkos

Yup, when he got a stable partner he was good. Being the number 1 on a bad team with no adequate partner is a mix for disaster for any not true #1 Dman.

It was funny in that they were completely serious. Incompetence at it's highest level. Andrae is so good, that he won't make the team this upcoming season.

The optimist could say you got a pick for a player you weren’t taking. Time will tell if that pick brings value.

Play, yes but he shouldn't have been playing 22 minutes a game on the top pairing. He should've been protected.

I'd rather have the better rated player at a big position of need.

I know you will change your mind. When you don't have any knowledge or conviction, when you don't take a position and are easily manipulated by outside sources or can't even remember from day to day what you post due to that lack of conviction and knowledge. It's a guarantee that you will change your mind.

There is tons of evidence of how easily you are fooled by trades and claim the team is on the path to the cup. There is no doubt in my mind that you will change.

It would be so easy for you to make the criticism go away. Learn something! Anything!

Why do you care so much?

I feel like you’ve been manipulated by this team because, although it’s pure outrage, you’re still discussing this team on a message board every day. Sometimes I think this is your only actual human interaction - hence the self-importance of being a “regular” at a message board.

You’re like the guy who is always at the bar who is way too into being “that guy who is always at the bar”

Meh, he saw success with Niskanen so I dont think it was a development issue. At the end of the day your top pair Dmen typically just burst into the NHL and dominate. Not much development involved. Ive also noticed a trend that most top 6 fwds or top 4 D usually play no more than two full seasons in the AHL.

I really think it was just he wasnt happy here.

The issue is that he never improved as a player. He was good at the start and then never fixed any of his bad habits or improved on any of his weaknesses. He was basically the same player in Year 7 as he was in Year 1.

I have one of these types at my local bar. His name is Richard. He has a spot at the end of the bar with his name on it and he thinks his opinion matters

The weight of having to carry the team and the losing took its toll. The fan base always overrated his early impact. Talk of future Norris trophies.

Provorov was likely a failure in development. Making him a 1st pair defenseman once he entered the league paired with MacDonald was not a smart choice. Maybe he still doesn’t become a stud but he might have not developed the ego problem with better vets and a slower progression up the lineup.
- psuhockey

I think Ivan Provorov was every bit the player the Flyers needed him to be his first 5 seasons in the league. It’s his last 3 season (one with Columbus now) that shows cause for concern. Provorov is still only 27 years old and still has time to turn things around. It’s hard to believe that he’s only really ever had one solid partner in Matt Niskanen. I don’t know who he was a partnered with in Columbus but they’re an overall team. Andrew MacDonald, Shayne Gostisbehere and Justin Braun were never going to be the answer. Too bad Torts realized Sanheim could be something special on the right side way too late.

Provorov's strength as a player was offensively at 5 on 5. Attacking on the rush and filling in holes coming late. They tried to make him a shut down defenseman and a PP defenseman. Neither of which he was suited for. He had to be the teams top defenseman since he was 19. That's an issue that is caused by the Flyers complete lack of ability to develop defenseman over time.

You’ve never played the sport. So your opinion on these matters mean nothing. You attempting to “talk hockey” siting buzzwords and phrases you parroted from YouTube videos is hysterical. It’s the only way you can feel involved in the sport of hockey. 😆

Nope. I had to look up the reference you were making…because I’m young. This isn’t the case for you.

I don't really buy that.

To me it was Flyers management who overrated him not the fan base. They hyped the heck out of him. He never seemed like a fan favorite to me...at least not until he refused to wear a rainbow jersey

I had to Google it too (and I'm old). It's from the Police Academy movies.

I’ve seen all of the Police Academy movies, even the crappy one is Russia, but all before my teens. Small details like the name of a gay bar is gonna fall short with me. Remembering this detail seems overly important to him.

Edit

Well at that, already denying he brought up gay bars. That’s interesting.

The comments on here in his first few seasons, were regularly about him being a future Norris winner. Provorov became so frustrated here that a change of scenery was a necessity.
