JT scored the OT winner vs Tbay for the only Leafs second appearance on how long? And also since you mention playoff maths….

The 3 core Leafs playoff careers in G5-7:

Matthews - 19 gp, 416.87 mins of TOI, 8 goals, 13 pts, 1.15 G/60, 1.87 pts/60

Nylander - 21 gp, 398.49 mins of TOI, 7 goals, 17 pts, 1.05 G/60, 2.56 pts/60

Marner - 21 gp, 465.70 mins of TOI, 1 goal, 9 pts, 0.13 G/60, 1.16 pts/60

Let Marner walk. Bye.

I heard Tavares is gonna play like he's 25 until he's 45. And do it for free.

from last blog.. reply to wedgie

re Tavares

his scoring regression last season is more PP time

his 5v5 has been consistent the last 4 seasons

29
30
39
37 (2023-24)

which is pretty much consistent through his whole career. except his 1 outlier season (first with leafs)

im not as worried about him as much as most seem to be. he is actually aging well imo

I think it’s more of a visual thing for me than a stat thing. Sure he may be producing at a decent level but he’s also playing in a top 6 with Matthews, nylander and Marner. All good scorers and playmakers. If he’s playing with the islanders he’s probably down 20 points a year especially because of the way the islanders play. JT isn’t getting any quicker and I honestly still stand by my 4x4 max. If he doesn’t want to take that then you let him walk. You can’t just give him and extra few million a year just for fun.

to get him to 4, you may have to go 6 years. pushing him to 40

im fine with that. id prefer he finish a Leaf. the back side wont matter..the leafs window will be closing. cap will be up...4 mill will be nothing for a rebuilt/retool

Is that regular season math or playoff math?

I'd do the playoff math but then you'd edit my post and threaten to ban me.

- Rare_Jewel

That’s both.

Bennett:
Regular season: 0.598PPG pace
Playoffs: 0.744PPG pace

Cup winner? Yes. A step up in the playoffs? Yes. A PPG pace? Not even close.

Average in the league for the 2nd line C is about 50P.

Coyle in Boston: 60P in the season / 5P in 13 playoff games
Tavares in Toronto: 65P in the season / 2P in 7 playoff games
Stamkos in TB: 82P in the season / 6P in 5 playoff games
Compher in Detroit: 48P in the season
Cozens in Buffalo: 47P in the season
Norris in Ottawa: 30P (49P pace) in the season
Newhook in Montreal: 34P (51P pace) in the season

Other than Stamkos (and maybe even Coyle) JT is still notably outperforming the other 2nd line C’s in that division.

Gotta respect how some people don't let little things like facts get in the way of their proven horrible opinions.
- GreatGigInTheSky

they may be horrible by a country mile but there his opinions/not facts like we have ours.

6 is to long for me. It doesn’t bother me if he retires a leaf or not. At the end of the day all that matters is the leafs winning the cup. If they have to hurt some feelings along the way so be it.

This is like what came first, the chicken or the egg?

you can't do playoff math unless you get past the regular season .
if you can't get past the regular season , then playoff math is moot.

*can't wait for the core 4 to be gone so we have something fun to argue about for 10 billion years*

Here's hoping this will motivate JT and the team because I think* that a trade is not happening. This is a culture move like what they did in SJ and we'll see how it goes. Not sure Matthews will hit 70, it's very unlikely, but if there was a year to bet on it, it's this one.

Yes I'm here, only lurking for obvious reasons.

As far as confirmation, I play beer league and am over 50 and play like I'm 70 if that helps?

Or in other words, ain't no 40 year old playing like they are 25 in a beer league, however there are MANY MANY beer leaguers who think they can play like a 25 year old. I had one try to do a 'Michigan' on me this winter, I nearly fell onto the ice I was laughing so hard at how poorly he failed at it AND the fact my D man absolutely rocked him for trying it AND he got chirped mercilessly for the rest of the game for it by me, my team and his own team AND both refs.

"Can I get an autograph after the game Zegras?"
"Which meeting do you have lined up with scouts after the game bud?"

It went on and on and on..........his team were chirping him the hardest actually!

*thanks for the confirmation.

if the ref were chirping him, hope it was up to Shoresy's standard chirp.

Ref chirp: like did you give your balls a tug before the game and thought it was a good idea to try "The Michigan"

The 3 core Leafs playoff careers in G5-7:

Matthews - 19 gp, 416.87 mins of TOI, 8 goals, 13 pts, 1.15 G/60, 1.87 pts/60

Nylander - 21 gp, 398.49 mins of TOI, 7 goals, 17 pts, 1.05 G/60, 2.56 pts/60

Marner - 21 gp, 465.70 mins of TOI, 1 goal, 9 pts, 0.13 G/60, 1.16 pts/60

Let Marner walk. Bye.

- Big23Questions

It's Tavares' only GWG in the playoffs with the Leafs. Marner has 3. In Series clinching games (games which can eliminate either opponent), Marner has 2 GWG. Nylander also has 3 GWG, 1 of which was in a clinching game.

Captain Matthews has 6 GWG, but only 1 in a Series clinching game.

Once again . . . the "yeah but how many game 7 points does he have?" is a silly argument, since without wins earlier in the series there is no game 7 to choke in. It is also a team game in general, so here's some stuff to note - but I will concede that Marner is not making a difference when a difference needs to be made. Some other things to consider:

Matthews has played in 5 game 7s, has no goals and 3 assists.
Tavares has played in 3 game 7s and has 1 goal and no assists.
Marner has played in 5 game 7s and has no goals and 2 assists.
Nylander has played in 5 game 7s and has 2 goals and 2 assists.

But I mean McDavid has played in 4 game 7s and has 1 goal and 1 assist. I probably wouldn't oust him.

Overall the Toronto Maple Leafs as a team have not gotten it done when it matters. Marner isn't the stick that stirs the drink, but he's a contributor. They are all being paid to be difference makers and none of them are making that difference.

Marner gets singled out by Leaf fans - and one thing they pointed out was his two passes to Edmundson in the slot in the playoffs - but the question shouldn't be why Marner was passing to him, it should be why he was the only goddamned Leaf willing to be in the slot when it mattered - and that was on a line with Tavares and Nylander.

One last bit of food for thought in general that gives some context, too:

Tavares is 16-22 in the playoffs (with Toronto) and has 9G-6A in wins (-13), and 3G-6A in losses.

Marner is 24-33 in the playoffs and has 7G-23A in wins and 4G-16A (-11) in losses.

Nylander is 23-31 in the playoffs and has 12G-11A in wins and 8G-12A (-10) in losses.

Matthews is 22-33 in the playoffs and has 15G-13A in wins and 8G-12A (-12) in losses.

For the same context - McDavid is 37-37 in the playoffs and has an astounding 19G-53A in wins and 18G-27A (-21) in losses.

The Oilers, in my opinion, have built everything around McDavid - so if you shut him down, you probably win - but the Leafs have paid through the nose to ensure that they are rolling out a top-6 that should be better than most top-3s - and they simply aren't.

Due to his age and ability I would 100% be keeping Marner *if* his next contract stays in the same realm as Nylander and even then both contracts are hard to digest - and Tavares would be based on whether he expects his next contract to exceed $5m and what term he's thinking - although I will concede that is my feeling based on what I expect from him this season (continued relatively slow decline - around 25 goals and 60 points seems fair - he's only 34).

Another long overdue move by the Leafs. Fast and progressive, not two descriptives for the Leafs.
